Lionsgate Limited - limited-edition releases curated from Lionsgate’s library

Probably mentioned elsehwere, but Lionsgate has started a direct to consumer site for exclusive release.
https://lionsgatelimited.com/

There is a good 30-min or so interview with a rep from Lionsgate about what they plan to be doing with this line:

Released or up for pre-order so far:

I’m torn on ordering The Conversation and The Third Man, just in the event that less pricey standard editions follow. But I’m sorely tempted! You’re Next is the only title I’m mixed on upgrading to UHD.

Forgive my cluelessness, but haven’t there already been 4K sets of a bunch of these? There seems to be previous (?) releases on Amazon for a few, and new ‘standard’ editions for JACKIE BROWN and the KILL BILLS streeting next week. Doesn’t seem like there’s much new to these ‘Select’ titles besides packaging. Maybe I’ve just seen all of these and many other Lionsgate movies reissued so many times – and ending up in sales and bargain bins – that I can’t spot substantial differences anymore.

AFAIK, all of these titles have either previously gotten a UHD release (in several cases only abroad) or have a concurrent standard edition. But this is, I believe, the least expensive way to get The Third Man in UHD for the moment, as the Studiocanal LE is even pricier.

That Reservoir Dogs steelbook is identical to the original release, with the slipcover that removes his ear, maybe they tinted it a little pink this time.

Lazy effort to recycle their catalog. They want that sweet direct-to-consumer collectibles market while cutting out middleman retailers.

Yes, like Adam said, they either have or are getting standard releases or were only available in the UK (like The Conversation and The Third Man). These seem to be, so far, limited edition steelbooks.

Based on that interview, it sounds like they have broader plans.

I believe Jackie Brown and Kill Bill are new to 4K. I picked up the steelbooks as I assume this is the last time I will be buying these films on physical media. Unless The Whole Bloody Affair miraculously gets a release.

They are... but there are standard editions available through retailers.

The Den of Thieves 2-pack was great. The first film has a featurette with the director and how he went in and worked on the 4K HDR grading and mixing the new Atmos soundtrack. They worked on that back in December, so must have been right when the second one was being prepped for theaters.

I remember Way of the Gun being a pretty solid movie. Though I distinctly remember picking it up from the Walmart dump bin for practically nothing. Now we all have to pay $30 something for it on UHD.

I compared the bonus content from my 2021 Studio Canal Basic Instinct 4K and the listed content on this new Lionsgate 4K.

Basically it's 90% the same. Even the transfer is the same. The only major difference is a 1993 legacy commentary from Verhoeven and a few minor featurettes from the laser disc and special edition VHS. Nothing that I really have to double dip for. And $35 is not cheap for a double dip.

The Studio Canal copy of Basic Instinct only has a 5.1 remix where the surround channels are erroneously turned off. Lionsgate also includes the original 2.0 mix that is supposedly much better. FWIW.

Looks like Daybreakers is getting an LL edition on 4K, which no doubt is getting sourced from the upcoming Umbrella 4K package.

One of my most sought after movies in 4k is The Descent. I think it'll get a 4k release but I hope it's not a Lionsgate Limited exclusive or something like that.

I'm with you, although The Descent does seem like a likely target for Lionsgate Limited.

It looks like Frailty is up next for the line.

The Descent is too popular among horror movie fans you would think it would get a wide 4k release.
