Re: Alien 5 (D: Blomkamp) S: Weaver
MAY 01, 2017 1:12pm PT by Graeme McMillan Ridley Scott Says Neill Blomkamp's 'Alien' Project Is Dead "Fox decided that they didn't want to do it, and that was it," says the 'Alien: Covenant' director. For those waiting patiently for updates on Neill Blomkamp's Alien movie, there's some good news and some bad news. The good news is, an update seems to have arrived. The bad news is, the update seems to be that the pic is dead. Talking to French outlet Allocine, Alien: Covenant director Ridley Scott quite coldly revealed that the project was likely defunct when asked about its status. "There was never a script," he said. "It was an idea that evolved from, I believe, a 10-page pitch, and I was meant to be part of the producers on that. It didn’t evolve. Fox decided that they didn’t want to do it and that was it. I’d already done Prometheus and I was planning Covenant, so I dunno." Asked if the movie is ever likely to happen, Scott said, "I don't think so, no." The potential project originally made its debut on social media in early 2015, before the reaction to concept art posted by Blomkamp led to Fox's involvement. Blomkamp talked often about the project at the time, explaining that it would ignore Alien3 and Alien: Resurrection, and that Scott liked his proposed title. After that initial flurry of activity, however, Blomkamp went silent on the subject, potentially reflecting Fox's own cooling on the matter. Alien: Covenant, Scott's own latest expansion of the franchise, hits theaters May 19. |
Re: Alien 5 (D: Blomkamp) S: Weaver
I know there's so many folks that hate Ridley's latest and wanted to see this, but i'm on the opposite where I haven't cared for Blomkamp so i'm ok with this.

Re: Alien 5 (D: Blomkamp) S: Weaver
I don't really care either. I'm actually glad Blomkamp isn't going to make it. It's Ridley's ship, let him crash it if he wants.

Re: Alien 5 (D: Blomkamp) S: Weaver
So ... Ridley felt threatened (by a hack according to many of you) and torpedoed the project of an artist who (seemingly) had a passion for the project. Not that it would take much to show up Prometheus.
Let me ask this ... If Covenant is a flop, what does that mean for the franchise? In an era when studios are banging the franchise drum vehemently, would they give Ridley the boot and let some other visions come to fruition? Would they even care if it is critically trashed but turns a profit? To be honest, I am not sure I will go see this in theaters. I am a huge fan of the franchise, but Ridley's BS has really put me off. |

I'd rather see Ford hang it up as Indiana Jones, and Weaver leave the Ripley role alone. If Covenant doesn't do well, hopefully they'll just leave the series alone. We got 3 good movies. |

Alien 3 & 4 are a long nightmare Ripley had while in cryo... That would work for me. Having Newt and Hicks die, pointlessly, in between 2 & 3 just makes ALIENS itself pointless. So I've always considered 3 & 4 to be a nightmare that Ripley is having. |
Re: Alien 5 (D: Blomkamp) S: Weaver
I was looking forward to Blomkamp's rendition. What a damn shame. -ohbfrank-

RUNNING FROM ALIENS, SAVE ME HICKS!", fantasy horseshit. Pointless for someone wanting to see Hicks telling bedtime stories to Newt. Seeing Ripley deal with everything being taken from her and giving a final "fuck you" to the company, is better than Hicks playing Daddy. Door nails! Resurrection... whatever.... |
Re: Alien 5 (D: Blomkamp) S: Weaver
What I've always loved about the Alien movies is the near absolute pessimism of the universe they exist in.
One movie ends with forming and saving a nuclear family. The very next movie destroys that family in the opening scene. And at the end of that movie, they kill off the franchise heroine. Also, that movie is set in a prison. And everyone shaves their head because of the lice. I'm okay without the warm and fuzzy fan service of letting Newt and Hicks survive. |

Door nails! Resurrection... whatever.... Fincher's film may not be better than the first two, but to me that's where it all ends. Anything that came after is just silliness. |

To each their own I guess, but I find the deaths of Hicks and Newt at the beginning of Alien 3 to be extremely effective and a key to the nihilistic catharsis of Alien 3 that completes the thematic arc of the three films. It obviously offends some people's sensibilities, but I would argue that means it had the intended effect. The seemingly empty deaths of these people with whom Ripley had a real emotional connection, the relentless plague of destruction harvested by the Aliens, and the unwavering, foolish ambition of the company all drive Ripley to her final act of spiteful and hopeless resignation.
 Hell, I even like Resurrection. It was like Firefly in the Alien universe. |

^ Why So Blu,
http://media.giphy.com/media/TzkhpPKwOorKg/giphy.gif I'll split it with you (although we know this isn't going to happen) ... Blomkamp never gets to make an Alien film if Ridley Scott never gets to make another one either. I'm listening to the Now Playing Podcast: Alien Retrospective. I need to go back and listen to the commentaries on the BluRay, but hearing about some of the cockamamie shit Ridley wanted to do ... well, let's say I believe Alien was a success in spite of Ridley Scott, not due to Ridley Scott. |
