I prefer soft backlighting (I have theater lights behind my tv that give off very soft, dim light and glare is avoided).

Lights off.

The wife likes at least one on - so it depends what we are watching and who picked the movie.

As dark and cavelike as I can possibly get my room to be. I try not to even watch movies until it's completely dark outside.

Dimmed lights but not totally dark. I turn on a light in the adjoining room very low (it's on a dimmer switch, so I dial down quite low) to get some soft light without glare, but nothing too bright.

Lights off.

Of course the glow from my Receiver, DVD player and Cable Box provide almost enough light to read by even when the TV is off.

a single soft light behind me. I don't like it completely dark when I'm watching a movie.

Soft light for me. Watching TV in the dark hurts my eyes.

I usually keep a lamp on. The best was having a Lava lamp on top the entertaiment center, made for good ambient lighting. But unfortunatley the lava lamp was my ex's and I haven't been willing to shell out the $$$ for a new one.

Me too - although I'm not sure why. Maybe sitting in the dark and laughing is just ... creepy.

But horror movies? Lights OFF - My Little Pony Nightlight - ON

Ditto, although I could only find 5000K flo bulbs (instead of the recommended 6500K). Works great, much better than pitch black (eye strain) or having the lights on. I'm surprised no one else mentioned backlighting until you did...
