budd is michael madsen. we don't see her anywhere near him in the first volume. chronologically, she kills liu first, then fox.

First off, why in the hell does QT show "The Bride" crossing off the second person's name from the list when it reveals the outcome of the "first fight"?
Chronologically, it's the second fight, she found O-Ren Ishii first ("She was the first on my list, and easiest to find.") and got the info on the other DiVAS from Sofie Fatale ("You're going to give me information...")

The audience is then fully aware that "The Bride" survives chapter five.
Yup, it's like one big flashback but isn't really. Somehow some people didn't catch that thing about O-Ren but ah well.

And number two, why would Budd be third on the list and in neither of the scenes where a name is crossed off the list is his name not marked off since he (Budd) is the second person "The Bride" kills?
You're thinking Buck, whose here to ****, not Budd. Budd is only shown in a few short scenes and only speaks one real line "That woman deserves her revenge, and we deserve to die." at the end of the movie. And if you're not thinking Buck, I have no idea what you're talking about, since Budd is still alive come the end of Volume I.

I have only seen three (3) of QT's movies, and its safe to say that while this was much better than "Jackie Brown", it in no way approaches "Pulp Fiction."
It's a really different movie than Pulp Fiction, kind of like comparing apples and oranges but to each their own.

I'm personally a big fan of this movie, one of the most entertaining escapist action flicks I've seen. Also I thought the acting in it was quite good - mind you, physically speaking - the speech is quite stoic throughout but these people are "warriors" and have to speak hard and stern. There's a lot of eye emotion through the movie (Vernita Green vs. The Bride, the apology between O-Ren and The Bride, The Bride contemplaying during the fight scenes on what she can and is supposed to be doing, etc; ), but I guess I'm reading into it a bit much.

This is the style. It's not important that you know whether or not she survives; what's important is how it happens. Many stories are about the journey, not the outcome. Besides, did you honestly think for half a second that she wouldn't survive the first fight?
• Quoth Big Boy Laroux •
i didn't know that blood could shoot out of the body like it was being shot out of a fire hose...

Um ... the goal here wasn't to depict realistic violence, but rather a love letter to an unrealistic and extravagant genre.

The audience should be fully aware of this before they even walk into the theater considering that it's Volume 1.

Like I said earlier, if you didn't like this...don't see Pulp Fiction, which does this same thing only in reverse. A character is killed off, and later features in another segment that takes place earlier chronologically.

I stand corrected on the Budd/Buck thing.

I understand that it was the second fight, thats why I said it reveals the outcome of the first, that outcome being Ishii's death.

And like I said before the list thing was something that really just bugged me because if one pay attentions they lose the "reward."

I simply listed the QT movies I had seen in the order in which I like them; PF, KB, and then JB (I wasnt trying to compare them).

Not to mention that this is Vol 1 (of 2) of a revenage film. Do you honestly think the bride wouldn't survive the battles?

It doesn't matter that we know she survives the first battle. It's QT's editing style and it has worked well in the past, as well as in this one.

I'm confused. What is the "reward" of which you speak? As for paying attention, there was nothing subtle about her list. If you picked up on the fact that Uma Thurman was trying to kill people, you picked up on the sequencing of her list.

To be fair, your post appeared while I was still typing my reply. In many ways, it's a spoiler for my post...even though it appears first, chronologically mine should be first!!!

Hopefully no one pay attentions, else they'll lose the reward.

I find the black and white text to be distracting. I think they changed it to appease the MPAA.

Okay, the more I think about it the more I liked this movie.

My favorite part of the film was the Okinawa sequence w/ Sonny Chiba. I have not seen hardly any of the films that QT drew upon for inspiration, but I did know who Sonny Chiba was. I thought he was fantastic and I really enjoyed his character and this whole portion of the movie. The back and forth dialogue at the bar between him, the Bride and his son was great.

I didn't mind the anime story-telling of O'Ren's past (I have no opinion of anime one way or the other since I haven't seen more than a few films w/ it). It didn't take me out of the pic and I thought it was kind of interesting.

I liked the Black and White sequence at the House of the Blue Leaves. I liked how he introduced it and ended it. I don't understand all of the bitching about it. It was a great fight, and I thought Uma was superb, as she was throughout the film (She had a slew of great one liners). I really enjoyed the fight scene in silhouette. I loved it when she knocked out the lights - I thought it looked great. Then the spanking had me . The ensuing fight w/ O'Ren in the snowy garden was great looking, too.

I liked the fight at the beginning w/ Vivica's character, but I really hope that they add more back-story for her in the next volume. Besides the fact that it set up the merciless revenge for the movie, it just seemed some-what pointless.

The soundtrack was one of the things that made this movie for me. That was the only thing about it that my dad liked - he thought it was just too over-the-top, as did my brother-in-law. He knew it was going to be an homage to the genres that QT loved, but he said it was too cheesy, and that QT's movies already had that cheesy, B-movie quality to them, but he simply went overboard w/ this one, particularly w/ the fountains of blood. My dad didn't care for it, and my brother-in-law thought it was okay - he said that until she arrived in Okinawa he really didn't care for it.

I was grimacing when she was slamming the door on Buck's head. Ouch!!!

Daryl Hannah as Elle Driver was quite funny. I really enjoyed her whistling in the hallway - great touch.

I loved Julie Dreyfus - what a beautiful woman - hopefully we may get a little more in the next movie - like what Bill does w/ her. Something, anything would be a blessing.

The lady who played GoGo did nothing for me. Her character was cool in sick and twisted way, but the actress was f'ugly. Sorry, but she was.

Liked Lucy Liu's look in the flashbacks w/ the shorter hair. The best she has ever looked.

I loved how they ended it w/ Bill's comments to Sofie and I can't wait for the next one.

(I can't believe Uma did this just a few months after having a child - very impressive and it makes you appreciate her best role yet even more.)

The only thing wrong w/ this film was that it wasn't shot in New Zealand.

Chiaki Kuriyama (Gogo (KB), Chigusa (BR)) is cute, but yeah has a huge nose.

That all said, she get's ****ing memorable roles, I've seen her in two movies, in supporting roles, and she's made a huge impact.

(She had the most memorable fight from Kill Bill, as well as that "Do you want to screw me?" sequence.. in Battle Royale she pulled off perhaps the most painful murder in recent movie history.)

That's one of the few things that bothered me. Given the intensity of the door slamming, when they cut to the shot where The Bride leans over his body to peek out the hall, the guy's head looked fine, no blood or anything. Wouldn't his skull have been crushed with blood and brain matter all over???

For that matter, during the whole time she's sitting there willing her toes to move, why hasn't someone found the orderly's body and called the cops? And wouldn't the cops have then tracked down the ***** Wagon in the garage? I mean, they had *13 hours*, for crying out loud.

But of course you're not supposed to mention stuff like that because it's, y'know, an homage to the crappy plotting of exploitation movies. And calling it "an homage" makes it art!

She could've dragged the bodies into the corner of the room and since it's the coma ward I doubt many people check on them (thus being able to let people bang away freely).

I'm sure Buck has things worked out where he has a large amount of autonomy in that section such that he isn't disturbed. Considering she had no real connections to the world (no one checking up on her) AND she was shot in the head AND in a coma, chances are she had the absolute lowest possible care imaginable in that situation.
