Underrated Movie Sequels.

I don't think that anyone underrates Toy Story 2. If anything, most people (myself included) prefer it to the outstanding original. Can't wait on that Good Burger 2 yet, though

I also agree on:
Predator 2 (it was nice to see how "everyday" people dealt with the Predator)
Superman 2 (I wish Donner didn't get canned on this one. Oh how it COULD have been)
The Enforcer, Sudden Impact, Magnum Force (while not as good as the original Dirty Harry, I felt that they held their own in the series. The Dead Pool is a different story)
Any Which Way You Can (funnier than Every Which Way, mostly because of Clyde)
Beverly Hills Cop 2 (I liked that they took the action route more than comedy, plus Tony Scott made it look so great)
Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey (I like the different direction they took on the film with showing Bill and Ted in the afterlife)
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (just the animation alone kicks the shit out of the original)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (call me crazy, but I think this one was FAR creepier and scarier that the original. That guy with the metal plate and hanger alone was disturbing.)
Hannibal (while not the caliber of SOTL, everyone involved turned in solid performances, and you just can't deny Ridley Scott's filmmaking. And I liked Julianne Moore as Clarice.)
The Omen 2 (I really didn't care as much for the original as I did with this. And the kid playing Damian was far creepier.)
My Girl 2 (I thought the story was far more touching than the first)
Major League 2 and 3 (I thought they were pretty well on par with the first. The second moreso than the third though)
Halloween 3 (I liked it. I never cared too much for Michael Myers anyway, but the premise of this one was pretty cool)

I don't think Alien 3 was as bad as everyone makes it. The only thing I question was the decision
because of Sigorney Weaver's powertrip. This doesn't effect the quality of the movie itself, it was just a stupid decision

Robocop 3 manages to convey the same anti-establishment, liberal message as Robos 1 and 2. Its script is by Frank Miller, like Robocop 2, which insures continuity of themes and characters, but it has a PG-13 rating, which means it will not cause an upset stomach in adults or seriously warp its younger viewers into becoming mass murderers when they grow up. I like to say it has taken the Robocop mystique and turned it into magic.
Basil Polidouris is back to do the music and turns it into an opera. There is a visual joke, literary zinger or major surprise every five minutes or so right through to the end. The acting is fine and the direction is exemplary. The camera work is outstanding and we barely miss Peter Weller. The film is a suitable conclusion to the trilogy in that it takes the original Robocop's religious theme (Robocop is an image of Christ) to its logical conclusion in dignified fashion: the hero takes to the skies and achieves a kind of immortality through personal redemption.

Hot Shots Part Deux is funnier than the first one. Godfather Part 2 isn't underrated but I do think it is better than the first one. As I think Spider-Man 2 is better and like others said Bad Boys 2. Reloaded was way more tolerable than Revolutions.

Star Trek III: doesn't fall into that whole even-odd trap, one of the best of the original cast.
Die Hard with a Vengence: Much better than a second sequel should be. If only the ending were as good as the rest of the movie.
Temple of Doom: Like it or not, it does deliver exactly the roller-coster they were trying to make. Plus it has the best line out of the series ("...ah, shit")
Lethal Weapon 2: Best mix of chemistry of the cast in that series.
Force 10 from Navarone: Sorta sequel that does no justice to The Guns of Navarone, but is a fun WWII movie for an afternoon.

Remember when that kid went all gymnastic-fu on the raptors? That moment sums up the whole film.

Impressive. I respectfully disagree with every point, but impressive.

Although by no means great movies, I always felt THE BRADY BUNCH SEQUEL and ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES were underrated - both were better than the originals, IMHO.

In regards to Bad Boys 2...

I liked the original but it was torture trying to watch this sequel.

Interesting thread. Like most of you, I'm the sort of movie geek who initially sneers at sequels ... and then runs right out to see 'em.
I cannot accurately state that the following titles are all "underrated," because that all depends on who's doing the rating. Far as I know, the only "Non-Underrated" sequels out there are The Godfather Part 2 and chapters 2 & 3 of LOTR.
I've always been a big fan of Halloween 2, Die Hard 2, Jaws 2 and, yes, even Friday the 13th Part 2 (and especially Parts 4 and 6!). I don't think it's even necessary to mention that these sequels are nowhere near as good as their predecessors.... but I still think they're quite entertaining.
Please add me to the list of geeks who really likes Back to the Future Part 2 a whole heck of a lot. I completely understand the complaint that the movie has a little more glitz than it does heart, but I just love the whole "double-back on Part 1" gimmick and I think it's directed exceedingly well. Part 3 loses a little steam, but the Western schtick works well enough.
Superman 2 is a whole lot of fun, but I doubt it could be referred to as "underrated." I do think that Burton's second Batman is noticably superior to his first one. (And that's all I'll say about that series.) The gal who just mentioned A Very Brady Sequel and Addam's Family Values is onto something; I really like both of those. Matt mentioned Gremlins 2 in his initial post, and I just love that flick. And even though I know I probably shouldn't ... I dig both of the American Pie sequels.
As far as horror fare (which I absolutely adore), I'd give mild recommendations to, hmmm, Return of the Living Dead 3, The Fly 2, Nightmare on Elm Street 3, Final Destination 2, Scream 2, Creepshow 2, and Hellbound: Hellraiser 2.
...and here's where everyone starts thrashing: I'm a huge fan of both Matrix sequels AND I also quite enjoy both Star Wars prequels. Flame away!
(Sequels I detest, loathe and plain ol' hate: Bad Boys 2, Blues Brothers 2000, Ghostbusters 2, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Alien: Resurrection, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, and Major League 2 ... mainly because I love the first one so darn much.)

I just watched RoboCop 2 for the first time since it was released back in 1990. It has gained a stigma over the years of being quite the inferior sequel, but having just watched it I don't think it's as bad as it's reputed to be. Sure, it's no RoboCop, but it was still interesting. It had some humor, some cool action, and most of the film was easy enough to swallow. There were a couple of questionable things in the film (what was with the kid? the mayor was a caricature, Murphy's dramatic arc seemed to end halfway through the movie, etc.), but nothing so bad as to sink the whole film.
And now that I think of it, Speed 2 wasn't as awful as it's reputed to be either. It's not as good as the original, but not being as good does not automatically make it bad. You wanna see a bad sequel, so bad it could kill the franchise? See Batman & Robin or The Crow: City of Angels. THOSE are bad sequels.

I guess I'm the odd one out because i actually like bad boys 2 (and know several people that do as well), sure it can be shorter, but i think you can blame the test screening for that. (probably many of the "joke" scene's that don't have anything to do with the plot got huge laughs and they stayed in the movie)

Beverly Hills Cop II - Almost as good as the original and the third wasn't terrible either like most people believe.
Escape from L.A. - I liked it more than the original.
Back to the Future Part II - My favorite of the three.
Predator 2 - most people don't like it but I liked it more than the original, even though Arnold Schwarzenegger is my favorite actor.
Shangahi Knights - as good as the first one was this was a lot funnier.
Wayne's World 2 - equal to the first one
Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey - I like this one a lot more than the first one. It's not like either are mean to be great movies yet people make this one out to be a terrible movie.
Rambo III - I love this movie! I have no idea how this is rated a 4.1 on IMDb. Pure non-stope action.
By the way I have to agree with Bad Boys II. The first was just another action movie but the second was pure non-stop entertainment. I loved it.
