Also the fact that it's a mockumentary probably disqualifies it

Documentaries are works of fact. Mockumentaries are works of fiction. Hardly the same.

Many fine titles have been listed, couple of stinkers too, but that's to be expected.

I consider The Corporation to be one of the best discs released this year. Another recent release more directly related to your interests is Oil On Ice about the Arctic National Wildlife refuge.

In September, look for Monumental a bio doc on David Brower, who was a prime-mover in conserving America's wilderness.

"Winged Migration is a good one if you haven't seen it."

I think Winged Migration is still a good one, even if you have seen it.
Or did you mean that Winged Migration is a good one if you haven't seen it, but a bad one if you have seen it?

I also agree with The Corporation, and many others mentioned.

One I thought was great and don't think I've seen on this list is Bus 174 ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0340468/ ).

EDIT: Forgot to add Herzog's Little Dieter Needs to Fly. Great documentary.

All the people at a local video store tell me that "Chickenhawk" is excellent---if you can stomach it. Paradise Lost or Brother's Keeper come to mind.

But my all-time fav.: The Dancing Outlaw

I just saw a great documentary about the 70's girl band The Runaways. It was very interesting.

Also, another vote for Capturing the Friedmans, which is absolutely an unsettling, exploratory look at the situation.

I know you said nothing about rock docs, but I was also impressed with The Flaming Lips: Fearless Freaks.

Bob Dylan: Don't Look Back (my personal favorite documentary ever, perfection)

Some Herzog stuff I have seen like..
Little Dieter Needs to Fly and Lessons of Darkness

From what I understand the new box set of Errol Morris stuff is superb, I am trying to slowly get there.

Looking for good documentaries

Hi,

I really enjoy a good documentary, especially if it tells the story of an extraordinary / special person. Don't get me wrong, I love the BBC documentaries showing wildlife and nature very much too, but I am interested in human stories.

A couple of great documentaries I enjoyed:
- Man on wire
- Bus 174
- Grizzly man
- touching the void

Can anyone recommend any others? Could we maybe turn this thread in the "ultimate documentary recommendations"?

Thanks a million!

Re: Looking for good documentaries

As a general recommendation, if you have Netflix they have a great selection of Documentaries as part of their streaming service.
