There are uncut, original language versions available (I recommend the R2/PAL UK release), and there is no reason to give Lion's Gate any of your movie for a watered-down, dubbed (ugh!) version.

Lion's Gate is clearly confused as to who comprises its audience. I happen to like the movies it chooses for distribution, but these are, generally speaking, wonky genre films and difficult art films. In other words, not mainstream stuff. And the grindhouse/arthouse audience doesn't limit themselves to region one DVDs or the usual dreck in the theaters, and so we won't be willing to "make do" with a substandard presentation. Simply put, we know better than to wait for North American distribution on films like this. Too often, distribution either never happens or happens only in bastardized, watered-down, dubbed and otherwise Joe-Sixpacked into submission forms.

So, Lion's Gate, you've alienated your core audience. Good luck with the Blockbuster crowd.

It seems that most if not all the Film Festival showing of this was the complete NC-17 rated cut of the film: Philadelphia/Maryland/Toronto (in 2003).

I think you meant to say

"and there is no reason to give Lion's Gate any of your MONEY for a watered-down, dubbed (ugh!) version."

I can agree with you. Lions Gate should pay dearly for this.

Since I am abit worried about buying a PAL/R2 dvd since I have never tried my families cyberhome player yet.

I'm looking at this NTSC R0 release, since I'd be able to watch it on any player I want at least.

http://cweb2.millenianet.com/cgi-bin...aute%20tension

But this notice here confuses me....how the hell can you access 'titles' on a dvd? I've heard of them, but could never find that option anywhere when playing around with the remote and dvd menus.

THE DVD HAS A HIDDEN UNCUT VERSION OF THE FILM. The disc defaults to the cut version and in order to change it, you need to play the film and from your remote control change the title from 3 to 2. It may take some figuring out and unfortunately, we cannot help people with their individual players. We have found that the easy way is to use the "jump to a time" function which should display the TITLE as 3 and allow you to change that manually to 2

On the ironic side..LG is releasing two uncut dvds durring the summer. One is for American Psycho which has minor cuts, and the other Audition which had 2 minutes cut from the R rated release. Oh Audition is in the original language and subtitled as well

If only they could have done the same with High Tension, but who knows if they will release the true version on dvd immediately?

It sure would be fun too see the audience reaction too such a film. But it sucks that it is compromised for mainstream audiences.

After seeing Sin City and surprised with the excessive depravity and grotesque violence it got away with. I further think the NC-17 is a worthless rating that should be abolished and leave R high enough. Since from what I have read, while HT is violent,it has very few actual murders throughout the running time. But is nasty when it hits. Which is a huge difference from being hammered with nonstop nastiness ala Sin City.

So why is one NC-17,but the other not? I know some will say since it was 'stylized' and had yellow blood in some scenes + was black and white,it was 'ok' for an R according to the MPAA. But that is bullshit in my opinion. Since graphic violence is graphic violence no matter what color the blood is

I think it just goes to show how subjective all this is. "Tx Chainsaw Massacre" was/is notorious among mainstream audiences for gore, but as we all know there isn't very much graphic violence at all... just a hell of an effective film that gets way under your skin, thus amplifying every drop of blood and suggested atrocity.

In the case of "Haute Tension", there is a good deal of very graphic violence (including a power-saw scene that makes Tx Chainsaw's blade-work seem positively dainty), but what I think separates this film from all the other so-called ultra-gory fare is that it does not pull a single punch. There is no "relief", comic or otherwise, and no attempt at piety or redemption. It's simply unrelenting.

But, likewise, "Audition". If Lion's Gate can see fit to release this to DVD uncut (and in Japanese!), one wonders why the different policy for "Haute Tension"? I suspect they think it may have more mainstream appeal, and perhaps that's not quite so dubious a proposition as I suggested in my previous post. I'd like to think North American audiences are positively starving for just this sort of pulse-pounding, no holds barred intensity... and the excellent acting, brilliantly assured direction, editing, and sound design might appeal to those who otherwise wouldn't dip their toe into such otherwise cheap genre waters

A dub is the breaking point for me. I could have beared an R film with the voices sounding natural, but a dub lowers the quality of a movie so much IMO it isn't even funny, even if it's a Spaghetti Western.

I saw the R-rated cut tonight.

The only things I could tell were trimmed somewhat were the
Spoiler:
father beheading sequence
and the concrete cutter sequence.

And those are just trimmed, not cut completely. Most of the gore remains.

The dubbing is really strange, since it only factors in the conversations between the two girls. The rest of the film is subtitled. Who knows why…

Whhaaaaat? They only dubbed the two characters? I mean, I wasn't thrilled when they announced it was going to be a dubbed version -- but if you're gonna do it, do the whole job! Weeeird.

Let me correct myself: it's MOSTLY the two characters. The little dialog the family has is dubbed too.

But once the film kicks into high gear, they start with the subtitles.

NC-17 is for idiot parents who would bring their 3 year old to the movie because they are too cheap to hire a babysitter.

The NC-17 was actually created with the best of intentions -- but it seems that ANYthing "harsher" than an R (NC-17, Unrated, etc.) will inevitably have trouble getting newspaper advertising space and a spot on the Wal-Mart DVD shelves.

This is what the "X" rating was created for many a moon ago, but (for some reason) it was the only rating that the MPAA didn't copyright, which meant that the porn-makers could borrow it at will. The NC-17 was meant to remedy that error, but it just never seems to work out that way.

(Feel free to offer corrections on this history lesson; it's from an article I read quite a long time ago - but I think I got it right.)

Edward Douglas of ComingSoon.net had an interview with HT leading lady Cecile de France (and her translator), and I snipped a part that pertains to what we've been discussing:

CS!: After picking up the American distribution rights, Lions Gate decided to dub parts of it into English. There were still a lot of subtitled French bits, so how did they decide what to dub and what not to?

de France: They decided that Marie goes to Alex's family to learn English, so all of the Alex family members were speaking in English. When I speak to the police and to the gas station man, it's in French. That's it, no? I haven't seen the English version yet.

Translator: I'll explain, because I saw it. Basically, they changed the story to make the dubbing work, so that Marie is going to her American friend's house in the south of France, so she can practice her English, but she's French, so anything that happens outside that family unit, happens in French. That's why it goes back and forth that she speaks to her friend Alex in English-Alex is American-but the other part, she speaks to everybody else in French, and it kind of shows the duality of Marie's character without giving anything away.

CS!: Did you insist on doing your own dubbing?

de France: Insist? No, they proposed it to me. That's better if it's me. I like to play in English, because it's more dynamic.

Translator: The only person they proposed that to was Cécile.

CS!: Was the English script very different from the French one?

de France: There was not another script.

Translator: It was very well translated. She had to act it out.

de France: I went to the studio and they gave me the new lines in English, and I said, "Okay, let's do it." I don't know if Alexandre had a look at this translation. We trust Lions Gate.

Fuck Lions Gate, their R rated version, and their dubbing! A friend of mine just sent me the uncut disc with original French language (with English subtitles).

that's very true, but with the more prevailent "unrated" plastered all over DVD's - it's one of the easier ways of getting around the NC-17 stigma.

Damn you Wal-mart.

From IMDB:

Lions Gate cut 1 minute for US Theatrical Release to get an "R" rating and also dubbed the film in English using Marie's real voice for her part. New Korean Special Edition 2-disc set is uncut with English subtitles. There is also a PAL disc from Hong Kong that is uncut and in English.

Christ. I think a previous poster nailed it right. Lion's Gate doesn't know who their market is. People chomp at the bit for an NC 17 horror film. It generates all this buzz, for months, and would probably do just as much business as an R rated cut, maybe more. When the fans hear about the cuts, most just don't bother, and everyone's disappointed, and the film suffers.

And changing the story to make the dubbing work?

The "story" was only changed a little bit: the two girls go to the family farm to study for school.

I respectfully disagree with the NC-17 assessment. It would NOT do the same business. Not by any means. Plus there's the advertising complications...

The film's trims are pretty small when you look at it. The film doesn't suffer. I wouldn't get too upset. There are plenty of opportunites for you to see the original cut if you desire.

Re: Will Lions Gate keep their word on High Tension(NC-17 release) or not?

So here we are in 2021, and DVD is firmly in the rearview mirror of a good number of movie fans. People wanting to see something like High Tension can access it with a few clicks, which is what I did since it's freely available in my neck of the woods on TubiTV and Hoopla.

That's where the good news ends. As discussed at length in this thread, a lot of people had concerns about Lionsgate releasing a butchered version of the movie. In hindsight, the LG DVD releases weren't so bad as the studio made both the R-rated and uncut versions available. On Tubi and Hoopla, you can only get the R-rated theatrical cut.

The dubbing/subtitling mix confused the living hell out of me because the rock I live under is just big enough to block out news about weird dubs. (Actually, I'm very disciplined when it comes to paying no attention to online discussions about movies before I watch them.) LG's attempt to incorporate the English dub into the plot is pretty original, I'll admit, but it was handled very badly because just by watching the film, I had no idea Alex and her family were supposed to be American and that Marie was practicing her English.

Regardless of which language was being spoken, the story's big reveal wasn't executed very well, and I'm saying that as someone who's watched the movie once before. (Just to clarify, I first saw this movie on a R3 (or maybe R0) release that had the original French dialogue but had a lot more cuts than the R-rated version.) I read the thread where Aja talked about how his original script had the revelation in the final few minutes of the movie; I also read an interview on another site where he felt that original version was 'clearer'.

Having sat through this movie a second time, I think that moving the revelation to the very end may have helped. As it is, with the reveal coming with about 20 minutes left in the film, it does that thing that people hated from Serenity (the one from Steven Knight) where there's little preparation for viewers before the movie takes a sharp left turn and then just keeps going as if it were proceeding exactly as advertised. (For anyone who hasn't watched Serenity, I would recommend you read spoilers about the big twist beforehand. I had the surprise spoiled for me and I enjoyed the film more than most people because I knew what to expect going in.) Dropping a bombshell on an audience is nothing new; it's just that most movies have the good sense to get out of Dodge almost immediately after they yank the carpet out from the viewer like that.

Again, it's 2021...and that means the nasty bits that got trimmed are now available on Youtube, so I was able to compare the R-rated version with the unrated one. I found that the extra seconds of gore in the uncut version weren't all that significant; the shortened scenes in the R-rated cut got the point across. Having said that, people who are into the more graphic stuff will certainly appreciate the unadulterated version of the movie.

Thinking back, I might be more forgiving towards the R-rated version because my first exposure to HT was that horrendous region-whatever release which had as much as 10 minutes removed. Seeing the LG theatrical cut was a massive improvement when compared to that initial viewing.

After getting a few other New French Extremity titles under my belt before revisiting this one, I would rank HT at the bottom of the list, mainly because of the twist. I know some people are completely OK with how it was handled (like I said, I read the spoiler-filled thread from top to bottom), but even after this second viewing, I find that I'm not crazy about it for the reasons I stated above.

Also, in terms of the on-camera kills, the first one IMHO is the only one that's really original. The maiming of a couple of the other victims as well as the choice of weapon for the final kill certainly elevate HT to the level of New French Extremity, but the creativity just seems to be a bit lacking.

Believe it or not, my opinion of this movie has actually improved with this second viewing. I obviously don't think it's great, but at least I don't hate it like I did when I first saw that badly censored version. I'm just glad it's available free on streaming to allow me this opportunity to reappraise it.

Re: Will Lions Gate keep their word on High Tension(NC-17 release) or not?

I haven't seen this since around the time it first came out, when I found it singularly unimpressive relative to its ferocious reputation, and wildly implausible. I have no need to revisit it. It's not a bad film (it's well made), but I agree with you, L Everett Scott, that's it's among the lesser entries under the New French Extremism rubric.

Re: Will Lions Gate keep their word on High Tension(NC-17 release) or not?

^ My take is that HT keeps its place in the NFE pantheon because it generated so much attention with the way it handled its reveal. Had Aja gotten his way and put the revelation at the very end, HT would’ve been a more conventional horror film and probably wouldn’t have been as divisive. Without the controversy, Lionsgate might have just dumped it onto DVD or not even bothered to pick up the rights at all.

I loved the fuck out of this movie. I had every incarnation on dvd. One even called by foreign title, which doesn’t make sense to me, in Switchblade Romance. I’m not sure what incarnation I have on Blu but hope to god it’s the good one.

I guess I have the UR US version. Is that the best? I think I have digital too. Which version is that?

Re: Will Lions Gate keep their word on High Tension(NC-17 release) or not?

^ I couldn't tell you about the digital version, but the Unrated physical release from LG should be the completely uncut version which runs around 91 minutes and, if I'm not mistaken, contains the original French dialogue. If your digital copy begins with Alex and Marie speaking in English with occasional French bits (with English subs) popping up, that's the US theatrical cut I described above that's slightly trimmed to run just under 90 minutes. I read that there's an all-English dub version but have no idea if any of the violence was edited down—if I were to hazard a guess, I'd say yes that version is probably slightly censored.

Switchblade Romance is what HT was called in the UK. That title makes sense to me since the killer's weapon of choice is a straight razor and
Spoiler:
Marie is romantically obsessed with Alex.
