JAWS re-release

Hey all,

Last night i was lucky enough to see a screening of a BRAND NEW print of Jaws here in NYC.

The good news: The print looked absolutely amazing.

The bad news: it utilized the same new sound mix that was used for the DVD,including new foley effects. :(

It was my first time seeing it on the big screen and was the last on my list of my top 5 movies ever to see there.
It's amazing how much more you can appreciate films when you see them in a theater on a big screen and with an audience. There are so many layers to this film and I'm truly amazed at how commercial it is/was and yet still has action, depth, tension and drama.

After the film was over, there was a Q&A session with one of the producers and Richard Dreyfuss and I got to ask the last question. I told them that I was 26 years old and this was my first time seeing it in a theater. There is a whole generation of movie-goers out there who have never seen it as such and I asked if there was anything special planned for the 30th anniversary next year (re-release?)? The audience applauded and some people in the front started chanting "re-release."

Both of them pretty much dodged the question and never answered it.

Think we'll get one? Or is this how Universal is going to be showing the movie from now on? I just thought it was odd that they would strike a new print just for this one screening if they weren't interested in seeing how it would do for a re-release.

Thoughts? Would you go to see it?

I would love a rerelease. I grew up only knowing the butchered TBS version, to be able to see it in a theatre would be a real treat.

I saw this movie about 20 times in the theater back in the 70's,one more time could'nt hurt lol

asianxcore 06-29-04 01:47 PM

never saw it in the theater. so a new theatrical re-release would be sweet.

not only butchered, but the whole film's pacing is ruined by all the commercial brakes. TV does this film no justice for it's editing or widescreen imagery.

Forget the whole Greedo shoots first debate

I want the ORIGINAL whale sounds again!!

reminds me of the tv version of "Sixteen Candles":

Jake: OPEN UP!
Long Duk Dong: No way Jose!
Jake: You kicked me in the gut
LDD: Oh, dat you?
Jake: yeah, dat me.

Lacks the frisson of "grabbed my balls".

Why re-release good movies when one can just remake them? We can even improve them by removing whatever was appealing about them the first time so it looks good in a commercial or trailer.

God - that is the WORST idea I have ever heard.

On the other hand, if universal was to steal a page from Jim Cameron's book for Jaws 5. How about this: an ARMY of killer sharks attack Amity, wiping out the townsfolk. The army sends a squad of marines in to find out what happened. Throw in a cute orphan girl, a pluck love intrest, and a final hand-to-hand battle with the Queen Shark at the end and you have all the properties of a WINNER!

In case it wasn't clear, it was in jest as that is what Hollywood does with remakes all the time and not a comment that they should remake this or any other movie instead of re-releasing them.

I would go see it in theatres, only seen it on TV and DVD.

I'm 23 years old, and Jaws is probably one of my favourite movies of all time, and certainly one of the main reasons I decided to become a filmmaker myself... I WOULD KILL to see this on the big screen in a newly minted print... I really hope Universal would consider a re-release, but after E.T. tanked, they may be pretty wary of it.

I'd easily shell out the cash to see this movie in the theater.

That's what I told them.

26yo and last night was a dream come true. :)

Just wish it had been the original mono mix. :(

dude, where was the screening and how come I didn't know about it.

"I must be slipping in my old age".

digitalfreaknyc 06-29-04 10:06 PM

dammit! I should have skipped the deathdream screening (the print was really lousy) and saw this. If Only i'd known.

there was also a screening of before sunset on monday that I missed at the american museum of the moving image with the director and the actors q & a.

I'll have to make sure not to miss the grease 2 screening on thursday to make up for these!!!

:)

digitalfreaknyc 06-30-04 08:12 AM

Sunday,

They're having a Pacino "marathon" at BAM as well. Let me know if you ever find out about screenings of older films. I usually checked 777film but since they changed their layout, I can't see a nice listing of ALL movies playing. :(
I'll totally go with.

FYI...i found out about this one from the Village Voice. They had a 1/4 page ad in last weeks paper. I called immediately and reserved my tix.

Amel 06-30-04 09:09 AM

After my mother and my aunt went to see this when it was out, my parents decided I was too young to see it so they wouldn't take me. I'll NEVER forgive them for that!

If it's re-released I'll be the first in the line almost daily.
