ok...just a thought to pop in my head, If Watchmen is the greatest comic/graphic novel ever, and we're having a film adapted from it..and it actually is as good as the comic, which may be offensive to say to some, would that make it the greatest comic book film ever? That is if the film is that good btw...Wouldn't that be an interesting thing to see?

I predict that, qualitatively, it will rank slightly below Josie and the Pussycats.

This view is more reflective of my tempered expectations than genuine belief it will be bad. And I liked JatP.

Well, greatest in one medium does not necessarily translate to greatest in another medium. Look at Moby Dick. Often considered the finest piece of literature ever written, outside of perhaps Hamlet, and I wouldn't say any of the movie versions would make most people's top 10 lists. Same with Hamlet.

As for it being the best comic book movie, it certainly has a fair shot, but it's not guaranteed.

Gibbons is apparently fine with the ending of the movie, according to this interview.

Any spoiler material for the movie is on page two, but I think the first sentence of this post gives you the main point.

reap the benefits as in get paid for a movie they didn't have to spend one cent to produce, film or distribute.

Not every comic book movie is a straight adaptation of a comic book though (in fact, most aren't). So you'd have to compare a straight adaptation like Watchmen to something like The Dark Knight, which isn't directly based on any comic book plot. In other words, even if it's good, just because it's based on the "greatest comic book ever" (debatable) doesn't mean it's the best comic book movie ever.

Re: Zack Snyder talks Watchmen

thats why it's an adaptation...cuz...it's formed to take a shape suitable for the medium. Like I said it'd be neat if it was the best comic book film cuz it's adapted from, again it's worthy of debate, the greatest comic book ever. Will it be? Maybe. It'll be a damn cool film hopefully though...

You didn't understand my point. Technically, both Watchmen and The Dark Knight are comic book films, because they're both based on comic books. However, Watchmen is a direct adaptation of the comic book's plot, while The Dark Knight just uses the same characters from the comic series, but didn't straight adapt the plot from the comic book. Therefore The Dark Knight isn't from "the greatest comic book ever," but could still be the superior comic book film.

Think of it in terms of James Bond films. Some are based on the original books, some are not. In that case, the adaptation of the "best Bond book ever" may not necessarily be the best Bond movie ever, because one of the ones with an original plotline may actually be a better movie.

I understand the attempted analogy, but don't think that the words Bond, original, and plot should ever be in the same paragraph.

Was the book Casino Royale some blatant ripoff of another spy novel?

Re: Zack Snyder talks Watchmen

Watchmen is settled between the two companies, will be official as of tomorrow should everything go well in court. It will come out March 6th.

Word has come that Warner Bros and Fox have settled their legal dispute over the rights to the film version of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the settlement details will be delivered to Judge Gary Feess on Friday morning, and the parties will then request that the pending legal case be dismissed, saving both studios millions, and ensuring that the film will meet its March 6th release date.

As the trade reports, no terms will be made public, but reportedly includes a “sizable cash payment” and a portion of Watchmen’s box office. As a result of the deal, Fox will have no piece of Watchmen moving forward, and will not co-distribute the film.

Am I the only one who's upset at the deal? I wanted to hear from whiny crying fanboys for months/years about how Fox wouldn't let them watch the "greatest movie of all time" and the petitions and so on....it would have been great drama. Warner could have made a movie just about that - hell, I'd probably see that movie before Watchmen.

I'm glad that it was sorted out. This was pretty much what I assumed would happen; Warner throws some money at Fox to shut up.

That what I was hoping but Fox wanted just money instead.

Mod note: If you don't have something constructive to add to the discussion you don't have to post anyway.

I'm a little concerned about the substantial changes ordered by the dueling studios:

Yes, it's so awful for someone to ask for financial compensation for something they have the rights to.

Re: Zack Snyder talks Watchmen

Fox made a mistake asking for a cut of sequels/spin-offs, becuase I'm fairly sure there won't be any (and I'm guessing Warners feels that way too). They would have made more asking for a cut of all future merchandising.

^Maybe they are including that "Tales of the black Freighter" DVD as a spin off and will now be getting a piece of that now.

It's probably likely that Fox can't foresee Warners not making Watchmen 2 and Watchmen 3 if the movie is successful.
