Zeta-Jones joins cast of 'Ocean's Twelve'
2/11/2004
LOS ANGELES -- Catherine Zeta-Jones has joined Julia Roberts in the cast of "Ocean's Twelve."
"Now I have two of the most beautiful women in the world in this picture," producer Jerry Weintraub told The Associated Press late Tuesday.
Roberts starred in 2001's "Ocean's Eleven" with George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Andy Garcia, directed by Steven Soderbergh and produced by Weintraub. That film was a remake of the Frank Sinatra movie.
Weintraub said adding Zeta-Jones to the sequel's cast is a dream come true. Zeta-Jones won an Oscar for her role in 2002's "Chicago."
"I think this is my crowning achievement. I've been wanting to work with her and we had this wonderful role for a woman and it's hard to find someone of that stature, an Oscar winner," he said.
Shooting is scheduled to begin April 12. Clooney, Pitt, Damon and Garcia also are returning for the sequel, the producer said.

That would work for me. CZJ will most likely steal the the movie from Roberts anyway.

But that has nothing to do w/ the fact that Catherine is drop-dead gorgeous and kills Julia in the looks department.

Charlie Goose: You're not the only one that thinks JR is prettier than CZJ. Both Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles told me the same thing today, just kiddin!
But really, I cant wait for this one, her style fits perfectly for the role. I wouldve liked to see another woman as the 12th member but this is also cool.

Early Screenings go bad for Ocean's 12
Heres some reviews I found on early screenings of the movie, I have not found one good one yet.
I just returned from a screening in Scottsdale, at the Shea 14, and though I have to say I enjoyed the first film, this lacked greatly from what the Ocean's 11 had to offer. Not only is the screenplay lazy and lacking originality, the editing is truly bad, the music is strange in places, and the ending sucks beyond belief. I was so looking forward to this film only to have my hopes dashed in the most horrible ways.
What was great about the first film is the planning put into the heist and seeing the hardwork of the charcters to accomplish the big job. However, in this film, not only does the story avoid the hardwork and planning of the charcters, almost portraying them as just a bunch of jokers who don't know what they are doing, the story avoids the eleven almost all together. The scenes including the original eleven are by far the best, but they are so few and far between, it is disappointing. The script focuses so much on Catherine Zeta-Jones' character, Isabelle, that the rest of the gang is avoided. Don't get me wrong, she looks incredible. But her character is so unrealistic, and the end of the film tries to even add a very serious element to her part in the film which is absolutely unnecessary and strange to have included because, quite honestly, they give us no reason to like her other than the fact that she looks great with short hair. Pathetic. But that's not the worst part...
SPOILERS ALERT
...at one point in the film, about two-thirds of the way through, 7 of the original 11 get nabbed and go to jail before they even get to try their supposed heist. Well, what happens now? Matt Damon calls up Tess (Julia Roberts) and asks her to come visit them in Europe, assuring her everything is fine. She gets to Rome and the guys tell her that she needs to impersonate Julia Roberts and help them get near their intended prize so that they can steal it and get the money back to Andy Garcia in time. I'm NOT kidding. Yes, it's a funny idea, but this goes on for 12 to 15 minutes, incorporating Bruce Willis into the mix, avoiding an entire sense of realism and jumping into the realm of ridiculous. It's so disappointing. It's such lazy script writing that I couldn't believe what was happening on screen. Awful.
Other points, the music is awkward, and that is a shame, because I loved it in the first one. They have this one theme that plays every time Brad Pitt and Catherine Zeta-Jones are together and it is so strange, not to mention, loud! The editing in the first 20 minutes is so fast paced and strange, the film jumps back and forth between trying to be serious and funny. And lastly, but certainly not the least, the ending is horrible. In the first film, the 11 came, concocted, and conquered; the twist at the end makes sense because we saw it all happen. In this pathetic sequel, after everything takes place, the audience had no idea what had happened, if they got the item or not, because they didn't show it. There was no preparation. And I won't even begin with the French man and a stupid yoga/dance/acrobatic scene jumping and twirling between lasers at a museum. Ridiculous.
I am sorry to say this all. I was looking forward to it as much as anyone. But the script is so lazy and did not utilize the interaction between the characters that made 11 such a joy. Avoid this lump of coal over the holiday season unless they make MAJOR headway in editing, though I do not know how they could change the major flaws of this film without a rewrite and reshooting fundamental scenes. Don't worry, there will be enough good stuff in the theatres. Steven S. was no Santa this year.

so i went to a screening. i wasnt even aware how early i was seeing the movie. i liked oceans 11 but i wasnt a huge fan. surprisingly i thought it was better than the original. let me just say this...just because you liked the first one does not mean you will like this.
the plot is g-d awful. its one of the saddest excuses to make a sequel ive ever seen.
let me give u a slight breakdown of the plot so i dont get called a liar or anything. ill try to keep the spoilers to a miniumum.
the movie starts out with andy garcias character finding all the guys from the original and telling them he wants his money back. the 11 people then meet up an d decide what to do. they decide that they will start robbing lots of places till they have enough money to pay back andy garcia.
upon doing so they find that another master thief has beat them to the punch on the first job. he challenges the group to a thievery competition of sorts to decide who are the better thieves, him or danny ocean's band (which isnt really 12 in this movie...nor 11....because people quit or go away or get arrested etc). he says that if he loses the game he will pay off their debt to andy garcia. then the race is on.
does this not sound horrible to u guys? the plot was a joke, the editing was horribly done (but perhaps due to it being an early cut) and the ending is increidbly anti-climactic.
the only thing i liked was the chemistry between some of the characters. oh and there are a few good chuckles in there...not enough to save it though.
entertaining....but stupid. i give it a 5.5 out of 10.

I would pay to see this just to hear Andy Garcia go "Oooh, it's on!"

It's a very early version so these reviews really don't mean a thing. I remember getting to see a rough cut of Scent of a Woman sometime in the spring of 92. I nearly walked out it was so bad and Pacino was practically unbearable to watch, such a stupid character. Nearly a year later I decided to see the final release version for the hell of it and loved it, saw it twice. Funny thing is it was only about ten or fifteen minutes shorter but I guess that made all the difference.

Well, if the movie actually does have in store for us what the reviewer wrote, I might have to skip out on this one.
Seems like they have decided to take these cool characters and have stuff happen to them to prove they aren't that cool. Sad.
I hope there is some minor re-vamping at some point. Furthermore, this sequel would make the events of the first movie null and void for the most part. Unless they have a third one already planned and want to make this one an ESB kind of sequel to bridge the two, this doesn't bode well.

Well, in other roles they never come out and say "She looks like Julia Roberts!" when her character appears. This the kind of gimmick they pull in slapstick comedies, not heist movies.

Oh I know, Dr. DVD. But in her case it's not even worth a chuckle cos lately she hasn't tried to be anything but herself. She never immerses herself in a role. She just plays herself in any given situation and it really ruins the credibility of the characters she portrays.
And, like you said, "this the kind of gimmick they pull in slapstick comedies, not heist movies". It has no business even being considered as a potential scene in this movie.
