I told this to my friend who is a Star Wars fan and he said it makes perfect sense.

Well, I haven't seen Episode III yet for some reason, so I'm just going off what I know: Anakin Skywalker redeemed himself at the end of Return of the Jedi, hence the movie's title. When Luke pulls off the Vader mask, he's speaking with his father Anakin, who has at that point returned (see title of the movie) to the Light Side. If Vader had died an evil man, then I would fully agree with the decision to show a young Anakin ghost. But young Anakin is not the last time Anakin was good, now was it? In my opinion (perhaps "uninformed" by not seeing Episode III), by making this change, Lucas has butchered the significance of Anakin's redemption.

Lucas butcher something!?!

I can't wait for the Howard the Duck where they digitally replace Lea Thompson with Britney Spears and Howard shoots first.

I got $10 right now that says the original versions WILL be released on DVD within the next few years. Lucas will milk all he can out of this release, knowing that every one will buy it, then release the OT down the road knowing that every fanboy will buy that release also. Guaranteed.

I always thought the title referred to Luke reviving the jedi legacy.

I don't buy Lucas's explanation of Anakin's post-mortem appearance at the end of ROTJ (i.e., he "died" as Anakin at the end of Episode III once the dark side and the Vader persona overtakes him). It sort of contradicts what was established in ROTJ where Luke sensed that Anakin was still somewhere, like a tortured soul, in that dark vestige and that there was still goodness in him. On the other hand, the only theory that I have been using is that since Anakin was kept totally artificially alive at all times (e.g., "more machine than man"), there was evidently nothing organic left in him to even age. His old appearance at the unmasking was showing him at his current age but also due to his (mis)use of the dark side of the Force.

But that's beside the point. Hayden's short performance in spirit form does not match what Sebastian Shaw did. In the original ending, I had the impression that Anakin was now at peace, having been reborn to the Force and was proud to have a son who not only saved him, but would now carry on the Jedi tradition that he once held so proudly himself. Hayden, on the other hand, still appears as a immature punk, still looks full of himself, and gloats as if he did everything himself.

You're right--Anakin's one good deed didn't save the future of the Jedi or those involved in the Rebellion. Kind of like how Bilbo's good deed involving Gollum had absolutely nothing to do with the fate of Middle-Earth. :P Anakin's redemption is the single most important moment in his character arc, and arguably the single most important moment in the entire series.

Last I recall, It was at the hands of Bilbo that an entire order and repulbic was brought to it's knees. To relate the two, Bilbo would have to kill everyone in the shire before going on his little adventure.

I don't get why everyone is so hung up over this. It's not like Sebastian Shaw made Darth Vader in the OT. It was really James Earl Jones. Now if they decided to dub his voice, then I would be angry.

Get over it, it's his movies and he can do what he wants with them. You're acting like Lucas has raped your childhood.

Not to get too heavy, but do you think Hitler redeemed himself the day he took his life?

Let's think about it:

Obi-Wan told Vader that "if you strike me down I will become more powerful than you can imagine." So, when Vader "kills" him he becomes a spirit and the body vanishes.

When Yoda dies, he disappears.

Perhaps Anakin "dies" in Ep III but his body does NOT disappear. This puts his spirit in some kind of limbo - a purgatory, if you will. And the body gets revived and used for evil. Now, until Vader is redeemed and dies, this spirit can't be "unlocked."

This is just a theory and my speculation.

No, and I fail to see the connection, since Anakin's redemption was not suicide, but self-sacrifice to save his son's life and end the reign of the most evil figure in the Empire at that point. The two deaths couldn't be more different.

Good point. We'll have to wait and see. At this point, all we know is Obi and Yoda become spirits, but the Jedi in Episode 1 and 2 don't.
