Is there any truth to the rumor, though, that Tarantino has picked this film up to come out from his production company in the states? If so, that could slim our chances of a Criterion.

I just can't wait for this movie to be released! English subs have finally been confirmed, and according to DDDHouse, the extra's have English subtitles as well. That would be something, allthough it's kinda hard to believe.

This is not even a rumor (maybe now it is ), it is merely my wishful thinking . I did not know Tarantino's company has picked it up, thanks for the info mate.

Who in the world would come up with such a lame rumour?! Hello, Tarantino was the president of the jury - yes, the ones who snubbed 2046 out of ANY awards at Cannes. Do you really still think he would distribute the film?

And the chances of the film coming out via Criterion on DVD is akin to the chance of Ashlee Simpson winning fore Best Pop Vocal Performance at the Grammys.

2046 won't be coming out to the US for a while...ask 20th Century Fox why.

I don't recall where I read the Tarantino rumor now. I thought it was http://www.wongkarwai.net/, but I don't see it anywhere there now. Wherever it was, it was the only time I had seen it, hence my asking if anyone else had heard it.

Tarantino was not the only member of that jury. He is a big Wong Kar Wai fan. Chungking Express was distributed in the US through Tarantino's Rolling Thunder label.

They released In the Mood for Love, didn't they?

they've improved greatly since they started releasing Chinastar's movies a few years ago. so i wouldn't worry about their DVD quality if i were you.

Not everything that you see on wongkarwai.net is true - it's just a bunch of rants by overly rabid WKW fans.

It's not really my position to say anymore about the US release of 2046. After all, I technically work with, not for, them. But think about it - WKW signed an exclusive deal with 20th Century Fox Asia to develop a number of projects, including English-language ones (hence next year's production of THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI with Nicole Kidman). But the deal *may* also cover a certain recent film as well... After all, Fox had exclusive rights Asia-wide to 2046.

But it's best to just wait until press release is announced.

Tarantino was the PRESIDENT of the jury. He was single-handedly responsible for OLD BOY wining the Grand Jury Prize (the rest of the jury was not as keen as him). What makes you think that since he's a WKW fan, he's automatically going to like and distribute an unfinished film with missing CGI parts and unmastered music? (that was the version shown at Cannes).

Even in the country that worships WKW, like France, 2046 was a disappointment, both critically and box-office wise. Especially when compared to IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE.

I for one thought the film was very enjoyable. Even enduring the horrible PAL version (which I just had rented from Nicheflix) I found the movie captivating - the cinematography is simply jaw dropping.

The PAL edition BTW should be avoided like the plague - one needs to be a speed reader to be able to read the English subtltles. The 'FACE' logo with it's Chinese characters that fly across the screen is downright unbearable. Thank god the new editions come out tomorrow.

hhmmm

yesasia.com now lists the release date as 12/26. The web page listing of the film still shows the release date to be 12/10. However, when I look at the order details of my shipment, it lists the release date on that specific page as 12/26...I hope it is not being pushed back...

P.S. yesasia.com now states that it is "Ready, In Stock." Good stuff.

What makes you think that just because Tarantino didn't feel the movie deserved an award that year must mean that he hated it and never wants to see it distributed?

Though I think labelling the activity of the site as just "rants" is a bit of an overstatement, since many people over there enjoy discussing the movies, I believed that asking, "Hey, has anyone heard this rumor anywhere?" implied that I had accepted it as truth.

But thanks for the information nonetheless. The Fox connection makes sense, though excepting that, I don't think your theories about why Tarantino wouldn't import the film through his company, were it available, are that sound. Just because it wasn't necessarily his favorite movie at the Festival doesn't mean he wouldn't like it enough to be the American producer. As a filmmaker, he is also most likely used to seeing unfinished films and looking beyond that. And love him or hate him, I doubt he'd weigh performance in other countries that much either. The man likes what he likes, and I respect him for that even if I don't always agree.

They're not "theories" -they're actual accounts of people who were at the 2046 post-screening party at Cannes this year. And yes, these people happen to be my friends, and people I work with. Hong Kong is a small place, and the film circle is even smaller!

All I'm saying is, it is possible that no one else even got a chance to consider distrib rights for 2046 due to "1st look options". And 2046 was not even officially shown for North american distrib consideration until TIFF.

I'm not going to say anymore. You guys should just wait for a press release from the appropriate NA distrib. It is pointless speculating.

PS. Haven't you noticed that 2046 has not had its North American premiere yet? It wasn't shown at either Toronto or NYFF! Hmmmm....

Just to remind you guys about the Cannes issue...WKW delayed the screening of 2046, and I believe was the first filmmaker to do so. That didn't sit well with many people. One of the jury members I believe went on the record saying "Does he think he's better than Truffault? Godard?" or something to that effect.

Politics had a huge part in 2046 getting snubbed and Michael Moore winning. But don't assume that people weren't pretty pissed off that WKW delayed the screening for 2046.

My "2046" order with Yesasia just went to "in-stock". Hopefully that means they'll be sending it out soon.

Quick question for anyone here..

I've heard of 3 versions (1-disc, 2-disc, 2-disc limited edition). Cant find any info on the 'limited edition' though (Other than it being the 2-disc set.), anyone know if there is indeed 3 of them, and if so, whats in the limited edition?

Also, going by this image:

It had 3 DVD Covers.. Are these all random, or does each represent a different version?

Wow, cool, you write for onipress!

Back OT.

The only HK LE I've heard of is the 2 discer bundled with the OST. I'm not sure if this is a bundle e-tailers have put together or whether it's an offical one though.

Just got mine at the store today.

I got the 'special edition' one (And it has the cover of the largest-image on that picture I posted a few replies up), I was hoping for some of the others like:

It had 5 postcards inside, 2 discs, and a slipcase (The cards/slipcase are a rough sort of material (Almost like sandpaper) opposed to a thin paper/plastic most use.

Finally, the extras (like the 35-40 min behind the scenes) ARE Subtitled in english.

So, what's the PQ like? Is it a quality transfer?
