I thought the tension and suspense were very effective, I for one was nawing on my fingers during the real tense moments. The teenage guy next to me lost it at one point virating the entire row with his jump.
Spoiler:

I also liked the fact that for a thriller/suspense film the ending was bleak, grisly and quite distressing.

Oh yeah, good tension.

At the theater I was in, women were screaming at certain moments.

I'd like to see it again with a packed theatre to see the reaction of the crowd, this morning's 11am screening was really pathetic about 15 peeps. Some father brought in his 10 year old son, I am sure he going to have some nightmares from this film.

Spoiler:
I also thought the cinematography during the final attack was also very well shot, the camera never fully going under the water as you start to see the large number of sharks devouring the guy.

There was a good cross-section of people at the preview I attended, an almost packed theater. A lot of laughs at certain moments as well.

I know I want to see it, but maybe I will take my wife to see it in a few weeks if she is having trouble going into labor.

Open Water did well this weekend with a theater count of only 47, bringing in $1,035,000 and being #16 on the list this weekend. It averaged $22,021, and compared to the top two on this list (Collateral averaged $7,653 and The Village $4,442), that's great.

I can't wait to be able to watch this film!

The Alamo Drathouse is Austin is showing the water on the lake. You watch it from floats. Talk about creapy.

Did anyone else notice Broken Lizard's Steve Lemme as a passanger on the boat ? I think it was him, he had a couple close-ups, but no lines.

i noticed him. wasn't sure, then i remembered how he looked in club dread. i think the highlight was who was in attendance the night i went -- ben stiller and christine taylor were there. sean hayes and michael hitchcock came in a group.

anyway, my concise, spoiler-free review of open water: poor characterizations. false/contrived drama. clumsy editing. uninspired camerawork. purely a creation of marketing hype. i heard similar complaints mumbled by others as the theatre was letting out.

The poor acting, especially by Blanchard Ryan, took a lot away from this film.

Given the setup of how this scenario could happen (2 people being stuck in the middle of the ocean and left behind by their deep water diving boat tour), I wasn't all that impressed with how this film unravelled itself, though the predictable finger-pointing between the boyfriend and girlfriend as to how they got themselves into this predicament did lend itself to some amusing verbal jabs. Perhaps I needed some dramamine before viewing this film too.

Anyhow, I recommend as a rental at best.

I give it 2 stars or a grade of C.

I thought it was allright... a tad overrated considering all the hype. It was very short and yet I was checking my watch alot... at the same time, I was on the edge of my seat alot as well - perhaps I had to pee. I wouldn't buy it on DVD and I have no reason to see it again. For those who are afraid of the ocean though, this could be pretty scary. I have been attacked by jellyfish while surfing before and once I was headed out down the beach to go surfing when they were rescuing some other dude who had been attacked by a shark - bite marks on his side and everything - I just took a look at him, walked on by and headed towards my usual spot and went surfing that day. So the ocean doesn't really scare me much (not that I'm all tough or anything)... Isolation is pretty scary, but I don't think that's what they captured here. They could have, but they didn't.

Bingo. Not a criticism heard often, but the acting IS terrible in the film.

If you saw the movie before it became so hyped, it would've been a much better experience (believe me). I agree the acting leaves something to be desired, but it's still a blast to watch for me

Open Water.. ahh SHARK! Worth seeing or not?

I heard some info regarding that "Open Water" will be as intense and scary as Jaws. I would like to hear more reviews whether it'll be good to go see or not.

The only downside I can think of is that the movie is rather short about 75 min. long. I can't complain, however, because you can only do so much in open water without drowning or being killed unless someone in a boat comes by and rescues you.

So, any official word from someone who did see it somehow?

I love independent films, but I spent close to an hour building the print last night so i could watch it and then i watched it and it honestly was a waste of time. The acting wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. IT just seemed to me that you can sum up the movie movie in three sentences. The leave for vaction. There on the boat to go diving. They get stuck in the middle of ocean.
I think there was a few minutes of terror, but i left the theater feeling very empty.
I think the only positive thing about it was the reality of the situations that the characters went through. I think most Hollywood films would have to go all out in the ending. Open Water, i think stayed real in their ending.
I don't want to come off like i need nudity(which there actually was in this, and she was beautiful), blood, car chases, and explosions to enjoy a movie. I honestly don't, in fact I have an intense hatred for films that have to stand on those elements. But this movie was also missing a lot more than just those fancy things. It just didn't have any feeling whatsoever.Maybe i'll enjoy when it isn't 1am. I might have to check it out again just to see if it does anything for me a second time.

It ended rather suddenly I thought. I didn't know anything about the true story when I saw it so I wasn't expecting what happened to take place.

He is married to the movie's star Blanchard Ryan & was on set the entier time of filiming & helped teach her how to dive.

Saw the movie last night & like it but definitely didn't think it was anything special. Not nearly as scary as people are making it out to be.

My main problem w/ the movie as people mentioned is the girl (Blanchard) really can't act. In fact, I think it's the worste leading film performance I've seen in a LONG time. She has no range of emotion & cannot convey panic in her voice.

One thing I really thought they should have done, at least for me, to give the movie a little more of a horror/shock value was at the end
Spoiler:
I think it would have been really cool & get a good reaction out of the audience if as the girl was kissing her husband, & you didn't quite know if he was dead or not as the camera does one of the on the water & then briefly under the water shots, you see that both the husbands legs are gone
. Maybe it's just me, but I thought that would have really been cool.

Grade: B+

From my grade, you see that I'm highly favorable to it, so the only two things that I had problems with, and they are minor in my opinion, is that:
-I loved the biuld up of tension but a few times it left by being anti-climatic, except the final 20 mins-that was great.
-His camera needed to move around some more; it was too static (I'm talking about anything not involving the couple in the water).

Great way to kick this fall's horror line-up. Did the female lead remind anyone of Charlize Theron?
Great ending.....
