Suicide Circle

There was a thread on it last week, but it got squashed because of bootleg talk... this film is not officially available on DVD. Don't discuss the ebay bootlegs or any bootlegs so we can keep this discussion open. :)

So this film is being talked about like it's the next Battle Royale. I've now read a few reviews and it doesn't sound like it's much like BR at all apart from being a bit sensationalistic. I'm excited to see it. If you've seen it, give us your thoughts (exclude any mention of bootleg DVDs or quality thereof) on it.

Here's some links...

Good review and general info

So the wait for the DVD begins... :)

Suicide Circle review

The movie is very weird, it absolutely, without a doubt has some of the nastiest scenes you've seen in a movie in a long time but by the end of the movie you do have an appreciation for life, which the movie stresses in a weird, roundabout way. But those looking for a cut and dried explanation by the end of the movie will be disappointed. Definately see the movie for the out of the blue Rocky Horror style music number in the middle of the movie featuring some JP David Bowie called Rolly sing in english, a very weird, hypnotic number. Worth a view but nowhere near Battle Royale in terms of significance or sympathy for the characters, more sensational if anything else.

My Collection- since i see everyone else doing this, i tried it and loved cataloging my titles. http://www.dvdprofiler.com/mc.asp?alias=harosa&type=A

Trigger

The movie is no way another Battle Royale

Although it is a pretty good movie on its own and none of the scenes seemed as nasty as Harosa implied,to me at least

One thing I really liked was Ryo Ishibashi
He was great in Audition and I think even better in this
The guy's potrayal of a father in SC and Audition make me wish he was my dad ;) :)

Things I really didn't like how weird the movie gets about 2/3's in and the fact that in terms of violence and bloodiness the director really blew his load in the beginning and nothing amounts to or tops it after that

Trigger 03-12-03 12:00 PM

Yeah - I've read a few places where it's described as the complete opposite of BR... however, people will continue to make the comparison.

harosa 03-12-03 10:17 PM

Trust me, this movie is gory

Not as nasty as i say? Slax must really be desensitized.lol. I dont want to go into specifics to avoid spoilers but there are definate shocks in the movie.

omi 03-13-03 12:08 AM

I thought it had great promise in the beginning, but toward the end nothing made sense. I'm left with more questions than answers. I would say good effort, and I'm sure there will be some kind of American remake.

Now one thing this movie has in comin with BR aside from a massive body count of children is their will NEVER be an American remake of this movie out of fear of the ramifications

harosa-i'm a bit of a Takashi Miike fan so yes I have been really desensitized  :p

i don't see how a mother lactating profusely in the kitchen as her son watches, while out in the yard the father is getting his F on with a corpse, could desensitize anyone.

:D

ahahaha OMG that's great, gave me a good laff
But it was the Visitor watching the mom and then after that the son swam around in the lactated milk :D

Yep, you are right. It was the Visitor watching the mom, and the son later swam in it.

Trigger, it is a great movie. Obviously not for everyone but good movie nonetheless :D

I have the Region 1 Media Blaster's DVD of it, and have no complaints. I am not even aware of another Region of it with eng subs, there probably is one out there though. Oh, it has the typical japanese pixelization over the make naughty bits, other than that no censorship that I am aware of.

It is not like any of his other films (though which of his are like the others? ;) ), so it might not be what you expect of it. It was made on a low budget and is all digital, obviously so. I am sure there are other threads of it in the DVD Talk section (since its R1).

Shagrath 03-15-03 01:14 AM

I watched Visitor Q a few days ago, and loved it. It's a very strange and surreal story, but it does end up being very touching in the end.. If that's possible.

Reality mirrors film. Seems strangers are meeting on the internet in Japan for purposes of group suicide. http://msnbc.com/news/922190.asp

When I saw that posted on MSN last night my first thought was this movie. Pretty crazy.

What are the specs on it? Worth picking up or waiting for the R1?

Suicide Circle coming to Region 1

Suicide Circle is coming to Region 1 on July 15 via TLA Releasing

as Suicide Club

Here is the website

www.tlareleasing.com

They are a Philadelphia based company that falls under the heading of TLA Entertainment ( TLA Video is a part of them as well as Theater of the Living Arts)

DaJosha 06-18-03 03:44 AM

awesome! i was pretty happy with the bootleg but im definitely gonna upgrade. i just hope theres some special features.

Bilbo Baggins 06-22-03 06:13 PM

Hmm...Anybody know what happened to the July 15th region 1 release? It looks like it's not coming out anymore. If you click the link on the Suicide Club movie it takes you to an info page that says this title is not available for purchase. Unlike the other ones which tell you when it will be available. If you go through the releases by date it is no longer listed as coming out on the 15th anymore. Bummer.

paradicelost 07-22-03 12:14 AM

I just rented this last week(though i'm not sure which dvd it was because the menu does say suicide circle not suicide club). The opening scene was the first scene in a film that made me come very close to throwing up. It was a great film. I can't comment on the comparison betweenn SC and BR though. I bought BR last week but i haven't had a chance to watch it as of yet.
