Come on man. That is an obvious reference to PF. Uma is Mia Wallace. Marcellus Wallace threw the fat Samoan dude off the balcony for giving his wife, none other than, a foot massage.

What's the name of the song that's on the trailer with the cool guitar riffs and that's played when Lucy Liu and her posse are walking into the House of Blue Leaves...

Speaking of songs, what is the name of the song that plays when Uma calls O-Ren down in the House of Blues Leaves. It's a percussion based asian song, with some sort of chanting or something. It is also the second song on the bootleg trailer found on the CD. Anyone?

Exciting flick ...

Observations:

Lucy Liu = Totally Not Believable In Her Role (referring specifically to her showdown with Uma)!!!

Her sourpuss bodyguard (GOGO) was the REAL DEAL though! She should have had Lucy's part!

Uma = Really Incredible. Towered Over Lucy. Too thin, though. Eat darlin', eat!

I think that might be "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" - Santa Esmeralda or "The Lonely Shepherd" - Zamfir which has that chanting or something

did anyone think this: in the scene where liu yells in english to the "committee"...it reminded me of the beginning of pulp fiction ("if any of you ****in pricks move...."), the way they both yell it...i know it wasn't done intentionally, but that is what I noticed.

Also, the whole uma saying "that would be just about square" and drawing the square was just like in pulp fiction....i know tarantino wouldn't be so pretentious as to pay homage to himself, but that was pretty dope.

You know, the one thing that I was teed about was O-Ren putting her sword back in the scabbard with blood still on it after the Yakuza meeting. That just doesn't happen. There is too much respect for the sword to leave it dirty.

And I'm pretty much sick of people slamming this movie - it was a Tarantino Self Indulgent Homage to the extreme, and if you didn't think it was going to be, then you shouldn't have gone to see it. I heard a bunch of people bitching on the way out that it was dumb and boring...and I'm thinking "these people just don't understand..." And that's pretty much the extent of it - people didn't understand Pulp Fiction, and people will definitely not understand this. Hell, I don't think people understand the point of 75% of the movies out there.

And this isn't to sound elitist or anything, but it's more truth than a lot of people will admit. I know there are people who go into films thinking it's going to be a life changing experience and an oscar performance every time. There's others that simply think every movie sucks except one specific one they saw in 1976 that was good and that's that.

Anyways...sorry for the tangent

I love Tarantino's work. I've seen all his movies countless times and was very excited to finally see "Kill Bill" today. Boy, was I disappointed. To me, the beauty of Tarantino's earlier films was that he had a real inate sense of what was really cool. With "Kill Bill", I sensed that he's been on his Gen-X, Orson Welles pedestal for so long that he feels his ideas are inherently cool. When a director buys his own hype, he faces the real possibility of the dreaded Lucas/prequel syndrome. I'm afraid Tarantino has succumbed. I'm also certain that, just as certain Star Wars fans will slavishly defend the shortcomings of the prequels, many Tarantino fans will defend "Kill Bill" because they really want it to be good. Ultimately, I felt "Kill Bill" was two hours of empty mayhem, a pornographic film with violence replacing sex.

No disrespect to those who loved it, I wish I could count myself among you.

"Death Rides A Horse" by Ennio Morricone.

Lee Van Cleef spaghetti western that also has a character who's on a "bloody rampage of revenge"

The lyrics being said (In somewhat broken english) are:

"He'll be coming down the mountain
He'll be driving all his hatred

Who'll be the first to test his gun?
Who'll be the last to see the ground?
"

What do you mean Turd?? QT is using a lot of classic martial arts films mixing it all into one. As the poster above stated, if you were going into this expecting anything more then QT giving his best homage to what films he loves, then you were expecting to much.

You might also miss a lot of what is in there. I'm sure most folks missed the whole purpose and reasons behind the blade she used and who crafted it, not to mention the way things occured.

I'll still stand by the whole point that the gushing blood was mainly in the Japan segment for the reason that he is narrowing down the enemies and the characters. As someone pointed out, the over the top blood gushing as well as the look, style and feel of the whole scenes were there as a homage to the films he loved.

He isn't bringing anything new to the table. The film was a big homage and it worked out great if you ask me. I can see why those who might not know any of the films it is taking things from might have a problem relating. I suppose you might need the source or atleast some idea about where the idea's, look and style came from to better understand and enjoy it. Oh well.

I may well feel differently after I see Part II, and the whole experience sinks in a while. I will say that the mass ass-whipping in the restaurant was beautifully filmed.

Oh yeah....I'd tap GoGo like a cold keg.

I haven't read through this thread yet due to its enormous size (I will after I post this), but I saw the movie today.

All I can say is that it was AWESOME. Seriously.

I'm not much of a Tarantino fan because the only movie I saw of his was Pulp Fiction (liked it), and I only saw it a year or two ago. I've never seen Reservoir Dogs, or Jackie Brown.

Now that that's out of the way, I have to say that this movie is very beautifully shot. Every scene was like a fine-crafted piece of art and I was in awe as I sat in my movie seat staring at the screen.

The story was really good and I loved the action sequences. The music was totally appropriate and it was really good.

I totally loved Lucy Liu's character and loved the fighting sequence in the restaurant. Those anti-piracy dots were a bit distracting in the restaurant scenes, though. Also, the lights-out scene was sort of distracting because it was more obvious that there was a stunt double playing Uma.

Sonny Chiba was excellent and the Okinawan bar scene was quite funny.

One of my friends commented on how extraordinarily ugly Uma Thurman was so I had to laugh and say that it didn't help that she wasn't wearing any makeup.

Gauging the audience's reaction to the movie, I would guess that the movie was pretty well received. I cannot say enough how good this movie was....for once, I'm amazed more at the cinematography than the actual story....and the story was damn good!

If I read a book by an author who I've never read before and like the book, I try to make sure to read some of his/her other work. I think I'm going to have to do the same with Tarantino's movies. Mr. Tarantino now has a new fan.

Edited to change From Dusk 'Til Dawn to Jackie Brown because I thought he directed FDTD. See, I told you I wasn't a fan prior to seeing this movie!

Still no one has been able to answer this question:

why did the Bride follow Sofie Fatale on her bike for a little while, look in the window, and then just take-off? I thought she was following her to find Lucy Liu.

Another point: for the most part the dialogue was very good, but it was really bad in the Vivica Fox scene. It was Tarantino-esque to a fault. Was he trying to parody his other movies? every other word was bitch and something like:
"i wish i didnt, but i did."
"i wish i wasnt, but i am."
"i wish i could, but i cant."
TOO Tarantino for me. But like I said, all the other dialogue was good. anyone else feel this way?

Of course, this movie has some plot holes and lapses of logic (thats to be expected with a film like this and I have no problem with it) but there was one that stuck out to me:
Spoiler:
After Uma's character kills the hospital orderly and would be rapist, she hides out in the "P***y Wagon" (presumably in the hospital parking lot) until she can get the feeling back in her legs. According to a subtitle that takes 13 hours. In all that time, you would think that the bodies would be discovered, and police would be searching the whole place including the parking lot.
That was the only one that struck a false chord with me but I can deal with it.
I noticed that, too, but I just disregarded it. I was like, "okay, that's fake, but so what, this movie rocks!"

I don't know how you could notice that and not notice
Spoiler:
Uma Thurman bringing her samurai sword onto the plane. In fact, in one scene there are two samurai swords clearly visible
. I dont' care, though, I loved the movie.

No, you're wrong. He was wearing underwear. When they showed the shot from behind, you could clearly see he was wearing some type of white/off-white cloth over his crotch.

I honestly can't pick out why it didn't seem to groove with me. The music was the only thing that stood out as being really good. I thought the different styles of the movie were used not to be different and unique.....bit instead used as a way to get away with a mass amount of blood splattering without giving the ratings board a heart attack. I don't care for Anime and the only time I've really wanted to see it was the Animatrix shorts.

I probably would of been curious about this movie for some time and if I hadn't watched it I most likely would of caved later on down the road and bought the DVD releases. I've now satisfied that little bit of curiosity and saved myself the cost of the DVDs.

I almost fear giving a negative review but I think I wrote enough to back up my reasons. I don't mind negative responses in movie threads as long and it says more than "this movie sucks". That's when I get ticked off.
You didn't love it because you didn't want to fork over the $$$ for the cost of the movie ticket.

I saw it in Pasadena. When Uma's character shows up in the front of Vivica Fox's house and the screen says something like : THE CITY OF PASADENA, CA. The audience went nuts. It was a rowdy audience, I loved it.

Just got back. Greatest movie I've ever seen! The *ONLY* other movie that trumps it is...

Spoiler:
Barry Lyndon

Questions...

Wasn't Sofie Fatale played by Monica Belluci? Why wasn't she credited in the movie?

What happened to the alledged cameo from Samuel L Jackson? Edited out?

Who's character did Gordon Lui play? I don't remember seeing him in the film at all.

You can thank The RZA(from former rap group The Wu-tang Clan) for that. He did the score.

Just ordered my first GOGO poster off ebay

Monica Bellucci wasn't credited because she isn't Sofie Fatale. Julie Dreyfus is.

No idea; I hadn't heard that. Maybe he'll be in Volume 2.

Gordon Liu was Johnny Mo. The bald guy with the "Kato mask".

So is there any chance McFarlane or any company will make some actions figures for this movie?

Oh yeah, I have one other small nitpick.

Obviously, Uma Thurman worked to learn how to speak Japanese properly. That's cool. But she, like most non-speaking Japanese people, mispronounced Yakuza. She pronounced it the same way most non-speaking Japanese people pronounce it: yuh KOO zuh. The correct pronunciation is YAH koo ZAH. I doubt her Japanese teachers taught her the correct pronunciation since they were probably working with her speak the entire Japanese sentences/phrases she had to do. Whenever she said "Yakuza", she was speaking in English sentences, so the Japanese teachers probably never even looked at those lines.

I can't remember for sure if Lucy Liu had to say "Yakuza", but if she did, she didn't pronounce it right, either.

Oh yeah, one other thing: they didn't say "samurai" like how Japanese-speaking people say it, either.

Yes, I speak Japanese so don't ask.
