That would make for a cool store exclusive bonus item. Not so much as a separate release.

I’ve been trying to figure out where that’s gonna be sold, but it appears it hasn’t been announced yet. It’ll be gone right away I’m guessing.

I'm curious if the VHS is playable if you still own a VCR.

I think I read in one of the articles that it will be fully operational.

It needs to be a limited edition as the only people who will buy it are suckers because of FOMO.

Yes pan/scan and fully functional.

The “fully functioning VHS tape” is meant to celebrate 45 years since the Alien franchise first (chest) burst into theaters, 20th Century Studios wrote in a release emailed to The Verge. It’ll present the movie, appropriately, in a 4:3 aspect ratio (hopefully with well-done pan-and-scan). It also comes in a slick, vintage-style sleeve.

Buying a brand new Pan & Scan VHS in 2024 is a wild choice… good for folks who want to scratch that itch, I guess.
Too bad they’re not selling them at rental store prices.

I’ll pass on buying the VHS.

No way. There is a legitimate cult audience for VHS out there. It might be tiny, and it might seem crazy, but it's definitely there.

All of the used music/movie places around here now keep shelves with some VHS in stock. There's a ton of stuff that's never been released on any other physical format and isn't available on streaming. But VHS was massive, almost any kind of title was able to be released, especially the adult stuff.

Not VHS, but I'm in a Laserdisc group on Facebook where quite a few people still actively watch movies on old CRT TVs, and often prefer pan & scan. To me, that seems to actively defeat the whole reason I got into Laserdisc in the first place back in the day - that it was the highest-quality medium available at the time and most releases were widescreen. But, to each their own.

The VHS release is kind of cool. I’d try for it if I can find it and it’s not outrageously expensive.

Oh believe me I know following Vinegar Syndrome and their Degausser line and the people who will pay $60 for those tapes. Those are suckers.

There are many people who would say anyone buying movies on any physical media these days are suckers. ;) It's all a matter of perspective.

so, this is really a VHS tape, not just retro packaging that has been seen for a few other releases? who even has a VHS player anymore?

If you look at any of the retro video groups on Facebook, there are actually quite a few people who still watch movies on VHS and old CRT televisions.

Uh, I have 4 of them. And MiniDisc, DAT, Cassette, and Hi8 decks (not handheld players). And a LaserDisc player.

Would it even be possible to create a new limited edition LaserDisc release?

I would wager the Alien: Romulus release on VHS is more of a collectible like an action figure than an actual release. Most people who buy then will probably leave them sealed.

I could almost see this becoming a thing. We're thick in 80s Generation X nostalgia right now.

On some level, I'd almost be curious to see what a modern CGI-filled movie with digital color grading would look like on VHS.

I've often wondered if there might be a market, albeit a small one, for new LaserDiscs. Stuff like the LOTR/Hobbit films, Stranger Things, the Star Wars prequels and sequels, the MCU films, pretty much anything with a decent-sized cult following that came out after DVD killed LD.

The Steelbook looks to be a Wal-Mart exclusive? It's $54.95 now. Hope the price drops.
