I watched God of Cookery and laughed until I burst. What are some good Stephen Chow films that I would also like based on the fact that I liked God of Cookery?

I was going to recommend some Stephen Chow movies to you Trigger. Then I remembered you would just end up trashing them completely so I decided not to.

Muldoon has removed the database from the http://www.asiandvdguide.com which (used to) hosts reviews for many different DVD releases (Universe vs. Mei Ah versions of same film on DVD) and also posts news. His reason apparently is that he feels that some visitors to his site were stealing his news information and not giving him proper credit. You can go there now and see for yourself - hopefully he will bring it back. You can still go into the forum over there and plead with him to return the database. I as I'm sure many of you have found that database to be invaluable when shopping for HK DVDs. I can't imagine a world without it. -sad-

You're mean. I'm sorry you don't agree with my opinions of movies - I just post my mini-reviews of the films I watch because I wanna talk about em. I'm not trying to trash on anybody else's opinion or insult anyone. I'm sorry if you feel that way.



If you look at my mini-reviews, I like most of the film I watch that you guys suggest... I just didn't care for a few (East is Red, 5 Element Ninja, etc) - and most of the ones I didn't like are ones that I got on my own without any influence from this forum.

King of Comedy (more serious, I read it's better if you've seen a lot of his stuff first. On the bad side, there is one questionable scene. But on the good side, there's Cecilia Cheung.

Definitely FROM BEIJING WITH LOVE, which is a very funny James Bond spoof.

FORBIDDEN CITY COP is very good and a semi-sequel to FROM BEIJING WITH LOVE, although it's a period piece. Unfortunately the DVD is basically just the laserdisc version with the same burned-in subs. Hopefully they'll remaster it soon.

GOD OF GAMBLERS III: BACK TO SHANGHAI is also a great film, but the DVD is fullscreen!

LOVE ON DELIVERY is an extremely funny romantic comedy, but the DVD quality isn't so hot (burned-in subs).

FLIRTING SCHOLAR is an amusing period piece with Gong Li (who's also in GOD OF GAMBLERS III). Definitely worth getting.

If you are interested in seeing Chiau at his most ambitious, then you should get CHINESE ODYSSEY PARTS I and II, in which Stephen does his version of the Monkey King. There is as much drama as comedy in these.

I watched Zu: Warriors yada yada yada by Tsui Hark today... it was interesting. I thought it was really good - much better than I expected given when it was made. It was alot of good fun... it sort of fell apart near the end, but I can give it a thumbs up. What did you guys think of it?

Well, considering that Reeves was the returning lead and that Je Li had only a non-returning supporting role (and has proven only a lukewarm draw at the domestic box-office), maybe it wasn't such a "screwing" after all.

"The Matrix" did just fine without any actual martial artists, so why throw money at one of them just to get him to sign? Now if Jet Li was coming off of a hit like CTHD when the deal was offered, I'd agree that it was an insult. Or if "The Matrix 2" was a b.o. bust and they needed some street cred for the third installment... Personally, I feel that Jet Li's Hollywood career needed those Matrix sequels more than they needed him.

I just recently saw this movie for the first time and was terribly disappointed. I had heard so much hype about this movie that I expected it to be some sort of masterpiece. In my opinion it seemed very dated and sloppily put together. And the special effects were actually painful to watch.

I could easily see this movie showing up on MST3K. I got it used in a swap for a cd that I paid a buck for and I don't think I got my money's worth. And I consider myself a fan of the genre and know when not to take a movie to seriously.

I've got to agree with you on this one. I'm not the completionist that some people are, so I only wanted to own one version. Just knowing that the domestic release had a JC commentary track was pushing me in that direction, but I actually liked the US version better - and usually I'm a fan of director's cuts!

God of Cookery is my faorite Stephen Chow movie...my second favorite would be King of Comedy...so i would recomend this one to ya....

I love Stephen Chiau. I'll watch anything with him in it. Unfortunately, I'm a cheap guy so I've mostly seen his early $5 movies. Of those, I'd say Magnificent Scoundrels is probably the best. If I remember right, you had an interest in Sex & Zen so you might want to check it out as Amy Yip has a pretty big role. Theresa Mo is also very funny in it. I also like his first movie, Final Justice, but this is a more serious cop movie.

God of Cookery & Chinese Odyssey are my favorites - especially Part 1. I was disappointed by King of Beggars. It was too serious I guess. Also disappointed by his last movie, King of Comedy. The disc has lots of extras but the movie was pretty boring. The mostly young cast tries too hard & isn't funny. Royal Tramp has some bizarre gross bits but is very funny. I've read nothing but good things about From Beijing With Love, but I haven't seen it yet. That'll probably be part of my next order.

I love Zu. I think it's one of the best fantasy movies ever. It's more colorful & good humored than most & it's the closest I've found to a HK kid's movie. Despite the unfortunate virginity bit, this is a great family movie. I would've gone crazy for this movie if I'd seen it as a kid when it first came out. In fact, I did kind of go crazy for it anyway last year when I first saw it. Beats the heck out of Krull, Megaforce, & most other English language fantasy pics coming out at that time.

Ok, well - based on Lok and Bob's suggestions, I think I'll go this route instead. You two seem to have similar tastes then given you favor God of Cookery. Thanks.

King of Comedy I've heard so many mixed reviews on - so perhaps I should just decide for myself. Forbidden City Cop and maybe Justice My Foot are also questionable since they seem to be his most popular films along with God of Cookery... unless I'm mistaken. He sounds like a hit or miss type of actor though. I just loved God of Cookery, so I'm willing to take a gamble. I might even check out Royal Tramp cuz I like gross stuff.

As for Zu - I agree, I was pretty impressed with the special effects given the time it was made. Much better than Krull and others. I don't think the virgin part is such a big deal - if the kids are too young to know about it, then they won't understand what it means anyway. If you're old enough to know the word "virgin" then you're old enough to handle hearing it. I think violence is alot more damaging to a child's psyche than sex is. That's just me though... this is a fantastic family film though - too bad a dub wasn't included for younger kids. Also - the whole virgin thing just meant "innocent" - that's what I got out of it anyway. I don't think it's a dirty word. What about Virgin Records? (speaking of Virgin Records - is that really an appropriate name for a store that constantly rapes their customers on a daily basis? - sorry)

I feel like this is deja vu, I must have posted what I am about to say at least a half dozen times on various sites, including this one. Stephen Chow's best movies are 1995 and before. This is a general consensus based on my opinions, opinions of other expert movie reviewers, box office, and awards presentations. His movies will always be good for box office, but he hasn't had a seriously good movie since the two Chinese Odyssey films in 1995.

On the other hand, the number of great movies that Stephen has rung up since All For the Winner in 1990 is staggering. At least a dozen films that I would consider excellent movies.

My favorite five, in no particular order: Fight Back to School, God of Gamblers II, God of Gamblers III: Back To Shanghai, From Beijing With Love, Flirting Scholar. None of his post 1995 films come close to these.

Well, it's ahrd for me to remember what titles would be considered this movie's contemporaries, but I must admit that it was better than both Krull and Megaforce.

But that's not really saying much.

And, I guess I could see kid enjoying it, as previously mentioned. And maybe I'd have been more fond of it if I saw it as a kid... Oh well, I'm still surprised that I heard that they're planning on (finally) making a sequel.

Where did you hear that? Is it going to be a Tsui Hark film also? Dish out the details, yo.

Yeah, i guess based on Stormriders success, Tsui Hark just couldnt resist so he's doing a new Zu film. From what i've read its not a remake, prequel, or a sequel; its just kind of a new completely independent Zu film, based on the same novel and taking advavtage of new fx, CGI, and whatnot.

The cast has Luois Koo, Ekin Cheng, Cecilia Cheung, and Zhang Ziyi. Sammo makes a cameo, one hopes he'll be having the mighty eyebrows again. I think Yuen Woo Ping got on board in the wire-action department, or maybe it was Sammo, I forget. Miramax picked it up for US distrabution; God only knows what kind of hack job they will do.

I can't add much more than what iaido already said except that Tsui Hark was quoted as saying that he was really looking forward to using state-of-the art special effects to more fully realize his vision this time around.

I agree with Yellow Hammer's comments about Stephen Chow's films. He seems to have gone downhill in recent years with sloppy films like God of Cookery. He had some early misses too, like Legend of the Dragon and All's Well Ends Well, but most of his good films are from his early days. In addition to the films recommended by YH, I'd recommend:

Fight Back to School II
Fist of Fury 1991
God of Gamblers II
Love on Delivery (some parts are cheesy, but some are just hilarious)

and my favorite Stephen Chow film, the film that defined his character and style, All for the Winner, which unfortunately is not out on DVD.

On the other hand, if you did like God of Cookery, you may also like King of Comedy, Fight Back to School 3, and Legend of the Dragon. The latter two are films I consider to be in the "miss" category.
