Nemesis is frustrating because even though it wasn't a bad movie, it didn't bring a satisfactory close to TNG like I had hoped. The chances are slim to none that we'll ever see another TNG movie, so I guess we're stuck with it.

I'll buy it on DVD eventually though, but I'm holding out to see if they annouce a CE first.

I reccomend Nemesis. If you can sit through Insurrection, you'll like it.

I cannot understand all of the hate directed towards this Trek. It's not perfect, but it's not the pile of crud some would have you believe. I thought it was a nice way to end the Trek movie series, which it looks like it did considering it's lack of performance.
In short, yes, it's worth a blind buy if you can get it cheap.

Yeah, I remember the director announcing proudly that he had never watched an episode of TNG before making the movie. Like it was a selling point.

Truthfully though, that's the way that Gene Roddenberry envisioned the future. If you watch TOS you'll find many of the same characterizations as well as the pompous better-than-thou-through-technology attitude. Micheal Piller and Rick Berman are really the ones who changed it (around the end of season 3) to the more human, down-to-earth stories we've seen.

I hear a lot of bitching from ST fans about how bad Nemesis was, but TNG was really a mediocre series. I own all 7 seasons and over half the episodes are totally boring and unwatchable. Almost all of the complaints lodged against Voyager could also be made against TNG. DS9 also had it's fair share of bad episodes. I don't think Enterprise had one good episode.

Wasn't Nicholas Meyer the same way before TWOK? Though I believe the difference there was he sat down and watched every ep looking for a good story and found Space Seed before he filmed.

Having someone new the series can be a good thing, as they can bring a fresh new perspective, the only thing is, they need someone like one of us to sit beside them and rein them in.

I agree with the Nemesis comment, except that I did hate the movie. Final Frontier and Insurrection, hell, I can tolerate. But this one, bleh, it felt like it was tossed together by a knob who didn't do their homework.

Thanks for all the responses, folks! I went ahead and did a blind-buy on it. Normally I would just have rented it (given the mixed reviews), but in this particular case the buying price was only about $1 more than the rental fee. Again, I really appreciate all the quick responses from you guys (and gals).

Yeah, I wasn't a fan of TNG either, and I've listed that in this thread.

If I have a beef with Nemesis, it's that TPTB finally gave us a Trek movie with a substantial role for the Romulans, and what do they do? Do they draw on the considerable established lore of the Romulan people? Not really; they gave us a completely NEW villain and made the Romulans essentially supporting characters.

I don't think it's a bad movie. In fact, after having recently picked up (and watched) the Star Trek V CE, I can honestly say that I don't dislike any of the Trek movies. But I think Nemesis was, in some respects, a missed opportunity WRT the portrayal of the Romulans.

Was Nemesis the pinnacle of achievement in the Star Trek Feature film Universe? Well, no. I think that title rests squarely on the shoulders of TWOK and TVH(financially speaking). It is however an entertaining and at times exciting Trek entry. Yes, there are plot inconsistencies and the re-hash of the Wrath of Khan while not new wasn't that bad either. I would have preferred an original storyline just like the next guy but we didn't get that. What we got was a film that while largely fun, did not meet the expectations of most fans. Me, I enjoyed it. It looks good, sounds good and aside from Data's singing, and B4, was a very cool film. I do think that the powers that be @ Paramount need to give Trek something of a hiatus tho. The storyline was rather paper thin and may have been a darn sight better had some fresh eyes and minds pondered the film's plot and execution.

Funny thing is that's exactly what they did do. The writer was new to Star Trek, coming from his success with Gladiator and a self proclaimed Star trek fan. He went on to do Last Samurai, Aviator so he's not just a complete hack. And the director was new to Star Trek, having directed a coulpe ok action flicks and having been an editor on numerous action films. I was looking forward to Nemesis largely because of this, but alas, it just imo made a film worse then anythign before it.

Many people worship TNG but after re-watching it i've found it to be a seriously mediocre show. Even "classics" that I adored were rather bland upon seeing them lately..."The Inner Light", "Tapestry", etc. The show really over-emphasizes certain characters while many others are simply placeholders who can be interchanged at will.

The TOS movies are without a doubt my favorite part of the series. Although I wasn't quite fond of Star Trek XXII: So Very, Very, Old.

This is a good point. Meyer admits he knew little about the Star Trek Universe before the films. But he understood the characters and the Shakespearean archetypes that are universal to that type of storytelling. The difference is, he invested himself (leaning on Nimoy and others) in being true to the established characters and relationships while still telling the story from his angle.

The creative team behind Nemesis didn't seem to grasp that. The film has grand ideas, but the execution just doesn't feel right. That being said, I still enjoy it more than Insurrection, the momentum-killer in the series.

It just shows you how much people can disagree on this stuff. I'm a huge ST fan from way back... love the movies, loved the original show, TNG, DS9.

But I would do a complete 180 degree turn on those thumbs. (Yes, I'm one of the few and proud who think that Insurrection is the best of the TNG movies... and I'm probably the only one on the planet who thinks that First Contact was the worst. Although Nemesis comes damn close.)

To me, Insurrection felt like a mediocre (and boring) episode from the TV run. First Contact had the borg and references back to the Locutus of Borg arc that was my favorite bit in the series. It also had plenty of movie grade action and a sense of humor.

Nemesis was a pretty standard action flick set in the Star Trek universe, but I enjoyed it just for feeling a little bit different, and unlike its predecessor, for feeling like it belonged on the big screen.
