Complete opposite for me. While I've known about the comic for ever, I've never read it. Never felt compelled to. The trailer looks great and makes me want to read it and see the movie.

So you've seen it already and you know that it's disappointing?

Under the Hood was kind of a neat supplement. I read the majority of it, skipping maybe a paragraph here and there.

Tales of the Black Freighter was remarkably skippable, though. For me, it distracted from the main story. I wasn't as impressed as some by the way it was inserted into the book.

My wife is reading the book now. I told her to go ahead and skip the pirate parts.

Wow. I can't imagine even bothering to read it without reading all of it.

I think I'm enjoying 'Under the Hood' more than the comic itself. Then again, it wouldn't have the same impact without the comic and learning about the current Nite Owl. At any rate, I love how it is intertwined with the main story.

Uch. How could you give someone Watchmen and say "Just skip the pirate parts"? That's ridiculous.

Ditto.

Speaking of Alan Moore graphic novels I just started reading The Killing Joke -- minus the parts with Batman, of course.

Yeah, I agree. Even though I didn't care for those parts, I certainly wouldn't tell someone to skip it.

That's what myself and my friends recently did...because it's lame and boring :)
I didn't buy "The Watchmen" to read something else...

Re: Zack Snyder talks Watchmen

It's neither lame, nor boring, and pertinent to the story on multiple levels. You're really short changing the book if you skip it.

Yeah, I'd say it's important to the book, but considering the movie is already 160mins long and The Black Freighter "short" alone is over 30mins long I'd think it would drag the movie down just a tad.;)

If the movie is good I'll most definitely pick up The Black Freighter/Under the Hood Blu-Ray.

Supermallet 02-17-09 01:48 AM

Re: Zack Snyder talks Watchmen

I'm not complaining about Snyder's decision to excise the Black Freighter material from the theatrical release of Watchmen. But I am complaining about people who tell other people to skip that material when reading Watchmen, especially when reading it for the first time.

Yeah, it's really one of those odd moments when you ask a comic fan who has never bothered reading it... it's sort of disheartening.

In any case, got my midnight IMAX ticket, so I'm excited for this.

Gives new meaning to "I did it 35 minutes ago" now doesn't it.

The IMAX closest to me (Henry Ford Dearborn) isn't playing it because it is R rated. WTF?!? I'll go see it in digital at Emagine Novi instead.

Since
Spoiler:
the Joker raping Batgirl
is the only remarkable thing about that book, it's entirely possible to do so.

Luckily, there are comics for people with shorter attention spans:

There's nothing to suggest he does that.

Feh.

I merely suggested that she skip them. She is perfectly capable of reading them if she wants to. Knowing my wife, her tastes, and her attention span, she likely would've skipped them anyway.

Some over at AICN submitted a seriously short review which was positive... this is going to be a LONG 2 weeks :(

Re: Zack Snyder talks Watchmen

I stopped reading Watchmen about half-way through. Like John Heard in Big "I don't get it"

But I did read 2 different drafts of the screenplays. Good stuff there.
