Both lord of the rings movies. The movies were awesome don't get me wrong but the endings didn't leave anything to the imagination to look forward to in the next one.. just some hobbits walking off in the distance i know i'm gonna get flamed for this one but go ahead.. i've read the books so it's not that i didn't like it.. just the ending wasn't that good

Sincere question for glassdragon: considering that you've read the books, how would you have ended the LOTR films? I personally thought that ending FOTR at the first chapter of the second book worked a lot better than ending it were the book ended.

As for me, my standard response for these threads is Contact.

I didn't mean the VERY end, just a little before it, the acting of Sofia when... well, you know... (too lazy to figure out how to use spoilers so I won't continue).

That tacked-on feel-good ending to Blade Runner.

I will have to disagree, with a movie witha twist ending, it is either a love it or hate it strategy. I know not that many people liked this movie, but I really did. I thought it was really good.

I always hated the ending to Contact as well. And you're right, I do believe it helps the underlying theme of the movie, but it also ignores common logic.

Spoiler:
I mean they try to make it act like she imagined the whole thing during the hearings, but never once bring up the fairly strong factual evidence that supports her theory (i.e. the videotape). It's good in one sense and horribly annoying in another sense

I have to admit I like some of the endings mentioned here though. Both The Devil's advocate and Arlington Road I do like, but like many I did not like the ending to A.I.

Well, yes and no.

If you turn off the DVD like I do immediately after the pod gets trapped under the ferris wheel, then the ending is brilliant.

If you stay for the controversial, doesn't-quite-work coda, then yes, AI ends poorly.

What's wrong with me? I loved the ending to A.I., such a melancholy feeling. For a cheesy movie, I thought the ending to The Devil's Advocate was appropriate. I also liked the endings to Vanilla Sky and Arlington Road.

It has been some time since I watched or read Contact, but IIRC
Spoiler:
the tapes are inconclusive—the elapsed time seems to corroborate her story but there are no images or other supporting evidence. The time elapsed could have resulted from a malfunction.

I see the tapes as similar to Christian icons like the Shroud of Turin or the sliver of the cross that some point to as “proof” of God’s existence. Since faith is the cornerstone of Christianity, verifiable evidence of God’s existence would essentially undermine the basis for the religion. The priest sums it up when he asks Elle if she loved her father. She says, “yes.” And the priest responds: “prove it.”

Man, I thought the ending of "The Firm" was horrid. The ending in the book was far, far superior and I wish they would've held to that more closely.

Where's that dude who hated the ending to Goodfellas since it ended so abruptly?

We needed to tell him to flip the disc over.

The ending of AI is perfect. If it had ended at the ferris wheel it would have been an inconclusive ending.

I like all of "Arlington Road", especially the ending. While it may have been logistically a stretch, it was a gutsy ending.

The ending of "Wisdom" has always lingered in my mind as one of those frustrating experiences.

I was sitting there in the theatre with my husband saying, "That's not what happened in the book! In the book..."

I hated the ending to Kevin Costner's Revenge.
Spoiler:
I couldn't believe it when Madelaine Stowe DIED!
That just sucked!

Well FOTR actually ended 2 chapters or so into the second book.. spoilers below from the book
Do not read unless you've read the book or want stuff given away.

Spoiler:
The second book starts with boromir getting killed and so on so if they ended it at a better time then maybe it would have been a good cliff-hanger. TTT doesn't even come close the same ending as the book it's missing like 5 chapters from the end of book 2, wherein Gollum leads sam and frodo through the spider queen Shalob's cave and frodo gets killed leaving sam with the responsibility of delivering the ring, just as sam finds out Shalob's venom doesn't kill it just knocks out from some orcs that are carrying frodo's lifeless body away to take back to their commander. And it ends with sam realizing he has to save Frodo who is still alive but in orcs hands now. IMO that would have been a much better way to end the second movie and get people very very very excited to see ROTK. once again just my opinion

I have a friend who's a big movie watcher and he says that "Coyote Ugly" and "Dr. T & the Women" are the absolute worst endings of all time.

Now there's a film I never, ever thought would be mentioned in a "worst ending" thread.

The last 20 minutes of Cube 2: Hypercube were god awful. The film started out pretty good...

Spoiler:
But when the "group" splits up, it went downhill. Two people decide to have sex which kills them and then the "blind girl" just gives up (the pansy). Then once the lead "escapes" the hypercube, what later follows with the goverment was awful. Nice try at a dark ending completely ruined.

The last 20 minutes of Cube 2: Hypercube not only raped the previous 70 minutes of the film, but also raped everything that the first Cube stood for.
