I'm a Japanese person at heart :) definitely in my tastes for action and violence so yes the japanese version of this film is intended for me and meant for me

And since when is director's intent the be-all-end-all? That's like saying it's a prefect film as is and you wouldn't change a thing. There's no such thing as a prefect film - not even Citizen Kane, though I'm not sure what I'd change w/ Kane to make it better better for me (though, it's already great), it's a little more obvious as to what I would change in Kill Bill. ;)

My Japanese wife always tells me that she thinks that I have more of a "Japanese mind" than a Western one, so I think I know which version of the film is right for me. :D (makes sense to me as I generally prefer Asian films to most of the watered down, boring Hollywood fare these days).

Though this whole arguement is pointless. Just because they made some compromises for the U.S. release to get as much through as possible,does not meann it is the version he wanted us to see,if he could get his way that is. Yet stupid studio politics & a uptight MPAA always threatening everything with an NC-17 prevented that.


Also the 'lip' sequence in the hospital was obviouslly cut in a jaring way. Do you think Tarantino intended the scene to be that way?

Julie: read the early draft of the script. What happens to the rapist is actually more graphic in the movie than what happened originally in the script (it was *all* offscreen--though it was a bit different, there were 3 guys.) And the shift to B&W during the yakuza scene is explicitly spelled out.

The theory that QT was forced to change stuff at the last minute by the MPAA just isn't borne out. If anything, the pressure to change things from what QT originally specified is coming from the Japanese market! Though from reading this thread, I get the impression that most people here think that adding in a bunch of extra arterial bloodsprays would improve any movie.

It's pointless to argue with him inverse, once he believes it's censorship he wont let it go even though it's been proven that this isn't the case here.

Yeah, OK, the Japanese market demanded that Tarantino deliver them a more violent version, against his wishes. Saying that isn't any better than those that say that the MPAA forced the B&W, etc :rolleyes:

C'mon, this is Tarantino's vision of an exploitation film. In the exploitation era, the more violent and bloody a film was, the better it was to exploitation audiences.

Thinking about it, I think that this deal with different versions is just one more sly nod to the films that inspired it. Different territories got different cuts of such films all the time.

It's not Bill in the script. But who knows - many things can change in the editing room.

hmm ... script was initially written for Warren Beatty ... in that case I would not have drawn that connection ... but carradine, being so non defineable (if asian or caucasian) .. may make sense ...

or the young guy is the guy who knows whats in that friggin suitcase ... :)

speaking about odd cuts .. there is one when BRIDE gets into the P*Wagon .. great music ... which is suddenly cut off .. you even see breifly some penned cut marks ... i bet that was planned too ..

what a great way to do a movie "we can f-word up everything we want and say later that it is intentional, artisitic and an homage to the crappy editors from way back then"

this "cutting the music off" happened quite often./ In that "sheriff comes to chapel" scene, it even goes along with sonn #1's hand movement ... weird

saw it last night.
Super bloody, didn't really bother me but it was kind of over the top.
I'm figuring the black and white was done in part so that they wouldn't have to show all the blood. I've heard of other movies having to do things like that to keep form being nc-17

Had to see it again, this time snuck out without the wife (she hated it :D) and tried to catch all the little things I missed since reading this thread from the beginning. I have to say the scenes in Okinawa were just friggin beautiful. Between the way Uma looked, the sets, the lighting (I noticed a few shots in the attic where Sonny was lit up like a God) and just the reverence of the moments with the swords got to me. And when "The Lonely Shepherd" cued up, it gave me goosebumps. I know a lot of people didn't like that scene, but I may have enjoyed it more that the action ones.
