The Time Machine(1960) used this same idea. When Wells demonstrates with the time machine model, he tells his friends the machine is still there, even though they can't see it, occupying the same space in the future. When Wells travels in the full scale model he never leaves his laboratory, occupying the exact same space. The Morlocks drag his machine into their citadel, so when he returns to his time the machine is outside his laboratory because the Morlocks moved it. When he decides to return to the future he has to drag the machine back into his lab first so he will appear outside the citadel.

I thought it was a great plot point. In fact, since I saw this movie the first time about 5 years ago I couldn't quite remember if Amy actually died or not.

I wouldn't take the guy at his word but the best way to prove he's lying is to speak with Amy, which Wells was urging them to do. Finally Wells gets them to act.....by confessing to all the murders, the only lie he tells.

I admit it's good suspense but those cops were made extra dumb just to drive viewers insane.

What would would happen if the time machine was destroyed at some point and you went beyond that time?

Also, I love the film (saw it almost 30 years ago in the theater when it first came out and MANY times since), but why wouldn't HG be smart enough to just go back in time one day and stop Jack from escaping into the future in the first place? Yeah, because then there's no movie. Hmm. Is there a 5-second version of this on YouTube? That would be it.

Re: Time After Time, 1979

Can anyone give me a rundown of any differences in picture quality between the Warner snap case DVD edition of TIME AFTER TIME and their later (2008) keepcase edition?

I don't know the answer to your question, but I wanted to chime in and say how much I love this movie.

No differences at all. The discs are identical.

Re: Time After Time, 1979

I never had the snapcase, but the re-release is a perfectly suitable transfer for a DVD. Has a great commentary with Malcolm Macdowel for a truly wonderful film.

Now, that's a good use of a time machine.

Ditto. I loved this one growing up. I was watching the Malcolm McDowell doc on the BD of Clockwork Orange and found out he later married Mary Steenburgen.

This needs a great Blu treatment.

I watched this about a year ago for the first time and was mildly impressed. David Warner played a good villain, but Steenburgen was rather green as the bank employee.

Re: Time After Time, 1979

One part that puzzled me. When Wells is trying to pawn his "antiques," the pawnshop owner says he requires ID, otherwise he can wait a week. Wells replies, "I don't have a week." So Wells spends the night on a park bench.

Then, in the morning, he successfully hocks the same antiques, no questions asked. Hmmm.

Darn. I thought this thread was about that movie where Superman goes back in time after staring intently at a penny.

You are getting Mary Steeburgen mixed up with Jane Seymore.

Re: Time After Time, 1979

I'm a big SF fan, love time travel/alt history stories, have friends who share those interests and who raved about this movie... but for some reason I haven't seen it and have no inclination to do so, despite having seen the trailer and watching bits of it on TV.

For some reason(s) this film holds absolutely no interest for me.

Re: Time After Time, 1979

Truth be told, when I watch this movie - I feel like I'm REALLY in a Time Machine.........except, the time machine is going back to the past instead of the future. It's really a trip to see 1979 up close and personal

Re: Time After Time, 1979

Loved the movie, saw it in the Theaters back in 79.

Watched it on NetFlix a few months ago.

-I love almost any movie that has to do with time travel
-Loved Mary Steeburgen role in the movie, and she seems to always play the same role
-Humor was great
-Reaction between Wells and the bad guy (his best friend from the past) really adds to the suspense
