Reasons why Red Dawn did not work

The really cool thing about "Red Dawn" is that it's a perfect 80s movie. It stars half of the brat pack and it's a hilarious melding of "The Breakfast Club" and "Rambo."

I just got through watching Red Dawn on tv and I have to say this was the worst movie. Here's why:
1. Our Military would not leave a bunch of High school kids to fight a war for us.
2. These kids had No Training at all so how could they be that good.
3. No part of this movie is even believable.
4. why didn't they just hide in the woods?

BUT, then there's a little thing called the Iraqi insurgency that has involved untrained civilians fighting a professional force with more than a little success.
We're talking about a force that has involved ten year olds in its operations and is frighteningly believeable.
Now, that said, long-term fieldcraft depicted in RD is fictious and can only be learned by training on it for months.
RD is a guilty pleasure. Although some elements take on new meaning in light of recent phenomena.

1. The military didn't 'leave a bunch of highschool kids' to fight the war. The army was fighting at several fronts. The kids were behind enemy lines. They also weren't the only resistance group operating. There are several scenes indicating an organized resistance movement and that the Wolverines wanted to make contact with them.
2. People fighting for their own country in their own country tend to be very good without much military training. History is full of this. Look at the citizen resistance movements of WWII, Vietnam, Mexican, American and Cuban revolutions.
4. Did you watch this movie? They did hide in the woods. It's actually not very easy to hide in the woods as there is very little sustainable food there. They don't fight back until after they sneak into town to get supplies after they had been just hiding in the woods.
It's a fun movie, not a documentary. I'm guessing you're too young to have been around for much of the 80's and probably not any of the 70's. It was quiet the film for its' time.

I really liked this movie--one of my all time favorites!
The ending-- I really liked how this movie has a realistic ending and not just a 'happy kill all the bad guys' ending. The way it shed light on the cuban general and how he had grown sick of war, not a typical two dimensional movie bad guy. Also, the main characters werent invincible, like most cheesy action movies.
The ending of this movie, instead of centering around the main characters, has a bigger picture, like a true to life war. The story ends with the breaking up of the wolverines and the naration ties up loose ends. Its a story about growth and fighting for what you believe in, and changing to survive, and what that change means for different characters. Kids became heroes and murderers. Everyone changed in a different way and yet they made a great team.
I remember reading some article (booklet in the DVD?) where the director defended the believability by talking about Afganistan, and how a civilian uprising kept the russians at bay for years, regardless of training and equipment.
anyway thats my random thought review

Did anyone see the hilarious South Park episode that spoofed this film??
It was the one where the town bans old people from driving(since they have been murdering people left & right unable to see properly)...and the old people revolt parachuting in and taking over the town.
As for Red Dawn,I find it a guilty pleasure and pretty amusing. For a highly 'patriotic' film, they sure do make the black teacher a moron and his death scene is hilarious because of its obviousness.
Ask yourself,an army of people are parachuting into your school field. Would you not be the least bit concerned and naively walk out towards them mumbling gibberish to yourself outloud only to be machine gunned down?
This sequence was hilariouslly spoofed in the South Park episode.

Didn't his character already graduate? I thought he was on his way to his job before all hell broke loose. Oh, and this also was the first movie that introduced me to RPGs (The weapon, not the game) great sound FX on 'em.
Gotta love those little performances by Ben Johnson and Powers Booth too!
