Laserdisc manufacture requires clean room conditions. Unlike vinyl, it isn't something a group of enthusiasts or some small-time outfit can buy equipment for and set up in a warehouse somewhere. There are no facilities left in the world capable of pressing a Laserdisc. The few optical disc plants left during the decline of physical media are backlogged with DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K orders. And the tooling required for Laserdisc was scrapped long ago.

Even at its height in the mid-1990s, Laserdisc was a tiny niche of the home video market. The majority of the public had never heard of it. Even if some crazy marketing person at a studio thought it would be a fun idea, there simply isn't enough demand to justify the expense and effort of making such a thing.

The best a collector might hope for is a Blu-ray or 4K release inside an oversized "retro" LD-styled jacket, similar to the "Big Sleeve Edition" Blu-rays that were released in the UK a bunch of years ago. With the resurgence of vinyl, printing the jackets shouldn't be a problem.

I won't be buying that VHS but do wish that cover art was used for the 4K, even if just as a slipcover.

I didn’t even see the VHS go up for pre-order and now it’s apparently out and sold out. Gimmicky release but I’d have bought it.

I think the SteelBook cover is too busy. Too bad the VHS artwork wasn't used for the standard 4K release.

That looks more like cover art for Stranger Things. It’s far too cluttered for me.

It seems like Disney/Fox price gouges on these steelbook releases so the standard 4k edition will be just fine once I pick this up.

I have every other Alien movie on physical media (mainly due to box sets), but having a hard time justifying this one.

Because the discs are too expensive or because you didn't like this movie that much? Or both?

Definitely price. I liked the movie a lot until the last act and think it's the best one after the original two.

The SteelBook artwork just looks like the same generic template for any given Star Wars sequel/spin-off.

I was thinking they could create a non-functional LaserDisc complete with the cardboard cover. The functional 4K/Blu-ray disc could be set inside a cut-out centre of the 12" disc by way of a clear plastic insert with a hub?

I wouldn't buy it personally, but someone probably would!

I watched my 4K disc yesterday and it was great. Glad I went with OrbitDVD since Amazon had delayed it for a couple of weeks.

I think because of all the bad Alien spin-offs and awful games over the years, I like it better over a more generic Alien image like the VHS cover.

I also agree that the 4K cover art is pretty fugly. Looks too much like the old school floating head DVD covers of the early 2000s. Wish they had used the VHS cover or done something unique like they would for a Criterion release.

I don't care much for it either, but I suppose at least it's not a plain black cover with nothing but the movie title printed on it, which seems to be the new genius marketing move by studios these days (e.g. Constantine 4K, and the Pulp Fiction 30th Anniversary LE).

What are you talking about? The Constantine SteelBook also has the DC bullet on the upper left.

I stand corrected.

Seriously, though, as a longtime SteelBook collector, I don't understand the point of releasing a SteelBook with a plain black cover that has no art on it. It's just the laziest design ever.

I do lean toward more minimalist designs, but yeah that one is pretty absurd.

It worked out well for AC/DC, Metallica, and Spinal Tap!

Well maybe not Spinal Tap...

They failed to make the cover blacker than black.

They should have used Vantablack or Blackest Black.
