I for one enjoyed this movie alot...Even more than the first one. Kind of reminds me of how I felt for Xmen and Xmen2. First one was fun and pretty good popcorn flick, and the 2nd one they opened it up a little more and did a better job with the action which I liked. Im kind of mixed on a sequel myself because they seem to have a good franchise on their hands, and I like these characters. I also like to see them end on a positive note and not fuck it up like others movies have. But I know it will come down to money and that will decide whether or not it happens. If it does happen, just hope it can be as fun as the first 2.

Supermallet 01-21-06 03:50 PM

If Len Wiseman and Danny McBride keep control of the series, then I imagine at least one more sequel will a) be in the pipeline and b) actually be good.

The one thing that really bugs me about this one is the timeline. In the first film, didn't Viktor say that the Elders leapfrogged through time for 14 centuries? And yet the war with the Lycans was only 600 years old. But the war was already going on when Seline was turned, and her dad was the one commissioned to work on William's prison. In the flashback, Markus, Viktor, and Amelia are all awake, so they haven't started leapfrogging yet. The only way the storyline makes sense is if William's prison was not actually commissioned for about 800 years after he was captured. But perhaps I'm remembering the first one wrong. I'm pretty sure Viktor said Seline "broke a chain that has been unbroken for 14 centuries". Is this just a screenwriting error, or is there a long period where William is sitting in a regular prison before his current prison was made?

IMRICKJAMES 01-21-06 07:53 PM

So how exactly can Selene be in the sunlight now? Is it from drinking Alexander's blood?

Patman 01-21-06 08:14 PM

Nice spoiler there, but the obvious answer is "yes".

I liked the production values, the special effects, the stunts, but I felt the story was a little on the light side, needed just a little more meat to it, but otherwise, a good followup to the first film, especially for fans of Underworld.

I give it 2.75 stars, or a grade of B-.

candyrocket786 01-21-06 08:44 PM

Overall I thought the film was pretty good, but it still left me with more questions:

Spoiler:

1. Since the film picks up right where the first left off, how does Michael know how to "transform at will"? I thought "more experienced" Lycans had to learn this trait?

2. How did William Corvinus survive all these years without feeding?

3. When Alexander Corvinus' team gets bit by William are they Hybrid Super Lycans? I wasn't sure that they were vamps to begin with.

4. Will the Historian become a Hybrid, since he was bit by Marcus?

5. How the hell does Michael get his ass kicked by Marcus, but can rip William's fucking head clean off?

I thought about that too and you're right. Viktor said "the chain has never been broken. Not in fourteen centuries." My guess is that this might be another one of Viktor's lies.
Spoiler:
Kind of like how he passed himself off as the oldest and strongest when in fact Marcus was the oldest and strongest.
That or it is indeed a screenwriting error. Albeit one that can be explained away.

Artman 01-21-06 08:54 PM

So did they not officially screen this for critics? Only 27 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes... just wondering.

Spoiler:
1. Like Selene said, Michael is the first of his kind. The extent of his powers are unknown. He might have equal power to Selene in spite of the fact that she now has a purer source of the Corvinus strain flowing through her veins.

2. Good question.

3. They were humans that were bit by William. Therefor they were stronger than your typical modern-day Lycans but unable to transform back into human form. They were basically rabid wolves.

4. No. Michael became a Hybrid becaus he had the DNA of Alexander Corvinus in his veins. Remember, Michael is one of Corvinus' human decendants. Andreas Tanis is very much dead.

5. Perhaps because William hasn't had a bit to eat in centuries and is very weak during that fight. Also, he fought uber-Selene before fighting Michael. William was probably already tired by then.

Screen Gems has not been screening most of their recent films. Frankly, I can't blame them. The critics hate movies like this (just look at most of the Rotten Tomatoes reviews), and advance negative buzz does not help.

The fans are all that matter and most of the fans seem to like this movie. Yahoo! Users: B+ 4950 ratings, boxofficemojo Readers B+ (95 votes), imdb.com 7.4/10 (731 votes).

That helps a bit... but raises another question.....

Spoiler:

Now that I think about it. Why the hell would Alexander Corvinus have anyone guarding him? I mean, he's Alexander-Fucking-Corvinus: The Actual Source and stronger than William or Marcus.

Besides, what good is Human Security against Vamps/Lycans?

Spoiler:

So one can drink the blood of Corvinus and become Super Vamp/Lycan (Selene, no previous Corvinus dna), but one cannot survive a bite from a Hybrid (with Corvinus' blood already in their veins)?

dadaluholla 01-21-06 09:44 PM

Just got back from seeing it this evening. WOW. Absolutely everything i was hoping it would be. 100% pure popcorn munching eye popping bliss. Now get the 3rd one finished while Kate can still fit in the latex. COMPLETE THE TRILOGY! Wooooo!

:)

Spoiler:
They weren't his bodyguards. They were regular humans loyal to Alexander. They helped him keep the Lycan/Vampire war secret from the rest of humanity. Think of them as the Watchers from the Highlander universe but with more to do than merely observe.

Although they were armed in case of Vampire and/or Lycan encounters, their purpose was to deal with humans. Keeping any witnesses silent (like those that observed the big subway shootout in the first film) but never killing them.

Spoiler:
First off, Alexander was neither Lycan nor Vampire. Nor was he a hybrid. He was merely the progenitor of both races since one of his sons was bitten by a wold (William) and the other by a bat (Marcus). Selene is now a super Vampire because she has Alexanders blood in her veins and she was already a vampire. If a Lycan were to bite her now, she may very well become a hybrid like Michael (only more powerful, given that she has the actual blood of Alexander Corvinus coursing through her veins).

As for Tanis, he was not merely bitten. Marcus bled him dry, so to speak. He was killed. Also, Tanis did not have any Corvinus DNA so a bite form a Lycan would have killed him. That is assuming he was turned and not pure born. I don't know if a Lycan bite would kill a pure born. Perhaps only injure them (assuming the bite is not too severe) but not turn them.

He just was.

I really enjoyed the film, I thought it moved very quick with some great action pieces (Weisman seems to have studied up on action staging) and sufficient performances by all..except Speedman, he was there just to look pretty. Much better than the first which I wanted to like, but felt a little empty.

A couple of nitpicks...the mythology is dense (or maybe I am), in the beginning I couldn't figure out who was related to who.

Terminator 2....there were more than a few places where I saw shots and styles lifted straight out of T2. I don't normally catch this kind of stuff, but it was so in your face.

Otherwise, I dugg the hell out of it...and a nice booming audio track too!

It is a little dense, but it goes like this:

Alexander Corvinus, through a genetic mutation, became immortal (doesn't die by old age, disease, and can take a lot of physical damage). He had two sons, Markus and William. Markus turned into a vampire, William into a werewolf. Markus turned Viktor, a human, into a vampire. We don't know if Amelia was turned or pureborn.

Seline was turned by Viktor. Michael was Corvinus' human descendant (either Corvinus had a human daughter or human son), and was therefore able to survive a bite from both a vampire and lycan to become a hybrid.

I think that's basically it, for the major characters. Kraven might have been pureborn or turned, it's never mentioned.

Spoiler:

1. i think he's always been able to. it's just natural for him. he did it in part 1 as well.

2. He's immortal. Hunger won't kill him. He doesn't need blood because he's not a vampire.

3. They're come from direct bites from William. Once he was locked away, he could no longer make PURE werewolves. Through generations, the people he bit bit others, and they bit others, etc. and i believe it's safe to assume the rabid acts and not being able to change to human eventually wore off in the dna.

4. No, only people who are direct descendants of the corvinus bloodline become hybrids.

5. Several reasons can be attributed here. 1) he's fighting to save selene 2) he now knows he's damn near invincible, so he can fight with reckless abandon 3) when he fought marcus he didn't know his limits. I need to see this scene again.

btw, what theatre in houston did you see it, just curious. i live in houston.

I was under the impression they were hoping for a Trilogy.

I really dug this, alot gorier than the first one (and a lot less dialogue)

Also, don't forget that William has been locked away in the dark for centuries. He's not at full strength, nor is he as capable of a fighter as he used to be. Plus, he probably went mad in there, so the only person he recognizes is Markus.

Yeah I was just watching the news and they were talking about how UNDERWORLD 2 was kicking ass at the box office this weekend. I guess anything could happen between now and the next few weeks but it's still cool to see it doing ok.

Supermallet 01-22-06 10:55 PM

I just think it's great to be able to say that Underworld is the #1 movie in America. :)

Dudikoff 01-22-06 11:43 PM

I'm always happy to see a successful rated R movie because it results in more being made. I don't think a horror movie has to R to be good, but they sure are funner for us folks who like blood and guts.

I really enjoyed the movie, perhaps more than the first. Besides the so called "cool factor," which I think is a tad bit corny, it was an interesting story with a quick pace. The best characters in the Underworld movies seem to be the bad guys though. Kate and Scott are very bland actors. Of course, no one watches Kate for her acting abilities. If your reading this Kate, sorry.

Supermallet 01-23-06 12:17 AM

Actually, I think Kate was quite good in both films. As far as the villains go, Markus was excellent in his bat form, and William got so little screen time that I would almost call it a cameo.

woofman 01-23-06 07:19 AM

Saw this Saturday and LOVED it!

LOTS more action than the first, and I was skeptical how cheesy the effects might be, but they were GOOD! I was surprised how bloody it was, not that thats bad or anything, I'm just still in awe that a sequel could be so good. It's nice not to be dissapointed for a change.

Like some of the other posters here, I was a little confused about the story line/character lineage, but I look forward to watching it again and again to figure it out.

The HD-DVD/Blu-ray DVD will be mine!

OldBoy 01-23-06 01:35 PM

saw this and thought it was merely ok. i don't think it was a lot better than the first or even better period. it wasn't horrible mind you, but i thought it would be better. i didn't expect too much going in anyway, but still i was left with a feeling it could have been much more.

tell me again, what was Victor's original plan from the first movie?

Watch Serendipity.

I saw this this weekend, and I LOVED it. Yes it was mindless action. I thought Kate played a bit too much like an emotional weenie in this one, but otherwise I was impressed to no end... Markus's wings rocked.

i don't think ice skating in Central Park can be considered mindless action!

He had no plan. He was asleep. Once he woke up his only "plan" was to kill Michael. Viktor has a thing about "inter-immortal" breeding. :D

SeekOnce 01-23-06 03:53 PM

Found the story a bit messy to follow with one viewing so I'm hoping on some clarification here:

Spoiler:
Markus makes a deal with Viktor on his deathbed to turn him and his army to immortals. I just can't remember why. It was to help control William and the rest of the Lycans right? Since they were getting way out of hand?

Also, in that intro scene when William is caught, I could've sworn I heard Viktor banish Markus to imprisonment as well along with William. Am I mistaken?

Yes. and
Spoiler:
he just wanted him away from the action so he wouldn't get killed or the thought was all the vamps would die thereafter.

Xander 01-24-06 09:30 AM

Saw it on Saturday. I liked it. Probably better than the first one, since I think the original drags a bit on repeat viewings. Nice effects and a decent storyline. Except they left me wondering what the hell was up with Selene at the end. But still a good movie.

Schwenkstar 01-24-06 03:53 PM

I really did not like the first installment since I thought it was just a film trying to cash in on the whole Matrix/Blade craze... and the fact that it had a really simplistic story line and ho-hum action didn't help. So when I went to see Underworld: Evolution I had very low expectations...

And I was shocked... I actually didn't hate the film!

The story line was slightly more sophisticated. The two main characters dig deeper into a mystery about the past that both helps in expanding Underworld's mythology as well as creating a sense of intrigue for the audience. The visuals seemed to be more gothic rather than slick and mainstream as the previous version was, thus creating a better sense of its own identity. Not to mention, the great actor Derek Jacobi shows up to add a great level of sophistication and respectability to the film.

However, the ending was very anti-climatic and left an otherwise decent film on a very sour note. It was very cliched and seemed to be a cop out that the audience has seen in dozens of hollywood action films. And, of course, the film does contain several occurances of Hollywood's standard formulas and plot holes throughout the narrative, but luckily the film doesn't indulge in them as much as the previous installment does.

OVerall, not a bad watch, though I would recommend you wait to rent it on DVD and save a few bucks.

She drank Alexander's blood, and since he was the first immortal, she basically became a super-vampire. Expanded powers, none of the weaknesses.
