Re: Alien 5 - News, rumors, etc.
A little over a month ago, District 9 and Elysium director Neill Blomkamp showed off some insanely cool concept art he made for a new Alien movie. It’s great stuff that’s exciting to consider, but it was unofficial material so that left us wondering, did he just do all of it for fun or was there ever a time when he was in the running to direct a new installment of the franchise? While out promoting his third feature, Chappie, I got the opportunity to get a little more clarification on the situation. Check out what Blomkamp told me when I asked him why he made that concept art to begin with: “There was a reason. I wanted to make that film. I still may make that film. [Laughs] It may happen. But I did it on my own time. Like when Chappie was winding down in post and I had available time, I started to work on it. It was also from talking to Sigourney [Weaver] during the making of this. I mean, I asked her about Alien all the time. Alien and Aliens are my favorite films. So I genuinely wanted to make that film, I came up with the story, I came up with way more art than I put out and I never officially spoke to Fox about it, but Fox wanted to make it. So, I kind of touched on it and I didn’t know what to do, and I didn’t know if I was just gonna go leave directing for a whole bunch of time and then I was like, ‘I might as well put some art out.’ But I may make it. I don’t know. That’s where it stands.” There you have it. Blomkamp really could wind bringing the concept art to screen in his very own Alien movie. Clearly nothing is official, but Blomkamp is certainly very interested and it seems as though the studio may be as well, and even at this very early, uncertain stage, I’m already immensely more excited for it than the Prometheus sequel. |

No. Just no.

Re: Alien 5 - News, rumors, etc.
Literally cannot be worse than AvP, AvP:R, or Prometheus.

Re: Alien 5 - News, rumors, etc.
I feel like a rectal exam from a Xenomorph couldn't be worse than those movies.

Re: Alien 5 - News, rumors, etc.
AVP is actually pretty entertaining, despite some missed opportunities. However, AVP:R is a master class in how not to make a movie.
|
Though I was on the Anderson-hating bandwagon in my even more pretentious years, I've come around to AVP. It's still no masterpiece and doesn't live up to its potential, but it's a decent monster mash flick. AVP-R, however, is terrible in ways I did know a film could be terrible.

I thought District 9 was a masterpiece especially how the aliens looked. I think Blomkamp's vision should be seen.

Re: Alien 5 - News, rumors, etc.
I always found District 9 to be grossly overrated. I do appreciate the effects work achieved on what is a relatively miniscule budget. However, although the premise is a good one, the execution was poor. The actual movie lacks focus (is it found footage or a conventional movie?), the narrative doesn't hold up to any critical thought (even without their weapons, that only answer to them, the aliens can kill a human with a single blow one minute and then are easily killed by knife wielding humans the next), and it finally just devolves into a third person shooter at the end.
That said, I liked the sketches for an Alien sequel and wouldn't mind seeing him take a stab at it. Besides, as previously stated, it can't be anywhere near as bad as AVP:R or its prettier-yet-equally-stupid sister, Prometheus. |

New ‘Alien’ Movie Confirmed at Fox with Director Neill Blomkamp February 18, 2015 | 04:32PM PT Justin Kroll 20th Century Fox has closed a deal with director Neill Blomkamp to develop a new “Alien” movie, sources confirm. The “District 9″ filmmaker had been teasing the project on social media in recent months. “So I think this is officially my next film,” he confirmed on Instagram late Wednesday. |
Re: Alien 5 - News, rumors, etc.
I just watched Elysium the other night. It was pretty terrible. Unless Chappie is a hit, letting this guy make an Alien film is a bad idea.

Re: Alien 5 - News, rumors, etc.
I'm looking forward to Blomkamp's Alien rendition.

"So I think I'm officially bowing out of his franchise." confirmed Trespoochies Wednesday afternoon after reading this latest news.

Re: Alien 5 - News, rumors, etc.
As much as I loathed Elysium, I'd so much rather see what Blomkamp can do with this franchise than almost any other overnight sensation small-time director suddenly handed $200mm.
Neill, don't fuck this up. |
Re: Alien 5 - News, rumors, etc.
How much worse can it get? The last film had a queen get Amtraked by this thing.

Re: Alien 5 - News, rumors, etc.
Nice. I trust Blomkamp.
D9 was solid. Elysium had some shakey script elements. And I dunno about Chappie yet. But Blomkamp is good. |
Re: Alien 5 - News, rumors, etc.
ii loved D9 and Elysium wasn't half bad in my mind. ready for this and all it has to offer!!
|
Re: Alien 5 - News, rumors, etc.
Elysium was really bad, but mainly because the script was discarded in favor of heavy handed social commentary (unlike District 9, which weaved the social commentary into the script). I would hope that in an Alien film, the social commentary element would be secondary.
|
Re: Alien 5 - News, rumors, etc.
Not sure how much social commentary could be put into an Alien film now.
|
Re: Alien 5 - News, rumors, etc.
I still haven't seen Elysium. Disliked District 9 quite a bit. Not too optimistic about this.

Re: Alien 5 - News, rumors, etc.
It’s unclear whether Weaver is still attached to the movie. According to insiders, the new “Alien” takes place years after the “Prometheus” sequel. Scott is producing both films through his production company Scott Free. |
Re: Alien 5 - News, rumors, etc.
Oh, right... we're still in that universe...
|
Re: Alien 5 - News, rumors, etc.
no more Sigourney Weaver. It's time to move on.

Can't find the article where she stated that Ripley should be better off in peace. |
Re: Alien 5 - News, rumors, etc.
Hopefully this ignores every last bit of Prometheus.
|
Re: Alien 5 - News, rumors, etc.
Great news! I'll be disappointed though if this is Prometheus 3 instead of an Alien 5 w Weaver though. We have to be guarded as this is apparently still a Scott Free production, and not Neil being given free reign to make an Aliens sequel.

LOL, Thought "Scott Free" meant no involvement from Ridley. Oh well.
I wish they'd just do a reboot. Forget Weaver. Forget Prometheus. |

Re: Alien 5 - News, rumors, etc.
So this sequel to the sequels of the original happens after the sequel to the prequel to the original. That actually makes sense ... Although I don't know why it needed to be said.
I'm neutral on Blompkamp. Enjoyed District 9 despite its uneven tonal shifts but didn't think Elysium looked interesting. I have stronger feelings about Weaver: Sorry, but Ripley out is a much better sign than Ripley in. |

Re: Alien 5 - News, rumors, etc.
I agree, there's no need to reboot when you can just make a movie that doesn't involve pre-existing human characters.

I don't know how Prometheus 2 can be good. They're still talking about the religious stuff.
