Either way Johnny Lee ended up in Ruggsville County by the age of five and spent his early years in the Ruggsville home for orphaned boys where he was already considered a disposable youth.

Sometime around 1928, the young troublemaker Johnny Lee was taken in by an extreme fundamentalist and local pastor named Theodore Jensen Rhodes, his wife Alice and Charlie their son. Charlie was the same age as Johnny, and soon the two were close as real brothers.

More on the history of the Rejects HERE... The bios are actually pretty good reads and give the characters a ton of depth.

saw an early showing of this today. it was one of my most anticipated movies of this year and I can say I was not disappointed. as another poster mentioned, I loved how all the actors really fleshed out their characters. I really liked the pacing, even though it might be slow to some. the movie I think was 10 or so minutes longer than I think it should've been but overall I was really pleased. I felt kind of weird because I was laughing at a lot of the stuff in the movie. such as Otis' one liners, or the stuff that intentionally supposed to be 'black humor' (no one else was laughing). I really enjoyed the movie, and it was nice to see that almost the entire audience was really disturbed by the movie. it was almost dead silent throughout the entire film, as the audience probably didn't know what to say or react.

it's dirty, slimy, grimey, bloody, disturbing, sadistic, hell-rasing fun. and I loved EVERY minute of it. :)

I wouldn't go that far, but I think she definitely has a future in more horror/genre movies if she wishes. I think she more or less did these because her hubby was the director. Her interviews do make her out to be rather intelligent though.

I thought I remember hearing something about her wanting more money, but not a 100% sure that was the reason.

Giles 07-26-05 10:43 AM

all in all, I quite liked this film, William Forsythe really gave a great performance as Sheriff Wydell. However, my biggest beef with this film was the ending
Spoiler:
with all the gore and violence I thought the three's demise in a hail of bullets was lame, whether or not this was due to MPAA pressure or what. I was led to believe we'd see a scene like the ending of "Bonnie and Clyde" and 'Sonny' Corleone death in "The Godfather" with major squib fx, here the cgi/editing felt like a letdown to what should been a truly shocking sickening end... oh well

True she'll probably do a lot more genre flicks... And of course she did it 'cause Rob was director... But it wouldn't be the first time someone broke out due to getting a "favor role."

onebyone 07-27-05 01:51 PM

I hope she at least breaks out to more genre roles. I think she is just fantastic. I would like to see her in different roles, although I think I will always love Baby best.

My guess is that if Zombie makes more movies about different characters (which he pretty much has to do now), then she's a shoo in for a cameo role at least.

Troy Stiffler 07-27-05 05:16 PM

Going to see it again this weekend. Can't wait!

Terrell 07-28-05 02:10 PM

Berdanelli's review seemed to indicate that he didn't care for the genre when it was first around during the 70s, so it's logical he wouldn't like it now.
That's not true Dr. DVD. Berardinelli has given a number of horror films good reviews. Two reviews I can remember without even looking them up, come to mind.

Halloween - ****
Nightmare On Elm Street - ***1/2

The difference here is Carpenter and Craven, and those two films are about dozen light years ahead of Zombie and his films, in terms of quality and talent.

onebyone 07-28-05 03:39 PM

By genre, I don't think Dr. DVD (correct me if I am wrong) meant horror in general, but instead a very specific genre of 70s exploitation movies, which the reviewer made no bones about not liking. A few lines from the review:

Zombie's goal is to pay homage to a genre that was born (and probably should have died) in the 1970s: outcasts who defy society by destroying it.

Zombie has elected to shoot The Devil's Rejects as if he was making the movie during the '70s. Cheesy freeze-frames and hand-held shots abound. It's worth noting that most of the directors being emulated were hacks, and that pretty much says all that needs to be said about the film's look.

So I think it is save to say that movies of this type just weren't the director's cup of tea regardless.

Dr. DVD 07-28-05 05:17 PM

Thanks onebyone. Yes, I was referring to the genre of exploitation, not horror, which I really wouldn't consider this movie a part of at all.

Well Rob Zombine finally fucking did something,he may not have set out to do. I'm talking about the fucking use of the word fuck. Rejects has far surpassed any other record holder and is now #1 film with the highest use of the word fuck ever!!!

This really amazes me. While I knew it had many, many uses of the word, I would never have guessed it had more than any movie ever made.

Julie Walker 08-01-05 02:56 AM

Same here and even more amazing/amusing is it runs not even close to the lengths of Scarface,Goodfellas and Casino. Thus it really packed alot of fucks in a shorter running time!

I went tonight and a couple left at this part. Of course, they were probably equally disturbed that my friends and I actually dared to laugh at the black humor of the movie.

I loved this movie. And that's saying alot considering I hated about 90% of House of 1000 Corpses. I thought Zombie did a terrible job with that one, and it just looked cheap. Not low budget in a cool Texas Chainsaw way, but cheap in a Dead Hate the Living way.

But Rejects improves upon House in every way. Honestly I can't think of another series where I made such a strong jump from hating the original to loving the followup. The motel scenes were intense, but the Forsythe stuff near the end was brilliant. The "who's the psycho here" tone, loved it. Visually this one is worlds better as well.

mikewendt 08-04-05 12:13 AM

I've seen more then a few people leave at this point... And yes I laugh through most of the flick. Great stuff...

LivingINClip 08-04-05 05:23 AM

Count me in as the type who thought 'House' was one of the single worst films in recent time. I honestly cannot think of one redeeming thing in that movie, so of course, I didn't expect to enjoy 'Rejects'. I was wrong. This movie is terrific and shows that with the recent dedication and time, Zombie can make a damn good film.

marty888 08-04-05 08:06 AM

I now know things about chickens that I really don't need to know.

As for winning the award for most uses of "fuck" - it's not something you even notice because it fits so perfectly for the characters - unlike something like HBO's Deadwood where it mostly seems forced and is VERY noticable.

You really just can't stay out of this thread, can you?

paradicelost 08-09-05 11:47 AM

I saw it last night and i absolutly loved it. I seem to be in the minority though with House of 1000 corpses, i really liked it. I will say i enjoyed Devils Rejects quite a bit more. And the other people in the theater(a whole 2 other people) seemed to be disturbed that i was laughing through most of the movie.
