I'm all for 3 & 4 being bad dreams. Can anyone think of a sequel that used this ploy before? Someone mentioned "Die Hard 3" ignored 2, but 3 never actually called 2 a dream.
The only example I can think of is actually a TV show, "Dallas," and the dream idea pretty much killed this popular show. Its ratings dipped after Patrick Duffy's character was killed off, so a year later the producers brought him back by explaining his death--and an entire season of shows--never happened because another character had dreamed it. It erased a season's worth of crappy storylines, but it also sealed the show's fate because more viewers quit watching it. I don't think the dream idea for "Alien 5" would go over well at the box office (even though I like the dream idea).

Alien 5: who would be a good choice to direct?
I was chatting with a buddy the other night about the possibility of a fifth Alien movie. We both agreed that the use of different directors (and their particular styles) is a good trend to continue. With that in mind, we also agreed that David Cronenberg would be a primo choice to direct another installment. Considering his oeuvre, need I say more?

Singer? Eh...
Burton? I'd put him in the same quirky neighborhood as Jeunet (I'd include Del Toro in here as well) which could be redundant.
Lynch? Maybe...
Cronenberg still strikes me as an excellent candidate as the concept of the aliens meshes so well with the themes he likes to explore (that of generally icky things happening to the human body).
George Romero might be another good choice.

Ridley Scott. I'd like to see it harken back to the more primitive times of the original, when you didn't have to SEE it to be scared. That or just a really great action oriented one, I think Scott could do either.

Hasn't the tradition been with each Alien film to give it to an up and coming director? Everyone mentioned has been a good choice, but I'd rather see it given to someone much less known, like Glen Morgan or Michel Gondry.
