If that's all you want and you don't care about extras, the HK 1-disc versions should be fine.

CD-Wow has the HK DVDs available separately for $9.95 shipped each.

If each of those points are key otherwise it's a no buy, then I agree with Jay G's answer. :)

BTW, not that I need it or anything, but does the single disc of part 3 include the Director's Cut or the theatrical cut?

BuckNaked2k 02-23-07 11:42 AM

JayG: Thanks. My order is placed, and I await impatiently.

Running Man: Running Time: 118 minutes. What does that indicate?

riotinmyskull 02-24-07 09:10 AM

118 min = director's cut

That is the mega 8-disc set which is OOP, and much sought-after by collectors, thus the $125 used opening pricepoint.

xage 02-25-07 03:32 PM

BuckNaked2k, thats not the mega 8 disc oop. Its only 6discs

BGMAT, The one pictured and you posted from Amazon is not the best option. And if money is not an issue why ask for comparison for the economicaly Dragon Dynasty release?

Anyways, this is the best option out there for Infernal Affairs Trilogy.

I see. How much would that OOP big fella fetch nowadays?

xage 02-25-07 09:05 PM

It averages at around $200 ....

Mmmmm, pricey.

I went with the single disc editions since it seems that all of the extras lacked English subtitles. If one were so inclined to go for the 6 disc set, there are still some in stock for under $40 US:

Infernal Affairs Box Set

That pretty much meets my requirements. I have to scrounge up $45 or so to buy that thing.

Wildo1966 02-26-07 11:37 AM

Don't waste $200 on that overseas crap....Buy the new release set and you will be fine....

lol. That "crap" has the 5 1/2 hour cut of Infernal Affairs that you're beloved US version seemed to have left out of their "set". I have a small import store, so I have sold (and own) the 8 disc and the 6.

The way I see it, I buy a "set" to get features and items I can't get from the single disc versions. The 5.5 hour cut of Infernal (which is a remix/blend of all 3 films) is the ONLY REASON to own an Infernal Box set IMO.

Is it worth $200? I don't know, but you get that 5.5 hour cut which is essential, or why even buy the other sets? What better "extra" is there than a 5.5 hour cut of the move you just purchased? A few interviews? lol

Please don't mislead people into thinking the "oversea's" is "crap". The truth is if you would have purchased the 8 disc when it came out like the rest of the world (instead of waiting for the remake to come out) then it would have cost a lot less.

The reason it is $200 now is because people who follow this series understand how valuable and important that 5.5 hour cut is, as it is NOT released anywhere else in the world

And yes, there are English sub's for that movie

Feel free to buy the R1, but don't suggest the 8 disc is "crap" because it has more then your set and costs more.

I have seen Infernal 1,2,3 all once each (#1 twice). I have watched the 5.5 hour cut 4 times. It's what made the "set" for me.

The 5 hour cut can be purchased separately from the box set.

DDDHouse has it for $22:
http://www.dddhouse.com/v3/product_d...ProductID=4491

HKFllix as a Thai release of it for about $15:
http://www.hkflix.com/xq/asp/filmID....qx/details.htm

The quality of the combined edit of the films has been questioned recently, with some calling it crudely edited. It apparently spoils certain events before they happen due to the inclusion of certain intertitles.

The new US R1 set isn't without its flaws either though, since apparently the disc for the first film contains inaccurate subtitles.

Wildo1966 02-26-07 12:19 PM

Sorry, with the majority of imports that come from overseas being bootlegs I would NEVER spend that kind of money on a cheap inferior set. You can keep the junk, I prefer REAL authentic US region 1...

That's what the American studios what you to believe.

BuckNaked2k 02-26-07 12:25 PM

Now, now, let's not get too excited here.

I think it's fallacious to call overseas releases "crap" and suggest that one buy the R1 Dragon Dynasty boxset instead.

As noted in an earlier posts, all the HK Mega Star releases have a DTS soundtrack, not to mention the proper subtitles on Disc 1. All are Region Free, so you can play them on any DVD player. Plus, at $9.95 each, shipped, how can you go wrong?

While the 8-disc set is an awesome trophy if you are a collector or a completist, I must take exception on two points:

1. That the 5 1/2 hour cut is "essential" is up for debate. Earlier posts have cited its poor editing, allowing the "prequel" to show spoilers from the earlier film(s).

2. That the 5 1/2 hour cut is available only by purchasing the 8-disc set is untrue, as it is currently available from DDDHouse at a reasonable price:

DDDHouse

I understand people's opinion about oversea's imports...But I always thought that authentic dvds were all region coded, this dddhouse set they are offering is region free which IMO is not authentic....I am just speaking from experience with the Infernal Affairs US set, the picture is top notch and from the sounds of it much better than the import set...

That cheap, inferior set was about $90 USD when I pre-ordered it months in advanced.

Sorry, you missed out. :D

dleedlee 02-26-07 12:35 PM

Does anyone know who actually created the chronological cut? The original filmmakers or MegaStar? I remember hearing that it was a MegaStar creation.

I ordered my Mega Star one-disc DVDs from CDWow. This is a very reputable company which would never risk selling bootlegs.

As for region-free, who knows? Only Disc 1 is listed as "all-region":

Infernal Affairs

The other two are listed as Region 3 NTSC, but by all accounts, they were manufactured as "all region":

IA2
IA3

That's not true even for US releases. Criterion has released a number of all-region DVDs, and in fact prefer to release all-region when they can. I own an authentic UK DVD of the movie Drive that is all-region as well. The stores cited in this thread are all legitimate retailers that sell only authentic DVDs.

Hong Kong releases have historically been more lax on DVD region coding their movies than other countries. It's only more recently that some of the higher-profile releases with international appeal have had region-coding.

So in summary, a release being all-region does not automatically make it a bootleg.

No problem. I'll keep the junk, you can keep the ignorace. lol

I suppose Wildo1966 hasn't come across my comments about the US IA set I made not too long ago.
