Oh yeah, it's a huge nit. It just sucked for me that in the middle of the car chase, the minis are landing on their nose, and I'm thinking, "wait, I thought they had 2500 pounds of gold in the trunk." It really took me out of the movie because it just shattered my supsension of disbelief.

There was plenty of unrealistic stuff, but I think that one bothered me so much because I didn't expect it.

A nit I will pick: I thought the Edward Norton character was quite smart and that was one of the good things about the movie. He wasn't easy to beat. But
Spoiler:
why didn't he think of the weight issue when he was playing the shell game with the three trucks? I did, immediately, before they used it in the movie, and I don't consider myself a master criminal mind. In fact, it seems obvious. He could have loaded the three trucks so the one with the gold and another (say with the right amount of lead) were equal and the other one without the gold had more weight (say a lot more lead) and thus that truck would have ridden lower to the ground and it would look like that was the one with the gold. I think he was smart enough to have thought of that.

Still, I loved the movie.

Can "The Italian Job" do it?

It's currently at $96,174,082. Grossing $391,601 this past weekend. Do you think it'll make it to the $100 million mark? Please, no "what does it matter?" responses. Just wondering what the likely hood or chances are. Personally, I would like to see it make it to the 100 million dollar club. I enjoyed the movie a great deal.

I wish it would, but its a long shot. With the DVD coming out on 10/21, and the way its been performing and its loss percentage... I doubt it could.

I have recommended to everyone who I've discussed Summer movies with to go see, and those who did were not disappointed. I think this is one of those films that eventhough it had great word-of-mouth it wasn't promoted well, or had too much competition.

Another question: did this perform as expected? And would you call this a "sleeper"? I think DVDFile referred to it as one when they announced the DVD date.

I think it did quite well as counter-programming to the typical summer fare. Quite frankly, if they would have done another small ad campaign a few weeks after release they could have gotten even more people in the theaters.

I tend to think not, but would it be at all worth rereleasing a bit to push it over? 100 mil isn't what it used to be, but I"m shocked it made this much money, because I heard very little about it after it's opening weekend. I'm suprised it so far outgrossed 28 Days Later, which I would have thought would have been slotted where the Italian Job ended up. I just checked movietickets.com, and it's only showing in 3 local theaters(I live about 10 miles outside of NYC) so I would doubt it will make it. Which begs the question, what's the closest a film ever came to making 100 million but didn't get it?

Not sure if it's the closest, but Disney's Hercules made $99,112,101.

I think it'll actually be lukcy to reach $97 mill. Though I really don't think Paramount cares. I'm sure they will make even more off it on dvd.

Can I get a "Please No!" Since "What does it care" was taken. Nice to see Marky Mark will sit back and say "Hey the Italian Job was a success, what other classic movies can I re-make into souless crap and sell to the masses?"

Looks like Paramount does care:

'Italian Job' Sentenced to Additional Run
Fri Aug 15, 4:36 AM ET Add Movies - Reuters to My Yahoo!

By Gregg Kilday

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "The Italian Job," the heist remake starring Mark Wahlberg (news), Charlize Theron (news) and Edward Norton (news), is planning another run at the box office bank.

Paramount Pictures said Thursday it will rerelease the film in 1,500-2,000 locations Aug. 29, the beginning of the Labor Day holiday weekend.

The film, which was playing in about 200 theaters last weekend, has grossed $96.4 million since its original release May 30, and the reissue should push it past the century mark. The only new wide release scheduled for that weekend is the horror flick "Jeepers Creepers 2."

Editing Dialogue (Italian Job Specific)

I watched this again last night (watched it the first time in theaters) and noticed something again...

When Charlie is talking to Skinny Pete on the phone, Pete says something to the effect of 'mother FREAKING Ukranians'. You can tell that 'freaking' was dubbed in over the 'F' word. Why? The 'F' word is used later on anyway when Steve is flying in the helicopter..."Where's my f'ing truck?".

Just wondering why edits like this happen. The line by Skinny Pete sounds and looks ridiculous. I could understand if maybe they wanted to get the lone 'F' word out of there, but they use it anyway.

Along the same lines, when Steve is being dragged away you hear him plead "Come on Charlie!" but his mouth never moves.

Me venting, I guess.

They probably took out the second F word to avoid an R rating.

Why would one extra F word cause an R rating? That'd be insane.

You are only allowed to use certain words a certain number of times and still maintain an "R" rating and I believe that the "F word" is one of those words . . .

Yeah I think you can ge away with one F bomb with pg-13. Something like that. It's not exact science, the MPAA isall over the place with that.
