You know my feelings:

No Stan Winston
No Giger
No Marines

Nonesense plot ( aliens on earth, predators our god.. why the hell would they find game in hunting people they already enslaved once?)
Script from the guy who brought us SHAFT
Paul Anderson

= not a good sign, but of course I'll buy the posters.

Wow. That featurette really didn't instill any confidence in this flick. So...the movie takes place mostly in Antarctica...where they discover a pyramid...and now the predators have chinese throwing stars as weapons...

riiiiiiiiiiight..

must be great to have carte blanche to piss on TWO franchises..

Well, I guess you guys are talking about Paul W.S. Anderson. Either way, I like both Paul Thomas and Paul W.S.s work. I don't know what everyone's so worked up about with the director.. I mean, David Fincher's Alien was widely hated... and so was Jean-Pierre Jeunet's film. Both are very competent and brilliant directors (arguably). The whole idea of putting Aliens and Predators together belongs in video games and comic books anyway, not movies.

I also simply can't understand what's so bad about Paul W.S. Anderson... I mean, Event Horizon was awesome, Mortal Kombat was great - a huge surprise to everyone and completely brilliant considering the source material, and Resident Evil was kickass as well. Sure, there's Soldier, but I blame the story and Kurt Russell. It's one thing to complain about a story premise or a script that's already been written, but to completely condemn a movie that hasn't even been made yet because of who the director is is lame. At least let him start working on it before you crap on him.

Peter Jackson directed Bad Taste, which (in spite of the underground fandom it has) was a crap movie... then he goes on to direct the Lord of the Rings trilogy which is adored by many. Maybe if Paul Anderson had some good material beyond video game to movie scripts and second rate sci-fi, he'd shock the world with how good a director he is. There's nothing to base all this Anderson bashing on. Especially since the idea of an Alien vs Predator movie is kinda on par with Soldier as far as creative juices go.
I think one of the reasons for people's hate for Paul Anderson is that he is a genre director in a genre where fans are fairly passionate about their movies. Look at the vitriol directed at Schummacher for ruining Batman. If Paul Anderson was directing bad romantic commedies noone would probably care.

Also, the other directors you mentioned have redeemed themselves when they were finally given creative control and a decent budget to work with. Anderson has had both on numerous occasions and when the movie turns out to be a total pile of $h1t its hard not to blame the person who wrote and directed it.

Take Soldier for example. I recommend that everyone read the script for that movie. It was a great script. It created a bidding war because so many studios wanted the rights to it. So you have a great script, a good cast and a huge budget yet the movie is a disaster. Its not hard to see the pattern.

AvP needs a good dose of the Governor...Jesse Ventura.

They could bring his character back from the dead, right?

damn, this film has so much potential, but the featurette doesn't reinforce those beliefs for me.

They've got that going fo rthem, which is nice.

I'm only a casual fan of both franchises, and even I could tell the story made no sense. Only 5 predators become men every 1000 years?

I've only seen the first installment of both series (although I plan on getting the Quadrilogy whenever it comes out) I dunno, I thought it looked like it could be rather interesting. I very well might see it, although part of the featurette made me laugh where it probably shouldn't have "From writer/director Paul Anderson, who brought you Resident Evil......" Seems like they should have just ignored the brought you part...

I was kinda offended until I saw that you like such classic and brilliant films as The Big Hit, Cable Guy, Liar Liar, The Matchmaker, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Bad Boys, Last Action Hero and Roadhouse. With such refined tastes, I can see why you would think that Event Horizon, Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil are so terrible.
Don't be offended if someone has a different opinion than you. That's just pathetic.

If you were trying to insult me, you just insulted anyone who had the same films the ones you listed above. I don't care if you have the same tastes as me, nor do I care for your elitist attitude. If you wish to continue the bashing of people's opinions as inferior, I suggest you find a new home in some AOL chat room.

Damn, this sucks.

Alien and Predator were, for me when I first saw them, really freaky and scary. Paul Anderson tries to make big buck, completely mindless and senseless movies(Durr, Solider anyone?). AVP should be truly frightening, not this "Oh my god, Zombie around the corner!" crap.

I bet the Aliens and Predator will look entirely different, too. *sigh*

Hey, Paul Anderson is a GREAT director. A great director of mindless, turn-off-your-brain movies. His films aren't meant to be taken as anything more than that.

And that really sucks for Aliens vs. Predator. I really doubt it'll be scary or suspensful, just lame. Woop dee dah.

I gotta ask - what were you people looking for in a movie like this? Sure its been a fanboy's dream ever since Predator 2, and the comics were OK, but really? What exactly are you looking for in a movie called Aliens versus Predator?

um... whoa. Look - you picked me apart and insulted me. I was just pointing out the absurdity of your assertion that Paul Anderson movies are so terrible - stating it as a fact and never an opinion - while at the same time, you own several DVDs that are just as widely considered bad movies. To be honest, I like some of those movies I listed and I have several movies in your list... it's just that your attitude towards Paul Anderson sounds so elitist (which makes it ever so ironic that you would accuse me of being elitist) when your taste in movies is apparently not. I'm happy to admit that everyone has different opinions and that's fine with me. I never even try to claim that my opinion is the best one. I can't help it if you're ashamed of your own taste in movies and consider my posting some of your owned dvds as an insult... it wasn't my intention.

All I did in my first post which you picked apart - insulting me at the same time - was to ask why there's so much contempt for Paul Anderson. I thought Resident Evil was an outstanding film - perfect for a fan of the series of games. I loved Event Horizon and I thought Mortal Kombat was spectacular at the time - especially considering the source material. Most of the answers I've gotten are just that "such and such movie is crap" or "resident evil is shit" which doesn't really answer the question for me since I liked it. A few people have given me an appropriate answer and it's helping me understand why they don't like him, but it still doesn't explain this level of passionate hatred for the man. Asking someone to articulate their opinions isn't threadcrapping or insulting anyone. And how can I be threadcrapping if I'm one of the few people here who has anything positive to say about this film?

I went ahead and reported your post because it amounts to nothing more than a personal attack on me. I have a feeling this goes much deeper than Paul Anderson for you - like maybe you have something against me cuz I don't like Liz Phair or whatever. I like what I like and I don't pretend that I'm better than anyone else... maybe you should practice tolerance for other people's opinions. Or if you really dislike me, you can always put me on ignore... it would be a shame if it had to come to that though because I really have nothing against you or feel any ill will towards you and I'm certainly not out to dish out personal attacks on anyone regardless of what you might think about me.

How about a movie that DOESN'T involve vast hordes of the Aliens living in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica? That'd be nice.
