I saw a copy of the movie at Kim's in nyc, but I don't know if it was the same version you're talking about. I'm waiting for the enevitable 3 or 4 versions so I can choose the best one.

So... I've been looking and looking for a comparison review of the DVDs that are out for this and can't find any. I'd like to know if I should just go ahead and get the stupid R1 release or wait for an R3 Korean SE - when will that happen? Someone's gotta know something. Speak up.
I haven't gotten VisitorQ yet. Suppose if I pick up the R1 of Suicide Circle, I'll have to pick that up too. Someone please advise me. I've wanted to see this really bad, but wanted to wait for a good DVD. Is the R1 cut at all? Is it better to get the "Unrated" version (obviously)?

trigger,
the suicide club r1 dvd released by TLA has a really bad transfer. I mean, really bad. The darks are horrible, you see a lot of digital specs in dark scenes, which is a large portion of the movie. I've seen 3rd generation VHS that look better than it. Overall is a great movie and judging from the stuff you comment on, I feel that you will like it. We could only hope for a better transfer from somewhere else. There is a review of it here.

I don't know if you were asking about this or the VisitorQ. I can't comment on the visitorQ since I have not seen it but I'm sure is up my alley as well.

The DVD is not the best. I liked the movie a lot, but what Buddha says is true. It is a pretty crappy transfer. I heard horror stories about the transfer so when I watched it I was relieved to see it wasn't as bad as I had expected, but it is pretty damn bad. I was just happy to be able to pick up a legit R1 release of this though.
The Visitor Q disc is nice. I have no complaints with it at all. Definitely pick it up.

yeah. some say the colors are mutted, but my real problem is with the dark scenes, rather than be black is like a grayish green with a lot of digital artifacts, is pretty bad and this is comming from a person who's not very picky as some in here could be. I was upset at how bad it looked. The reviewer said that its image looked like one of those $5 imports I would say I've seen some better transfers than those. Is like a bad VCD on a big screen. Again, for me is just in the dark scences I'm fine with the rest as I said, I'm not too picky. Even with this I feel that the movie is good enough to recomend the TLA R1. Is TLA this bad with their DVDs? I want to get "Entre tus piernas" (between your legs) or whatever the title is, but if its going to be like this, I might just get the R2 from spain. Any ideas? thanks.

As to Between Your Legs- take your pick- both the Spanish and R1 releases are non-anamorphic. The TLA release is not a total disaster but is far from being average either esp. as far as color saturation etc.
The best available verison is in France which is anamorphic but only offers French subs. If you speak English only and have to have the film then I would go for the cheaper TLA copy. With that said this is a great, great film....Victoria Abril is charming!!

Thanks pro. Spanish is my first language so I don't really care about subtitles although they are nice to have. Are the french subs. optional or are they burned in, etc. i would find it too distracting if they were not removable. Any extras? same question about the subs for any extra. Thanks for your help and info.
As to not to hijack this threat. any other releases or future releases for Suicide Club. We now know about the R2J release and of course the R1. anywhere else?

ok (I will answer qickly before we get criticized about hi-jacking the thread):
If Spanish is your nativue language then you have quite a few options:
dvdfr. does not indicate forced subs:
http://www.dvdfr.com/dvd/dvd.php?id=505
extras:
Filmographies.
Bande-annonce (trailer)
Making of
Critiques
according to dvdrama the image is supposed to be SUPERB!!
("La copie est absolument superbe et d’une définition exemplaire.")!!!

if you like Victoria Abril I would also recommend Dont Tempt Me

as to Suicide Circle- I dont have any info regarding a future release.

Thanks for the advice on Suicide Circle... I went ahead and picked it up anyway even though the transfer sucks... I picked up VisitorQ too. I figure I waited a year (looking at the date this thread was started) for this movie to come out on a good DVD... maybe by ordering it that will make it come out in R3 or something - like how I can make it rain just by washing my car.
I'll post a review of it after I get it.

It had some good moments, but the next BR? Not even close.

It sounds like my type of movie - I didn't mean to imply that I'm just into movies for shock value and that I'm too dumb to appreciate cerebral films or whatever. When I started this thread a year ago, I had just barely heard about the film and it was compared to BR. I liked BR on many levels and to be quite honest, least of which was the gore. It reminded me of a Stephen King novella called The Long Walk. I'm not saying I'm a movie snob either cuz I like really dumb crappy movies too.

I felt that BR and SC are similar only in that they are kids in uniforms and the social comentary although different in each film, otherwise they are very different. And for people that look at BR for the gore, there is more more to it than that. IT does have some very serious critique on society and the state even friendship or lack there of, at least in the first act.
pro- thanks for the help/info. I will definately take all this into consideration.

The movie completely fell apart towards the end of the movie (right the very last reel or so). The sideways trip into the Rocky Horror Bollwing Alley was where the film came off the rails for me. After that the plot just went all mushy.

This is nowhere near as good as Battle Royale, The Ring, Kairo, Cure, Visitor Q, Audition, or just about any Japanese New Wave film I've seen.

trigger,
I highly recomend Cure. It has great atmosphere and the actor who plays the lead detective did a great job. There's mix reviews about it, even here (dvdtalk) there are 2 opposite reviews but I thought it was a very good and solid movie. I've seen Kairo by the same director but I liked Cure so much more that it. I don't want to say to much so as not to ruin anything but I guess you could read the two reviews that are up and go from there.

I bought Suicide Circle at Best Buy and enjoyed it overall. I do agree with it becoming slugging and not good during the last part of the movie. The movie had me interested during 90% of the movie but I lost interest during the end and during the whole bowling alley stuff (which I didn't really think was necessary).

Finally watched it tonight... I have to agree with the consensus that the David Bowiekasaki character wasn't needed. I also think they dropped the ball a bit with the resolution/explaination. Otherwise, it was pretty cool. The DVD wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.
Also watched Visitor Q - holy crap... what a disgusting freak film. I liked it. He puts stuff on film that make me go "how the hell did he get this on film?" and then I go "why did he get this on film?"

Pulled out this out thread 'cause I didn't want to start a new one. I guess it really is happening in Japan. Found this story on it today.
