I love Titanic. I also like A Night To Remember. I don't know which is better.

I'm not ashamed to admit I like Titanic. And I also admit that the dialogue can be horrendous at times. I had more of a problem with Billy Zane's sneering overacting than anything Leo did.

I'm also okay with it having won Best Picture. While I enjoyed L.A. Confidential very much,
Spoiler:
the ending with Russell Crowe's character surviving seemed like a total Hollywood copout to me.
This took me out of the film's world and reminded me I was watching a film, whereas with Titanic, the attention to detail left me immersed in the world of the film.

For the record -- I loved Titanic. I thought it was an elegant example of storytelling.

A period film with absolutely zero credibility, akin to Road to Perdition.

Cameron has lost all ability to direct actors. The script was atrocious.

Also the decision to frame the story with the modern bookends was a fundamental mistake because it excuses everything that happens: "the (miraculously) sweet old lady survived."

I didn't hate it, but I'm annoyed at the lost opportunity. Cameron gave us 2+ hours of sappy, schmaltzy love story - fictional love story - when there was so much more human drama to be told.

The Californian, only 20 miles away from Titanic while she sank. The guy who (allegedly) dressed like a woman to secure a seat on the lifeboat. The coal fire that was raging below decks. Sir Cosmo Duff Gordon, who used his wealth to put a 60+ capacity lifeboat to sea with only 5 passengers and 7 crew aboard.

Captain Smith, the musicians, the White Star PR guy - there are 2,500 stores a hundred times more interesting that what Cameron put together. Instead we get a warmed over Romeo and Juliet love story.

Given all that, I'll still probably get the SE if it ever comes out. The story may be sub-standard, but the set and art direction is dead on. In regards to the historical aspect, Jim kicked some royal bootie. In other matters, however, the movie was lacking.

My biggest problem was how much I disliked Rose. Sure, I've seen films with protagonists that I didn't like and I still enjoyed the film, but Titanic didn't work for me without caring about the characters more.

Why did I hate Rose? Let me count the ways . . .

Spoiler:

1. It was in the early 1900's and Rose wanted to marry for love, despite the fact that her family needed her to marry for money. Funny how 100 years later, it would be selfish to marry for money when back then, it was selfish not to.

2. Rose acted like an ass with a man outside of her social class while engaged. Cal was a jerk, but he wasn't unprovoked. One of the ways we were shown that Cal was a jerk was that he thought Picasso had no talent. God, the sin of having bad artistic judgement . . .

3. Rose won't get in the damn boat despite the fact that everyone would rest easier if she did. What purpose did jumping with Jack serve? Well, she got to float on the door--maybe if she'd been in the boat, Jack would have been out of the water more and survived.

4. Rose gloated a bit when she described Cal's suicide. Cal commited suicide because he made bad investments and was broke. Rose had Cal's necklace. Am I the only one who thought, you fricking thief, maybe if he had the necklace he could have sold it to cover some of his losses and he'd have lived? It was a necklace of great monetary and historical value, but somehow she thought she could keep it. I'm not saying I liked Cal, but I couldn't see her attitude about his death.

5. But no! She didn't want the necklace, so she dropped it to the bottom of the sea. Never mind its historical value. Never mind that there was a man on that boat who had committed his career to finding it. It meant nothing to her, so she threw it away.

Other than that, I liked her a whole lot.

I love Titanic. I saw it on opening night, and it was the only time I left the theater thinking "that's one of the greatest films I've ever seen." While I no longer hold it in such high regards anymore, I still think it's among the best films. Unfortunately it loses something when shown on the small screen. It's a huge film and must be seen in the theater to fully appreciate its scale IMO.
Now give me a good SE!

As for Titanic, I liked it but didn't by any stretch love it.

One thing that continues to frustrate me as a moviegoer is the amount of money spent creating these huge FX-laden blockbusters with so little attention spent towards creating a script that is worth a damn. While Titanic certainly did not sink (pun intended) to the level of something like Pearl Harbor, it certainly did not soar to the heights that it should have soared. The film was riddled with lackluster performaces and the script...not that great. Usually one has to rent a Van Damme film to find a character as one-dimensional as the one Billy Zane played in this film.

Gloria Stuart even being nominated for an acting Oscar was insulting beyond belief.

I loved the mechanics of it. I thought the love story got a little tiresome, I was more interested in the historical aspect of the sinking. I liked the movie but it got a little too whiney for me during the sinking.

Now when I watch it, opening sequence, jump to nude scene, watch sinking. Takes a little over an hour.

I'm not a Leo fan, and the storyline just isn't my type of movie. If you're looking for a factual answer, I don't have one. I'm also not a big fan of Gladiator for similar reasons.

Once again it all comes down to nipples.

Aaaaaaaah those nice nipples. They're the stuff that dreams are made of!

[drool]Mmmmmmmmh Kate Winslet[/drool]

Otherwise, this movie was terribly boring and had its own brand of "I-need-a-kind-of-stupid-audience-to-remain-believable" feeling that annoyed me a lot.

everyone always complains about the love story. please tell me how you would have made the movie to NOT be just another documentary??? the young couple just served as a metaphor for the severe loss that many felt...husbands having to watch their family leave for safety screaming because they can't go with them and vice versa.

btw, the majority of the people who believe the acting is bad are those who can't stand dicaprio. (also those who insist on going against the popular reaction to get shocking response) the acting wasn't horrible, and although it might not have been brilliant, it did have solid performances.

the only acting that really got on my nerves was Danny Nucci's, his cliched Italian accent was grating and ultra corny. (I just-a wanted to-a punch-a him-a in the face-a)

Yes, it would be inaccurate to label anyone who dislikes popular movies a film snob. Alas, I wasn't talking about everyone, I was talking about a specific group of people (who are usually found on message boards like this) who think it's popular to trash mainstream, popular cinema, without good reason.

Nice try though.

alright this has been bugging me (all get out your dvds and go to the drawing scene), in the full frame version, we can see roses bare butt, but i swear that when i saw it in the theaters and on cinemax widescreen, i didnt see it. now was this shot super 35 where we see more on the bottem than needed. (i might have influenced a few to get the vhs version) one thing that bugged me was the "you jump, i jump" bit . it was a little over done. im doing part 2 tonight.

The least Cameron could have done was somehow make the Titanic not sink and kill off just Leo and Kate.

That would have been a good "Hollywood" ending.
