I love Titanic, but I whole heartedly agree with this statement. There are also little moments when historical figures are introduced with the same style as one of those big cameo filled extravaganzas like It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. "Hey look, it's the Unsinkable Molley Brown!"

I like Titanic and think it's a darn good movie. The only reason I don't own it on DVD yet is b/c I keep hearing it'll be re-released.

Empty slams at James Cameron's directing ability or the "period piece's" lack of credibility are kinda funny. Not that the Academy is the end-all, be-all, but Kate Winslet was nominated for Best Actress, Cameron won for Best Director, and the movie itself won for Best Costume Design. Some people say that "Oscars are irrelevant" or something like that, and all I can say to that is: it is pretty much all we have to judge. You give me a better way to judge who is acting, directing, and applying make-up () best, and I'll certainly be game.

Just because the Academy nominates a certain film doesn't make it bogus; just as a movie that isn't nominated necessarily is.

So while someone may dislike the Academy's decisions or the Academy itself, it's clear that people actually thought the directing, acting, and period piece were actually pretty good.

Granted, it's all about opinions, but some people like to throw out their "opinions" as gospel.

Not a bad film... second half is pretty well done. I don't like the love story because I find it pretty stupid... I hate a lot of little things throughout like the "historical jokes" and Danny Nucci.

Sadly, I don't like Leo. He wasn't so bad in this one actually, compaired to Romeo + Juliet, which I think is a good film, made unwatchable because he just WHINES SO DAMN MUCH.

It's not a bad film, is just doesn't connect with me.

I thought Steve Oedekerk's "Thumbtanic" was better...

but still liked "Titanic" as well.

Academy Awards and nominations have no basis in film quality. Awards and nominations are regularly handed out primarily to films that make the Hollywood establishment feel good about itself. This tendency has gotten worse in recent years (decades) but it has always been this way.

Orson Welles never won an Oscar for direction. Alfred Hitchcock never won an Oscar for direction. Martin Scorsese has never won an Oscar for direction. Both Kevin Costner and Ron Howard have won Oscars for direction.

I know we're talking about acting, but I'm not that interested in acting and also I'm more familiar with the best direction awards, which is why I used them to argue my point.
zzz. putting me to sleep with this TIRED argument.

these aren't best director ever awards. they're best director this year awards. it's quite conceivable that even though hitchcock is/was quite deserving, he was never the most deserving director in that year.

he was quite good and did win a lifetime achievement thing right? honestly, that is a FAR more interesting award even if it doesn't seem to come with the hoopla the annual awards get. I mean, it seems that James Cameron got lucky with the Titanic. But Hitchcock was good, well, the entire time.

Titanic may have won a lot of awards, but there's always the possibility that the competition wasn't so hot.

but it comes down to tastes. did hitchcock deserve an award? maybe. maybe not. and don't forget hindsight is 20/20.

The films nominated for a best director Oscar in 1955 (the year Rear Window would have been eligible) were:

On the Waterfront (the winner)
The Country Girl
The High and Mighty
Rear Window
Sabrina

so I'll concede the argument that maybe Hitch didn't deserve it that year (in light of On the Waterfront), but:

The films nominated for a best director Oscar in 1959 (the year Vertigo would have been eligible) were:

Gigi (the winner)
Cat On a Hot Tin Roof
The Defiant Ones
I Want To Live!
The Inn Of the Sixth Happiness

So, 20/20 hindsight or no, I just don't see the argument holding water here.

The other films nominated for best director that year were:

The Full Monty
Good Will Hunting
L.A. Confidential
The Sweet Hereafter

So only an Academy blinded by all the dollar signs surrounding Titanic would think the the competition "wasn't so hot..."

Well, duh! We're not arguing about trigonometry or physics here. If we only argued about factual issues in these forums I doubt many of us would be showing up.

The sequel to "Titanic" will be
"Kate & Leopald"

(...sorry, I couldn't resist. Dumb.)

I blame Titanic's success for the unending stream of "reality" programming we suffer through today.

Saw Titanic opening weekend because Scream 2 was sold out (sounds weird, I know, but remember, Titanic didn't open huge, almost didn't open at #1). Leaving the theatre, quite surprised by a movie I thought was going to suck, I said, "Wow, that was actually very good. Not perfect, but great in a lot of ways. Too bad it'll flop."

I stand by that initial reaction.

I went in to Titanic not expecting to like it and came away enjoying it very much. I didn't find it to drag at all during the 3 hours.

as many people had said , i walked out of the theatre saying ..this is one of the greatest movie i have seen and still think it is .
and those who have seen this movie n VHS ,you have definitely missed out something , This is one of those movies which has to be seen on the screen or atleast in DVD with a good sound system .

Titanic won best picture competing against
As Good As It Gets
Full Monty, The
Good Will Hunting
L.A. Confidential

Though all those movies were good , my choice is still Titanic as it had great performances from not only the actor and director but also art direction , Cinematography,Costume , Sound effects , Music etc ..an all round performance .

Of all the blockbuster films that come out, most of them are average at best (not including LOTR), however I found Titanic very entertaing and the effects breathtaking. I loved it.

I didn't hate it. I didn't love it. Ironically, Cameron is one of my favorite directors.

It's just kinda there. As Good as it Gets would be my best film of 1997.

As always, IMO:

The bad:
For a movie that seemed to need sympathy for the leads, Kate Winslet was, quite frankly, a bitch, while Leo seemed to have no personality. Now, characters dont have to be "good" to be liked or connected with.

I, for one, felt far more connection to John Travolta (Pulp Fiction) and Kevin Spacey (American Beauty), far from "good" guys, than to Leo, even though we spent 3 hours with him, and he was a "good" guy.

The old woman scenes were boring, pointless, time-wasting. Maybe because I didnt give a sh1t about her.

The good:
Anyway, the final scene where the submersible goes through the ship, and we see it new again stuck in my mind for days. The best scene in the movie.

They shouldn't of made it a love story. Maybe focused on various characters. The way the movie plays out you only feel sorry for Kate and Leo (which is wrong since it affected many lives).

I think that the script was the film's weakest link. Had Cameron hired a screenwriter, it would have made a difference. Instead, we have to live with corny dialogue (such as when Rose and Jack walk the deck the day after her attempted suicide).

The special effects really pounded the whole tragedy home for me. I felt like I was ON that ship! I've been a fan of "Titanic" ever since I was small - the irony of it all, its maiden voyage, the possible rescue from The Californian, how it could have missed the iceberg, but it struck the ship from beneath the waterline...

I enjoyed the modern-day sequences, too, with Bill Paxton. All the technical effects of explaining what happened to "Titanic," showing the ship as it is now - very enlightening.

The whole works, and I'm glad a big budget adaption was finally made on it. I was looking forward to it ever since they announced it would be out in the summer of '97...but delayed it...

It's way too long, boring, and highly overrated. It also seems to inspire intense hatred towards Leonardo Decaprio.
