The Kill Bill Vol 1 Thread Part 2

Quick question:
Do you most of you who enjoyed KILL BILL, like it just because it's a "Quentin Tarantino" movie, and by that definition, you should like it, by default?
Just making sure
(Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Jackie Brown = great ; Kill Bill = just okay)

Oh, and to people who think this is the goriest, most violent film, I recommend Takeshi Miike's Ichi The Killer. Seems to me to be have been a big influence on Kill Bill.

Nobody has said Kill Bill is the "most goriest, most violent film. They said it MAY be the most violent movie ever released in mainstream America. And I couldn't disagree more on Ichi being a big influence on Kill Bill. I saw NONE of a movie like Ichi in Kill Bill. Kill Bill is a throwback to old fashioned grindhouse cinema. Ichi The Killer is a direct to video new age hyper-modern Yakuza movie. Two different types of movies IMO & I don't think Kill Bill was even slightly influenced by Ichi The Killer

We were both totally smashed, but I remember these things he told me.
The bloody killing spree at the climax of KILL BILL is a kind of re-enactment of Shogun Assassin (Kenji Misumi, 1972, Japan *Bigger image). And he also admitted to adding a dash of Ichi the Killer (Takashi Miike, 2001, Japan) in it as well.

I don't understand why there's even an argument about the whole black&white issue. In interviews, Tarantino has plainly stated that he did it to tone down the violence for American audiences. Yes, he did it of his own accord, but he still did it to make nice with the MPAA. End of story.

There was no indication that he even turned in a rough cut with it in color. In the interview he is stating that the general public isn't that keen on seeing so much blood. it's an artistic decission. the whole MPAA steams from their rules and regulations being to much like censorship. but in this case it wouldn't be that unless QT turned one in and they returned it back with a NC-17 or Change this and that to fit an R. Folks assume that it would have gotten a higher rating but there is no way to find out if it would or wouldn't. The main beef was with some comments being "Why can't the MPAA stop being pu$$ies and let QT do what he wants".. in this case he did do what he wanted, and as quotes show, he liked the B&W more.

I agree. Sure, he scripted the scene as B&W, but there is a good chance that he specifically did so because he knew ahead of time that it would be problematic, ratings-wise, to do that scene in colour. Of course, now QT says that after looking at the scene in B&W he prefers it that way, but we have to take his word for it. We can't read his mind to find out what he really thinks.

Who's to say that Tarantino didn't make the changes to make the film "go down easier" with mainstream audiences? Perhaps he believes that he will reach a broader demographic with reduced or "altered" violence? Even though I personally resent anyone second-guessing what I can or cannot tolerate in terms of cinematic sex or violence, I am level-headed enough to realize just how reactionary the general public tends to be, and I would agree with Tarantino's assessment - if that was intention. It sucks for those of us who have no problems distinguishing "fantasy" violence from "real" violence (it's a sad statement that we are in the minority).

And to respond to earlier comments, yes, Hitchcock, shot Psycho in black and white because he felt the shower scene would be too violent otherwise. As for the black and white in Kill Bill, whether you liked it or not, it was better than the scene being severely edited. Get beyond the B&W, and it's a masterpiece of timing and kinetic action.

No, although I cannot imagine anyone else being able to make this film.

Sofie is easily the hottest.
Followed by O-Ren Ishii, The Bride.
and then Gogo and Vernita.
and then Elle Driver.
and then Budd.. oh wait NO! I didn't mean that.

1)Vernita (Especially when she was in DiVA mode)
2)Sofie (Did you see her in the chapel?
)
3)O-Ren (I thought she looked best in the crime council meeting)
4)GoGo (Schooldress makes up for the nose)
5)Uma (Naturally beautiful....But ughhh..Them feet)

Good points, both. My pick is Julie Dreyfus (Sophie)

All I know is I've been whistling Twisted Nerve ever since I saw the movie.
I think the music is perfect in the film... Green Hornet, Bang Bang, all that ... the Ironside snippets. It's awesome.
As for the movie itself, it's strange. I think it would've worked better as a single movie with some serious editting but I will have to see vol 2 first.
