This thread makes me wonder: is there any horror movie that everybody can agree on being scary and good? It seems that horror is a genre where even the most reknowned (sp?) classics have detractors thinking them nothing exceptional and a waste of time.
Honestly: is there really such a thing as a "good" horror movie or is it all in the eyes of the beholder?

Here's an interesting article from DARK HORIZONS.
You will not believe the political stupidity swirling around the film:
A minor controversy is brewing over the teen horror movie opening in wide release across the US today. The FOX flick has a group of young actors going on a camping trip in the West Virginia wilderness which turns into a terrifying experience as they're pursued and hunted by three in-bred cannibals who "prowl the countryside looking for outsiders to eat". Now it seems local politicians in WV aren't happy with the way their state is being portrayed, in fact Governor Bob Wise talked with The Charleston Mail about the film: "I think it's trash. Someone is trying to play upon a false stereotype that some people continue to harbor about West Virginia. ‘Deliverance' didn't accurately represent Tennessee or Georgia or wherever it was supposed to be set, and this movie doesn't represent what West Virginia is like, either. If you get lost in West Virginia, you're more likely to encounter a friendly hunter or fisherman who will be eager to help you in any way he can". Some people however at least have a bit more common sense such as local film critic Steve Fesenmaier who said "I understand (people being upset about the stereotypes), of course, but I have to say . . . who really cares? Do people who watch all of the TV series on crime in New York City really think that the town is just one giant crime wave?". As someone whose own culture was grossly misrepresented with a just plain dumb/non-existant stereotype in a major studio release earlier this year (ie. "Kangaroo Jack") I have to agree with the latter guy.

It's always amusing watching "conservative" places like WV pull the political correctness card.
Frankly, they should be thankful for any publicity they can get.

I just caught Wrong Turn at the theater this morning and I actually liked it. It reminded me alot of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Granted this isn't Oscar material but I still enjoyed it. Granted I enjoy 99.9% of horror movies.
Though, after seeing this I am going to reconsider my rafting trip to West Virginia later this year.

I loved it. Then again I loved B movies like this in the 70's & 80's.
It was a pure version of those films, and I do mean version because it basically is a carbon copy of a 100 films like it.
The film maintained suspense and it is well directed & shot.
People looking for character development and scenes filled with acting bravado should look elsewhere. It's perfect for what it is. Much better than the recent similiarly themed, house of 1,000 corpses, because it's not meant to remind us over and over that its a homage of a horror film, but rather, actually just be a horror film. It worked for me.
Stan winston & friends makeup may have been a little much, but that for me added to the fun of the film.
One of the more fun times I had at the cinema this year.
Grade: A-

I will see it, since I have a huge weakness for horror films. However, I never seem to learn my lesson that most horror films are rather bad. I will not say what I think now, since I have not seen the trailer and I try to avoid trailers. (I even close my eyes and stuff my ears in the theater during the trailer.)

Acceptable film with artistic value. The screenplay is technically tied together with acting, cinematography, editing, sound, special effects, visual signs, and visuals syntax making the final product a complete story. However, multiple facets that tie the film together to a complete story are flawed. Awkwardness in the story. The plot and theme are far from unique. (Acceptable film experience.) Meaning, I give the film 5/10.

one of the best and scariest horror movies I've seen in a long time! I was expecting it to suck, but I loved it. very scary... and I watch so many horror movies I hardly ever get scared by them anymore. A+++ worth seeing in the theater on the big screen, don't wait for the DVD.

I think it's spelled with a "W" now.

it was decent. My sister was scared to death and covering her eyes during half of it and screamin during the other. So that was cool and funny to see. Didn't find it scary myself but I don't get scared easily. For what it is, it's worth seeing. Just don't focus on how idiotic the characters are and how easily they could have gotten away or done something better that would have helped them out. Eliza dushku is gorgeous. Check it out, worth a viewing or two. Oh, and you will definitely see a resemblance to a classic horror film!.....

Pretty enjoyable, IMO. The story was almost undone by a few idiot plot moments.
With that out of my system, I actually thought the suspense level was fairly good, and the film was a bit gorier than you'd expect from a mainstream horror flick. The characters weren't deep, but at least they weren't the typical smart alecky teens you see in some films.
By the way, for someone who has seen this: we got to the movie late (the opening credits) and missed the pre-credits sequence. What happened?

OK, I liked this movie. It was everything the slasher genre should be (except it needs some more ‘80s gore). Sure it was a bit predictable, but what slasher movie wasn’t. Sure it had some “plot holes”, but what slasher movie doesn’t have some idiot going to the basement to “check the fuses”. I recommend this to any true horror fan: turn your brain off and enjoy.
