Did anybody else get fooled by Sophie's cell phone being in the audience?

Best film of the year, no doubt.

Can anyone recommend some good movies that obviously inspired this movie. I've never watched any of the old Asian films and would like to catch up on it before Vol.2 thanks.

BTW the movie was incredible, but my two favorite aspects were the music and locations. The songs were great along with the House of Blue Leaves and the last fight outside.

Yeah, as much as I watched Kung Fu movies when I was a kid I'm sure I didn't get most of the indie references. If someone who is more knowledgeable about grindhouse films could point some out that'd be a lot of fun.

I thought it was wonderful - perfectly in style as a bad-ass kung fu revenge picture. It wasn't nearly as violent as I thought it would be, mostly because the people being killed were hardly people - just video game villians. The blood shooting out as if from a lawn sprinkler wasn't at all realistic (it would pump out in bursts - squirt squirt squirt rather than squiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirt) and
Spoiler:

Anyone losing a limb from a sword cut would pass out immediately from their blood pressure dropping and then quickly bleed to death if they didn't receive immediate medical attention

Great popcorn movie, and a big loud over the top return for Tarantino, who proves once and for all that he's not a flash-in-the-pan or shot-his-wad director. He's one of the greats, and hopefully it won't be six years after Vol. 2 for his next film.

Saw this today. It was a good movie, but not great. Some parts of the movie seemed forced and the B&W scenes were obviously done for rating (no "artistic" quality to them). Did anyone else think that the blood looked a little too much like water at some points? It was a fun film and I will leave final judgement until after I see part two.

Ah yes, I hated the black and white scene. I found it really distracting, and as soon as it turned to B&W I was taken immediately out of the movie. There are many parts of the trailer that are in colour and look great, but they look like shit in the too-high-contrast black and white.

We're already on the case.

I've thought of a few more that I'll add to that thread later.

I'm in the minority then...

I wasn't that big of a fan after the first viewing. My main problem with the movie is that A LOT of the editing, cinematography, and photography just seems sloppy and not thought out at all, or worse (as in the overheard kitchen scene), there for no reason at all. Kill Bill seems more like QT's first movie and then he matures into his other work.

Don't get me wrong, I had fun, but technically it seemed very sloppy, and I don't think it was intentional. What I did like was the bleeding/clipping in a lot of the audio, made the movie seem like an old VHS tape on DTS...

Bottom line: Not the best movie of the year, not worth waiting for six years, but damn good.

Wow. Wowie, wow, wow. So I bought my ticket and decided to pop into another screening of the film that had already started. Man, did I pick the worst time to walk in. Right as I saw the screen, the side story of GoGo was on and I was privy to no less than 2 gallons of blood spilling out of a rather ugly Japanese man. Oh, I flinched, I flinched big time. When I got into my screening, I honestly thought I'd throw up because both the anticipation and the expectation of all the gore were really getting to me.

LOVED THIS MOVIE! Strangely, after seeing the gutted Japanese guy, the rest of the movie felt very violent, but not overly gory. The fight scenes were amazing, the music was great, and the dialogue was spot on. The only disturbing thing to me was the anime sequence...that disturbed me to no end, as I like the fluffy kind of anime, not the Akira, Princess Mononoke sort. I really wish that the black and white part had been left color...the scene when she runs up the stairwell, as seen in the trailer went to show that that scene would have looked bad-ass in full on Tarantino Color. Oh well, looks like I'll just pick up the Japanese DVD or wait for an unrated version. Overall, a rocking Kung Fu flick with a whole mess of Tarantino. A big freakin' misshapen toe up. Ugh...those feet...

Overall loved it, wished there wasn't black and white but it wasn't enough to bother me too much. Action was great, stylish, and overall a very entertaining film.

A few minor quibbles with some musical cues
1. The use of the "Nobody But Me" intro as Uma climbs the stairs was rather limp.
2. There should have been no music thoughout the entire Snow sequence. It broke the mood.

But these are just nitpicks- good flick

why the hell would you jump into the Middle of a film you were about to watch before you watched it? makes no sense to me. Do the logical thing and theater hop to another film. 2 for 1.

I honestly wanted to see what I was getting myself into. After hearing descriptions of the gore, I wasn't sure if it was for me or not. Oh, and are you honestly suggesting stealing? I'm up for that...maybe next time I go see Kill Bill...and I will see it again.

The biggest problem I had with the B&W segment is that the same footage appears in the DVD teaser (the spinning axe, etc.) and it looks so damn lovely in those shots... now it's kinda dull. Regradless, I loved this movie. I thought the split was perfect. In fact, I can't imagine it without this cliffhanger... after all that intense action we need a breather! I didn't find the anime distracting, as it was telling part of the story that would've been otherwise too disturbing for the tone of this movie. Great stuff.

for those wanting more of the classic QT dialogue, he says vol 2 will have more dialogue, exposition, and less action.

i thought it was great. since most of the good stuff has been mentioned, I'll add some nitpicks, bc that's what the internet is for:

1. i didnt like the big fight changing to b/w. QT said it would be cool for the blood to look like oil, but for some reason it didnt look black. it just looked like water. seems to be for ratings reasons. the entire movie is based on rich, vivid colors.

2. the anime sequence went too long. adding to that point, why was there so much exposition on Liu's character, but none on Vivica Fox.

3. there was almost no point I could see to Vernita Green. she wasnt interesting, no history, and every other word they said during their conversatoin was 'bitch'. that part was very annoying.

Questions:
Spoiler:

1. why did Uma follow Sofie Fatale, look in the window, and then shoot ahead? I thought she was following the car to find Ishii.

2. how did Uma know about the swordmaker? She musta learned about him from Bill. He was playing with a sword. i hope we learn about this and why Hanzo hates Bill in vol 2.

The acting was all great, except for Vivica Fox. Excuse my dislike for her in this movie. I think i would have liked her part more if she had some exposition like Lucy Liu.

Who knew pretty, skinny Uma Thurman could kick so much ass?

Great parts:
the whole part with Sonny Chiba.

all the fight scenes, every table, piece of glass, everything that could be destroyed was. great, loud sound fx.

the flashbacks when the Bride saw her enemies (sp), and they played that synth music, and she got pissed off.

the twist at the end.

cya in February.

stealing means you take something that isn't yours. Your time is all yours my friend and if you so happen to waste it sitting in a theater that you weren't suppose to instead of sitting on the bench outside waiting for the film.. then that's your choice

but considering you saw the film 1 and a half times when you only paid to see it once, you might as well call a peach a peach.

either way, You don't walk into the film you are about to watch half way through it. sheesh.

I just don't care to hear anything negative about this film, it was absolutely amazing... QT really did outdo himself here. I can't think of a better film in the past couple of years, except for maybe Gangs of New York. Tarantino is on the shortlist of GREAT directors (and writers) and he knows it. Spectacular...

I thought the movie was absolutely fantastic! I'm a huge Tarantino fan and had high expectations which were easily surpassed.

The only issue I had with B&W switch was that I think it could have looked better. I didn't think the shift itself detracted from the scene.

I've heard complaints about the big battle draggin on too long, but felt just the opposite; there was an organic progression and logical escalation in the action, IMO.

All in all, a great return from Tarantino.

My thoughts exactly. I loved the movie but didn't like a lot of the music he used. Some kind of got on my nerves. It actually ruined it a little for me. Besides that I loved the flick. I actually liked the b&w scene and loved the anime (I'm a big anime fan though). The action scenes were pretty good. I wouldn't call the fight scenes "amazing" or "best ever" by any means though. I think you guys are overhyping it, but it is a great flick.

Saw it with my wife last night and we both absolutely loved it.

Uma Thurman's best movie. She did a very good job. Lucy Liu was captivating (as usual ).

We will definitely be going to see it again. Lots of nuances and small stuff to pick up.

Great movie and a great return for Tarantino. February won't come soon enough.

I must say i expected this movie to rock but OH MY GOD!! Quentin's the man...for the first time ever i experienced an applause from most of the audience when the movie was over. Wish i could watch it again right then and there. I think the music totally made this masterpiece(never thought i'd hear Zamphir in this flick..or any flick) Too bad we must wait till Feb.

I thought the movie was pretty good. I'm a big fan of martial arts movies but I have a problem with this movie. QT has said he wants to make this movie because he loves the old classics and he doesn't care about making money. They why use Uma thurman, Lucy Liu etc. The Asian movies of the past didn't have much story, had bad acting, cheesy music, tiny budgets etc, but what the great movies had was great martial artists who looked great on screen. QT tried to take the basic elements of those movies but forgot about the great fighters for the main parts. Good to see Gordon Liu and Sonny Chiba on screen though.

I must say...this movie KICKED ARSE!!!! However, that is my opinion, and I could tell from the packed audience's reaction that many were not expecting what they got. Despite the previews and numerical represenation at the beginning, I doubt it was communicated well that it was one of two movies.
Also, if you weren't a film geek/kung-fu movie aficionado, it was hard to fully enjoy the movie. True, the audience did applaud at times, but it was strained as many clearly didn't think much of it. In all honesty, this is the kind of movie that I wish I had seen in a near empty theater with people who were real fans as opposed to those looking for something "cool."
