I would say Yay on most of your selections; once you finish Women Soccer Player I'd like to know what you thought of the movie. I'm assuming that the movie is about the great player from the China soccer team Sun Wen.

Good to know. Thanks for the heads up. Care to expand on that and bless us with a review?

Hi Guys, can anyone here help me out on this one movie...
I remember an old movie about a young Chinese man who married a Japanese girl. The girl would practice around the house tearing up the place. The husband and his wife would always fight with the conflict of which art is better, Chinese Kung Fu or Japanese Karate.
The girl goes back to Japan and the husband sends her mail in the form of a challenge to get her to come back to China. Only her Karate instructor gets the mail and sends a Japanese wrestler, a Swordsman, and himself a Ninja to fight the Chinese guy. Well anyways the Chinese guy wins over all three. Do you know of the movie. I've been looking for it for a very long time. I hope you guys can help me.

Thanks Vernie for the info. I searched for this title at dvdpricesearch.com but the only thing came up was "Queen of the East". Does anyone knows where I can purchase this title? Thanks again

maybe a decent price for shiri 2-disc SE DTS?

Hi, Some of the previous posts about SHIRI got my attention, so I looked around to buy it. At first, the only place I found it (in the U.S.), was on ebay, and the auction ended at $56, maybe because it was the only one for sale at the time (about a week ago). Anyway, I've done business with Pokerindustries.com before, so I checked their website, and they have it for $28.99. They also have free shipping on any order over $50 (priority mail), so I got a couple of other things I wanted.
Anyway, seems like a fair price for this version for those who don't shop in offshore stores yet.
I just thought I'd pass along the info, since the price seems pretty good in relation to the single disc version. I thought that if I liked the film a lot, I'd want to see the stuff available on the other disc, even though there's no subtitles on it.
If anyone who bought it at an HK website or a better source, please post what a decent price should be, including shipping. If it's a lot cheaper, I'll let a couple of friends know who are interested.
Thanks for all the info in this thread. I'm just a neophyte in the HK movie area, and have really enjoyed most of what I've seen.

Shiri pricing............

Poker sounds like a pretty decent price for an import.....

I'm in Korea and the 2 disc set sells for 27,000 won-thats approx $21 U.S.I myself bought it and love what they have got on there(although I understand Korean so maybe that changes things)The disc represents the directors version and he personally handled the transfer(I heard). There are trailers, music videos (short)deleted scene and lots of interviews and making ofs (no subtitles). It comes in a beautiful box and remains one of the best in my collection.
Maybe you should try a Korean online site...I guess Hong Kong would be 2nd best choice(maybe DDD house have it)..

Try http://coolstuffvideos.com/. I bought mine a few years ago from another online store that I couldn't recall. I believe they are all copies, not original, and the quality is poor. I would love to have this movie remastered in DVD. Right now I just have to settle for this poor copy.

Hi - I just wanted to sneak in and say that I watched Tetsuo II - Body Hammer tonight. It's from Japan. Quite a trippy film. I liked it. I'd go into more detail, but I've been told that my little reviews aren't welcome.

Anyway - Has anyone seen Tetsuo 1? I'm curious how that one compares and if anyone knows where I could find it on DVD.

THanks.

Well, if you liked Tetsuo 2, then you should really like Tetsuo 1. Its shorter and cheaper and in black and white, but it is better in my opinion (I've found I'm not alone with that opinion either). Tsukamoto kind of focused his concept a little more with the first film, the second one seemed a little forced as a feature. First rate, over the top, surrealism. The first one was put out on DVD a couple of years ago and should be pretty easy to find at most etailers. Check out Tokyo Fist too.

Hi, I was wondering if you guys could help me find one more movie.
It's a Kung Fu movie about the Tiger and Crane style of Kung Fu.
This boy learns Crane style from his mother who was a monk and Tiger style from his father who also was a monk.
Back in old China people learned only one straight fighting style. Anyways the boy fights this one fighter who was invincible. I can't remember if he was a bandit.
The boy beats him because he mixes the Tiger style with the Crane style and totally confuses the fighter. The boy killed him by getting on the guy's shoulders and gave him a strike to the top of his head (his gate). Seems the boy used to ride on his dad's shoulder's and play fight. In the movie there was a practice dummy that if you hit the correct points, little balls would drop showing you that the strike was done correctly.
Thanks again...!

Well I know you're not talking about Tai Chi II, but that's a good film with perhaps a similar spirit maybe? Anyway I liked it. I don't think I've seen the one you're talking about - when do you suppose it was made?

Also - I noticed that Tai Seng is putting out Deadful Melody with commentary by Ric Meyers and it's set to come out Aug 17th. I have this film on order, is there another DVD edition of this out? I'd like to get this edition and I hope they don't send me a previous version. Anyone know?

Yes, I've seen and own Tai Chi II. It's a decent flick in my opinion. Not sure when the other movie was made. Probably in the 70s...

Yeah, its been out for awhile, I rented it so I cant recall the HK company that put it out, but it was one of the lesser companies. Tai Seng will probalby just use the same transfer, slap thier name on it and add commentary. From what I recall the HK DVD transfer was, like the movie, decent but nothing to go ape about.

Gee, I wish I could help. It definitley smells of old school kung fu, but I cant recall it specifically. There are just so many Tiger and Crane style films. I would try looking around kung fu websites (hkmdb.com,or http://members.hometown.aol.com/_ht_...mtbrand=AOL_US ) and the imdb and try looking up films with Tiger and Crane in the title or mail the sitemasters and see if they can help.

Yes, you're talking about the 1977 Shaw Brothers Classic "Executioners from Shaolin", sometimes called "Executioners of Death", directed by Drunken Master 2 star and director Lau Kar Leung. Chen Kwan Tai stars as the Tiger style Shaolin student, and the story is based on the legend of how the White Eyebrow monk Bak Mei betrayed Shaolin Temple. Chen Kwan Tai battles Bak Mei, but is defeated, so he goes and trains every day for 10 years. He uses the bronze dummy you were talking about, which has metal balls that drop through channels of the dummy when struck correctly. His wife is a crane stylist, and she teaches their son her crane style along with the father's tiger style. Chen Kwan Tai goes back to fight Bak Mei again, but is killed. His son defeats Bak Mei with a mixture of Tiger and Crane. I think the son is played by Gordon Liu, but I'm not sure. I remember this movie pretty vividly as I saw it as a kid in the early 80's on TV, and it was the first Shaw Brothers KF movie I ever saw, and I"ve been hooked since . Unfortunately, I think this movie is only available via horrible bootleg videos. Here's a cool interview with the director who talks a little about this movie:

I'd love to hear your comments on "Electrical Girl". It has such a great cover, I've been tempted to order it. hkmdb.com doesn't have any reviews on it yet.

Wow - that's a new one - usually people request I keep my comments to myself. I plan to write up a review to the hkmdb once I've watched it. I'll probably share my thoughts here as well.

I also had Johnny throw in Bichunmoo on DVD, The Master with Jet Li, and Dr. Wai and The Scripture With No Words. He better send it soon or I'll just keep tacking stuff on to the order.

Miscellaneous Comments

Hi!

* the Old School list in the first post needs to have The Five Deadly Venoms. Not because of whether it is a good film or not, but simply because of its place in the history of Kung Fu movies. If someone were to watch only one Old School movie that did not star Bruce Lee, then this would be it.

* The film The Master Killer listed in the first post should have appended "(now sold on DVD as "Shaolin Master Killer)". BTW, this is probably the best Old School film, due to the very interesting training sequences that form the heart of the film (and it's nowheres as gory as the U.S. marketing title implies).

* I also quite liked Zu. I think it is important to have zero expectations of anything other than fun from this film, and then you will enjoy it.

* I recommend joining Netflix if you are interested in HK films. Everyone's taste is different, and if you spend US$10-$20 for a film that "everyone loves", you may be disappointed. And the same amount gets you a whole month of films at their "Lite" rate of $13.95 for 2 DVDs out. Having said this, sometimes I've ordered some of the US$5 DVDs from DDDHouse that I haven't seen yet.

* As previously mentioned, a way to see some of these films for free is to subscribe to the "Encore" package on your cable or satellite system (Dish Network has it for $4.99 per month or as part of the "Top 150" package). The "Encore Action" channel has recently shown The Legend, The Legend 2, Stormriders, Ghost in the Shell, Young Master, Snake and Crane Arts of Shaolin and The Heroic Trio, plus they had a Jackie Chan day with a bunch of more obscure, older and not highly regarded films of his.

* Despite the fact that I like Jet Li, I nevertheless greatly preferred Swordsman to Swordsman 2. The first film - directed by King Hu - is simply better written, better paced, and more coherent. The big deal about CTHD is that it is a very good movie even without the action scenes. So, I appreciate any HK film that at least has some of that quality. This is one reason I also liked The Bride with White Hair and Iron Monkey (1993) **, both of which have good direction and writing.

* Speaking of Jet Li, one of my favorite films of his is his first film, The Shaolin Temple. This is the most authentic Kung Fu film, as everyone in the film is a real martial artist, and no wires or other tricks were used. In addition, it was filmed at the actual Shaolin Temple. And, it has a coherent story line and some beautiful scenery. Be sure to get the Mei Ah version direct from DDDHouse (or other HK store) and not the US version which is worse quality, and pan and scan, but costs more.

* And, Brigitte Lin gave up acting a few years back to get married. She just had her second baby. The definitive web site for all things Brigitte Lin - including lots of information and reviews of all the films she's been in is:

http://www.brigittelin.com

** Note that there are two films called "The Iron Monkey", one is a "wire fu" movie from 1993 directed by Yuen Woo Ping, who did the choreography for CTHD and The Matrix, and another is a good, but not great Old School movie done in 1977.

Commentary?

Are there any HK DVD's with Chinese commentary? I'm trying to get some family relatives to appreciate DVD as a format. So far its been the "just like VHS but more convenient" attitude.

I have only been able to find Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury with a Cantonese commentary track by Donnie Yen. I do not have this DVD though. Is his commentary any good?
