I just don't see the appeal of this movie. I know it is based on a comicbook but it looks like they tried to make an art film out of it. Wierd action (makes since since Tarintono has a directing part in it) and it being in black and white with random colored parts *cough*Schindler's List*cough*. Might as well have it in Japanese and subtitle it.

You ever read the comic? It's black and white. some stories have some color to highlight a certain thing. Perhaps you should give the source material a go at first or understand it a bit before slamming it as a generic knock off of whatever else.

There are tons of B&W comics but it doesn't mean a movie should be as well. Look at all the japanese comics, all B&W but the shows based on them are in full color.

Ok, here's what you do. Stop posting, go to a comic store and look at this book. The black and white is not simply a format, but it is a classic noir story and feel to it. In color it wouldn't be the same.

Just take a look at the book and the way it is drawn and you will see what we mean. This really deserves to only be in b&w with light color.

Wow! Toys! Anyone have any links w/ further pics/pricing/dates? That pic looks great, hopefully the rest do justice! I don't think I've ever been so excited for a movie that I know nothing about! I picked up the posters and a few of the comics, but I'm debating wether I want to read them before or after I see the movie....maybe 1 of the 3 stories....any suggestions? Its always neat to see how things translate, but at the same time I kinda want it to be new....I dunno...nite

The difference is that most of those comics are b&W because they're mass-produced cheaply, much like newspapers. Frank Miller could afford to do a full color comic, but he composes his Sin City work for black and white.

Also resinrats, why can't a movie be black and white anymore? Maybe to better tell the story they used B&W? Not every movie uses the same color palette, this in color would not work in its favor.

everyone else has said it well, but i just wanted to add... please know at least the smallest bit about what you are talking about before you post

Well, I'd never heard of the graphic novels, but this movie looks absolutely beautiful. I hope it's got a good story, but I plan on seeing it on April 1 just based on the visuals. Since seeing the trailer, Sin City and the new Pride and Prejudice are my two most anticipated movies this year. (Strangely, this movie opens on my sister's birthday, and P&P opens on mine. Think we'll see both together ).

The appeal is that this is something that has never been done.
Fans think of Spiderman and The X-men flicks being faithful (as do I), but this one literally is faithful to the panel.
There was no treatment or screenplay. Everyone got a copy of the comic book and they filmed it. Nothing has ever been as faithful as this is. Line for line, shot for shot (with a few added panels to establish flow in some of the jumpier transitions). Some panels will be absent in the theatrical cut due to time restraints, but the DVD will feature an option to play them, full and uncut, as three living versions of the three mini-series. They’ll be about 50 minutes apiece according to Rodriguez.
The comic kicks ass.
The cast kicks ass.
This will kick ass.

This may have been pointed out already, but I’m at work, posting on the sly, so I couldn’t check every page of this.

Question:

Has anyone come across the song that plays in the trailer?

Band is called Cells, song is Servant. or maybe it's vice versa.

Yep, the song is called Cells by The Servant. Look for the instrumental version as there's a vocal version too, which is pretty good as well.

Lets hold off on that last one...you know actually see the movie first.

It's funny, this is the DVD Talk (Internet) effect in reverse, we're proclaiming something the greatest ever before we've even seen, based only on trailers, pictures, and talent involved. Usually, we'd be tearing it apart.

Just an onbservation...my own expectations were actually raised based on the most recent trailer. After the first, I had pretty much decided I'd wait till DVD time, but the new trailer has actually convinced me to open the wallet.

I haven't tried it, so I can't vouch yet.

adding: Well, I'm home now and I can't make this work. I don't know if it's bunk or if pixelblur just removed the file. I did get a little pixelblur logo.

Given that the movie components are practically mathematical, I just did the 2 plus 2 on it.
Knowing the scenes that they haven't shown and seeing what the actors here did with the dialogue we have heard...well I would easily bet my bank account that this is going to be my favorite film of the year.

The only contender vaguely in the running is A Scanner Darkly. (Hopefully another super faithful apaptation.)

They showed us about 15 minutes of footage at the ComiCon last year and that all rocked as well.

Whenever anybody pays praise to anything it goes without saying that it is subjective to opinion.

I know for a fact that I will love this one.

This is what Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez said in person at the ComiCon in San Diego last year. They showed us the frame to scene comparisons. I can't for the life of me believe that they would go back on the DVD plan.

The sound of 10 - 20 thousand (I have no idea how many people that room held but it was HUGE) fan boys and girls oohing and ahhing when you mention something can't be that easy to forget. Can it?

P.S. This is only my word, I didn't get a transcript, but I have a very clear memory when sober. I was sober that day. I would get no kick at all from lying about stuff like this. I was and am stoked about their handling of the film.

Oh yeah. One more thing that may have been mentioned, but Rodriguez talked about the Screen Directors' Guild that day. They would not allow him to invent the credits title of "Co-Director" to give Frank Miller equal credit. He quit their organization in order to use that particular credit (apparently you can never re-join) and then made up the credit "Guest Director" as well.

Unless he was pulling our leg, that's a true story, too.
