This. My GF had never seen Jaws before, and she flipped out with the head in the boat, but didn't flinch when the shark came out of the water. It's like Spielberg has always said - that shot of the head partially ruins the shot of the shark as far as jumping out of your seat is concerned.

Saw the 2:00 show today @ AMC and they left the house lights on for the first 20 minutes. It took me out of the film, because all I could think about was how I was going to chew their asses out when it was over. $12.50 for a matinee & leaving the lights on is inexcusable. Needless to say I got a free pass for another film.

Fuck me, I didn't realize this was today! I would've put in for the day off :sad:.

Wonder if there were any actual 35mm prints? Doubt it. If this is same master they struck for the Blu-ray and the same DCP I saw elsewhere, then it's a real stunner.

the DCP actually has the 7.1 mix that is on the bluray.

I always watch it with the mono myself, but from what I remember of the remix at the cinema, it was largely unobtrusive. The video looks stunning. Very film-like and lots of grain, and stunning detail.

I missed out on this, but a local theater will be doing some 35 mm screenings in July (including a midnight one) so I hope to make it to that.

Then, when the head popped out, and when the shark appeared while Hooper was in the cage. It was great. I assume those people were first time viewers.

I've seen Jaws many times and I still always look away (and plug my ears) when Quint does his chalkboard thing. *shudder* :lol:

I had a great time at this showing. It was nice seeing it up on a big screen with a crowd that was really into it. But Fathom should've made it known that there was also a Ben Mankiewicz outro (about John Williams' score) after the credits. A lot of folks had already left by then.

The 3D conversion was pretty good. Some scenes really showed a good amount of depth. There are some stereoscopic edges present in some scenes and a stutter with scenes involving fast moving action (people running or moving their arms around quickly.) But overall it was a good experience. Especially if you took advantage of the $3 Saturday.

I've seen Jaws a few times in 70mm, so I skipped the IMAX presentation. Didn't care to experience the remastered sound. :shrug:

I went to the IMAX since I don't care for 3D being a distraction. The explosion at the end really packed a punch.

Agreed that the 3D wasn't overdone in the re-release.

I saw the movie during its initial theatrical release. Now that I'm older, I spent more time enjoying the details in the film.

One things I noticed on my Saturday (non-IMAX) viewing: At the end, while Brody is shooting at the shark with the rifle, there's a quick shot of the shark with a voice over of "blow up!". I don't remember this from the initial theatrical release.

Of course, I was only nine at the time. Possible that I missed that detail on my initial viewing.

FYI - Quint's Indianapolis speech remains one of the best monologues in movie history *. I read that he was drunk during the initial shooting of the scene - and rambled on about his wife and various other topics. The footage was unusable.

He returned to reshoot the scene the next morning - and just nailed it.

* I think it's up there with Rutger Hauer's Blade Runner speech and Peter O'Toole's address to his sons in The Lion in Winter.

Went to the IMAX, since the gimmick 3d wasn't worth the $3 the ticket cost. Anyone else notice some weird focusing issues in portions of the screen? I remember noticing it a few times, most notably when Brody is walking down the sidewalk talking to the mayor and bumps his head on a hanging sign. The names on the sign were completely illegible. I only noticed because I noticed being able to see a lot more detail throughout the movie than I ever had before when seeing it on the big screen.

I didn't notice it. I wish I had known beforehand, I would've looked for it. I think we are the only two to see the IMAX one.

I got the 4K for Christmas last year and showed it to our oldest at their insistence and they dug it. We went to a RealD 3D show today, their first 3D movie in a theater, and had a good time. The 3D worked well and the movie is, as always, wonderful. Lots of "You're in the water, too!" 3D effects.

Back in theaters August 29th in IMAX for it's 50th anniversary

Even though I have it on 4K disc and digital, I was only 2 when Jaws came out and never had the opportunity to see it in the theater. I think I will do this.

There are only 10 theaters in the world that support IMAX 70MM

3 are in California. In your parts, there is one in Fort Lauderdale.

Damn it's not playing in any of my local AMC's. Hopefully they'll add it in, I missed the IMAX screenings from a few yrs back.(what anniversary was that for?)

Not an anniversary. It was remastered in IMAX for the first time in 2022.

Boo. Yeah I thought it was the same since Oppenheimer. Unfortunately Jacksonville as zero true IMAX screens anymore. All LieMAX. We used to have one at the World Golf Village where they played the PGA Tour but we lost that so everything got shut down.
I'm surprised even Orlando doesn't have a film IMAX Theater. They do still have one true IMAX screen though.

I don't get IMAX. They make such a big deal about quality but then there are so few ways to experience it. Why do they rigorously determine the quality of the film and the cameras where it is so much trouble to even film scenes in IMAX but then whore out their names to Subpar screens that are nowhere near large enough to take advantage of filming on true IMAX film? It seems like its universal for AMC theaters that IMAX screens still have the terrible old seats too. At least my theater finally fixed the big tear that was in the screen for years.

I saw it for the 40th. It was my first time on the big screen.
