Why did this movie *NOT* have any "inspired by/based on" credits regarding "War of the Worlds"?

(If this was Spielberg from the 70's and 80s - I'd say VERY good odds. But with modern day Spielberg, I'd say the odds are better than any other director in Hollywood)

with this one almost in the can...what happened to MI3? they were just firing directors and scouting locations a few months ago...did that just fall off the map and Cruise give all the time for this?

I love this teaser trailer. I saw yesterday before Ocean's Twelve, and it's a well crafted teaser with the right voice narration, and the reveal of the names 'Cruise' and 'Spielberg' and then 'War of the Worlds.' Good stuff.

Looks promising. I'm not sure about Cruise though. After seeing him in The Last Samurai, I realized I'm tired of seeing him in hero roles or roles where everything works out well for him. I know he's done some non-good guy stuff but very little.

Magnolia (1999)
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
Interview With the Vampire (1994)
That's out of 29 roles (including the slated-for-2006-MI3). You're right that he hasn't done too many roles like that--but they've all been relatively recent in his career.

I just checked up on the other version of The War of the Worlds (the Victorian version) and it seems laughably bad. They say they spent a 8 figure budget but it looks like it was shot on camcorders.

I like Speilberg's new stuff. Minority Report - wonderful. Catch Me if You Can - very good. Haven't seen The Terminal yet. This one looks to be good.

Well, the teaser has me interested at least.
The shot of the explosions over the hill was very well done, kind of like the explosions in the background for a nightshot in Saving Private Ryan except with a sense of impending doom. I just can't help but wonder why Spielberg would go from having aliens be friendly creatures to ones bent on our extermination. Right now, it looks like the movie could be called "E.T. : The Revenge" .

This trailor looked entertaining but I wanted more. It didn't make me want to go see this film. I guess I was just hoping to be awe'ed as I was with the ST:EpIII and Batman Begins movie trailers.
As for the good aliens/bad aliens (E.T.) references, I'm surprised you guys are even having them. It is War of The Worlds not We Come In Peace And here Are some Martian Daisy's. If it is gonna be an updated remake I can't imagine the aliens being anything but bad.

True, but there wasn't much in that teaser trailer that I haven't seen on the nights the US Military way bombing Iraq. A better teaser would have been a quick glimpse of the alien ship or an alien hand. Even it it isn't gonna be the same alien in the movie this just needed that something to push it over the top.

Wow, looks awesome to me. Spielberg, aliens, destruction of much of earth. I can't wait for this.
While we're at it though, here's a trailer for the other War of the Worlds movie, the one that's faithful to the timeline of the book. Can't say I think it looks particularly good, but who knows. It's a rather low budget effort, so I guess I can't fault them too much.
