Personally I think Daredevil was one of the biggest turds of the past few years both visually & creatively all around. I'm as big of a comic book fan as there can be, & I've never liked Ghost Rider, just one of the most one-dimensional & boring characters ever IMO. Plus, I don't like Nic Cage, so this is one comic book adaptation I have zero interest in.

And yes, I also feel that Del Toro is a serious force to be reconded with in terms of visuals. I've seen most of Cronenberg's pictures and I'm not really sure what you we're getting at, I mean, he's really quite good as a visualist, but as a filmmaker, he's very subpar. His films are very internal and I find them pretty boring for the most part. They work very well as a concept, but I just don't think he has enough talent to pull them off.
Kar-Wai, sorry, I don't eat chinese.

You're a pompous prick.
And I'm referring to Naked Lunch, ExistenZ, Videodrome, etc. They all work well as concepts, but as movies, they're subpar, because they are just not very entertaining. They would work well as books, but as movies I find them boring. Elektra and DareDevil entertained me, I'm a fan of the respective comics and I thought the films we're fun pieces of entertainment. I don't think you have any room to talk, I mean, you do own 3000 Miles to Graceland and Charlie's Angels. I can clearly see you disagree, let's leave it at that.

And my issue with your posts was never what is "entertaining" b/c clearly Cronenberg & non-mainstream films are not for you. I'm just debating the bold statement you made of " no one can match Del Toro for visual pizazz". So all I'm talking about is what a director does Visually. I'm a HUGE Del Toro fan, I think he is a great guy as well, but that statement is just absurd & I don't think Del Toro would hold a candle to someone like Cronenberg who Del Toro himself has said is one of the biggest influences on his style & you can see the inluence in so much of Del Toro's work. Del Toro doesn't even have his own visual voice, I think his work his awesome, but it is so heavily influenced by others, there are plenty of directors who far surpas him with "visual pizazz".

Touche! You presume to know everything about me from a couple of fuckin posts on this board, well, that makes you a moron, plain and simple. You don't know what movies I've seen, you have a vague idea of my tastes in film. Trust me buddy, I've likely seen more low-budget, foreign, indie flicks than you can dream of.
And I don't know what you've seen and where your tastes lie, but I do know that you have this air of superiority about you that makes me want to want to knock your teeth in, sadly we're not talking in person.

Qui Gon and Sessa: is it possible, just once, for somebody to post their opinions on this messageboard without another user looking at it, disagreeing, and then having a flame war erupt?
Who am I kidding, this is the movie thread of DVDtalk. Glad I don't go to "otter" very much, those posts are hurtful.
That said, can anyone recommend some good Ghost Rider TPBs or collections that might be available? He has always fascinated me as a character, but I have never really picked up any of the comics.

In the early 90s Marvel reprinted the old Ghost Rider comics under the title "Original Ghost Rider" (I'm pretty sure that's what it's called) and it was pretty good. I bet Marvel will reprint those in their b&w "Essentials" line in the next year.

Jack: that post had me laughing so hard that someone at work asked me if there was anything wrong.

So is Nick Cage still shooting for a PG-13 rating and insisting all comic book films should be kid friendly?
I know at first that rubbed me the wrong way but then I realized I'm having the hardest time recalling the tone of the Ghost Rider comics. If it's like Batman (dark but not overly violent) a PG-13 is fine by me but if it's like The Punisher....

USA Today article
'Ghost Rider' fan Cage will play title role
He's directing only his third film, but Mark Steven Johnson has learned the secret to luring A-list talent to his movies: Offer them comic-book characters.
That's how he nabbed Ben Affleck for 2003's Daredevil, and it worked again in attracting Nicolas Cage for the lead in Ghost Rider, due Aug. 4, 2006.
"Most of these guys are comic-book geeks like me," Johnson says from Melbourne, Australia, where he is shooting the story of Johnny Blaze (Cage), a biker who sells his soul to the devil to save his girlfriend and then struggles with his demonic side, aka Ghost Rider. "Nic is one of the biggest fans of the comic book out there."
So big, in fact, that the actor sports a tattoo of the Ghost Rider's flaming skull on his arm. Makeup artists had to cover it for the film. Says Johnson: "The irony is we had to remove Nic's Ghost Rider so he could play Ghost Rider."

From comicbookresources.com:
Sci Fi Wire caught up with director Mark Steven Johnson, who talked about taking the original David Goyer script and making it more like the comics. "It's one of those things that there is no right or wrong to it," Johnson said. "He just chose a different story, and I really liked it. It just isn't the story that I was going to tell. So they're really completely different screenplays. I really like David's writing a lot, though. [I'm a] big fan of him. The fact that the devil made a deal with Johnny and gave him all these powers, and Johnny took those powers to go fight the devil, never quite added up. And so everybody over the years kept trying to solve that and change that. So it's kind of actually a faulty concept in a weird way. So that was odd. That's something that took me many, many months to finally crack it. And once I came up with the idea of the devil's bounty hunter, that there's rules in heaven and hell on Earth, [it made sense]. The idea is that Mephistopheles has to find the best rider in the world to become his Ghost Rider, that made sense to me. He has to give him this power, because he works for him. Then I got it. Then everything from there flowed. But at first it was tough."
They also caught up with Nicolas Cage, who said he was fine with the effects work on the Marvel adaptation. "I've always enjoyed working with effects," Cage said. "To me, it's just stimulating to be around it, to participate. ... After the production is finished shooting here, I want to go to where they're working on the effects and say hello and see what they're doing with all the painting and how they're going to make the fire work, because fire is, you probably know, the most difficult of all the digital effects to pull off. We've managed to really put a great deal of humor [in it]. That came naturally to me. I think that heavy material is inherently -- I know this is going to sound strange -- but it can lend itself very easily to humor. Because I think people, when they're in heavy occupations, you look at paramedics or cops, they have the blackest humor. But it's a way of coping with the situation."
Man this sounds bad.
