why are fart jokes such a bad thing in Star Wars while they are perfectly acceptable in that other trilogy.

Degraded? Haha...

Thanks for the update Cygnet, but again, that is little more than speculation in my opinion. Either way, midi-chlorians does not a series break. However, I do hate them.

As for your reply about Lucas, you addressed 'successful movies' but brushed aside my other two assertions. Please address them?

sure... again, i am referring solely to Lucas as director... i don't see anything innovative about his methods. someone like mike leigh is an innovator for the directorial techniques he uses with actors and for building a story around their characters, but someone like Lucas is fairly conventional in his approach to "covering the action", don't you think? shooting against a green screen has little to nothing to do with one's talent for the cinematic form. and recognized the world over? what does celebrity have to do with a director's ability to unify form and content? to encourage an actor to "go deeper"? to make a picture greater than the sum of its parts?

Wow, some people really hate Star Wars.

You know, I never really figured out the virtue in hating something. I mean we all come across things that we don't like but why bother endlessly pontificate upon it? I've seen a lot of bad movies over the years, but to be honest, the moment I walk out of the theater it's over. The Razzie awards are fun, but none of them are any surprises. We don't cheer when we see Showgirls sweep the Razzies, but we do cheer when we see a movie that we do like get the recognition it deserves, or better yet, jeer seeing a movie that deserves more get the shaft (i.e. Sideways).

I hate Star Wars because it almost made me forget that Natalie Portman was actually a decent actress for a few years. Thankfully she's out of that stage in her career.

Spoiler:
In the bedroom of Padme's Coruscant Apartment, Anakin and Padme share a tender moment, embracing and sharing a kiss.

Padme takes Anakin's flesh hand and presses it against her belly.

PADME
He keeps kicking

ANAKIN
He? I thought you'd ordered your medical droid not to spoil the surprise.

PADME
Oh, I didn't get this from Emdee. It's my... motherly intuition.

Anakin feels another kick and laughs.

ANAKIN
Motherly intuition, huh? With a kick that hard? Definitely a girl.

Of course, some might argue that "Showgirls sweep(ing) the Razzies" is "a movie (getting) the recognition it deserves".

i don't hate anybody or anything. from my perspective, i'm interested in deconstructing poor filmmaking and storytelling because understanding the mistakes of bad cinema helps reveal the virtues of its antithesis.

Personally, I see nothing groan inducing about that scene. Of course it will come down to how they do. Spoilerrific says they actually perform quite well in that scene.

to make a picture greater than the sum of its parts?
How many times do I have to say it. THX-1138, American Graffiti, and Star Wars are all greater than the sum of their parts. They're all generally recognized and very good to great films. Just the sheer vision to bring Star Wars to life despite one disaster after the other, shows his ability. Did you not see the Empire of Dreams documentary? Just the fact he was able to survive that and get the picture done, let alone created a Best Picture caliber film, is nothing short of astonishing. Yet you keep ignoring that fact and only point to his faults. As I said before, if Lucas had never directed a good film, you might have a point about him being a hack.

shooting against a green screen has little to nothing to do with one's talent for the cinematic form.
That's quite the statement. Shooting against a bluescreen is something that has to be done when making a film like Star Wars. That certainly doesn't detract from his talents. I'll point you once again in the direction of THX-1138 and American Graffiti, two films that have little to no bluescreen.

Hell, star wars influenced an entire generation of filmmakers and non-filmmakers alike.
Who created and directed Star Wars? That's what I thought. Also, you may want to watch the featurettes as well as do some searches for interviews. Lucas has influenced many filmmakers, good and bad alike. To suggest they were inlfuenced by his work, but not by him, is silly.

however, if you were to ask those same three filmmakers to name the directors that they admire, you'd get different answers.
Dude, you didn't ask to name filmmakers that admired Lucas. You asked to name one good filmmaker that was inspired by him. Though I do think it's crazy to think that there aren't good filmmakers who admire Lucas. Hell, there are many that are downright jealous of Lucas' power, wealth, and independence. Many admire him for that alone, and for what he's done for the industry.

But what you asked was to name one good filmmaker that Lucas influenced.

Here are just a few of Cameron's quotes from the very article you mentioned.

"I was living in a Star Wars world in my mind, and all of a sudden I saw this film, and it was like somebody had reached into my hind brain and yanked out a lot of stuff that was in there, and I was seeing it on the screen realized."

"That was probably the film that galvanized me to get off my butt and go be a film maker."

If that's not influencing someone, I don't know what is. It was Lucas' work that influenced him to even be a filmmaker. I could go get quotes from Jackson, Scott, and Spielberg. But you get the point.

Oh, I don't hate Yub-Yub, but I didn't care for it.

you avoided the key point i made. Star Wars, the movie was influential, but Lucas as a director has not influnced anyone of note. can you think of anyone that has been accused of stealing Lucas' style? I can't.

Actually, I don't hate SW at all. But I figured any...gasp!...criticism...gasp! would get me into trouble in the other thread.

I had a Buddy of mine who's a total SW Fan. Anyway, when Lord of The Rings was all hot and heavy he said that he was jealous of all the high praise for Peter Jackson's filmmaking and handling of the story. He said that he wished people would praise the Star Wars movies in the same manner but he knew it would probably never happen.

So you don't that that the influence that Star Wars has has anything to do with Lucas creating/directing it?

No he's saying the directorial style in the movies hasn't influenced anyone, not that Lucas or the movies themselves haven't influenced anyone period.

Leave it for the haters, who will hopefully stay out of the other threads for now (much more likely since the main troll was banned).

no, quite the contrary! some of the scenes between anakin and padme in AOTC were painful to watch. their romanctic exchanges are entirely forced, unaided by the generic, uninspired lines they were given. imo, this exchange from ROTS looks like more of the same stilted dialogue. so yes Kal-El, THIS star wars couple DOES act like this... unfortunately. (in contrast, han and leia in TESB were much more natural, and believable)

Well, neither of us have seen said scene so I think it's quite premature to judge it, regardless of how bad their acting was in Clones.

And with that said, I shall now make my exit to this thread.

Don't give Leia too much credit . . . nothing beats the worst line (both in terms of writing and delivery) of all times, which happens to be found in Return Of The Jedi:

Leia: Luke don't talk that way. You have a power I don't understand, and could never have.

Luke: You have that power, too. In time, you'll learn to use it as I have. The Force is strong in my family. My father had it, I have it...and my sister has it. Yes, it's you, Leia.

Leia: I know. Somehow, I've always known.

oh, that whole scene is the low point of the entire saga! what about...

Han: Could you tell Luke, is that who you could tell?
Leia: I... (turns away from him)

I'd love to know who was responsible for this particular scene... Lucas or Marquand.

Yeah . . . it's horrible.

Honestly, it is this scene that always give me a chuckle when people complain about the dialog and acting in Ep. 1 & 2. There is nothing in either of those films that comes anywhere near to approaching the horror that is that scene.

another problem I had with AOTC was the casting of the Jedi in the arena rescue. 200 hundred Jedi should have a more commanding presence than a bunch of star trek red shirts. it actually has me looking forward to their slaughter.
