It's not like the movie was written to be chronological and a letdown. The decision was made before filming started to make it that way. I.E. it's part of the design. It doesn't work as well watching it forward because it's not intended to be watched forward. Hence, the necessity of the backwards framing.

You take something like Pulp Fiction and put it in chronological order, and I think it would still work (if having a lesser ending), because it doesn't really HAVE to be that way. Others will disagree I'm sure.

Im not saying they made it backwards as a novelty but Im saying thats why a lot of people liked it.
