Many people may disagree with me here, but I liked it better in the older versions of the films where we never actually fully saw V'Ger.

Maybe it's because I first saw TMP when I was a youngster, but the idea that there was this giant ship out there in space, hidden in a giant cloud of some kind, and you couldn't tell where the cloud ended and the ship began was kind of horrifying.

I get that, it’s a good reading of what happens but I also think there’s a point to seeing that there’s real thing in the middle of that cloud that’s just trying to find the meaning of life.

Star Trek The Motion Picture, The Director’s Edition 4K is now up on Paramount plus. It’s 136 minutes. You have to search for it and it has the special thumbnail. The theatrical cut is also in 4K.

If you don’t subscribe to Paramount plus, then you have to wait until September for the physical media release.

I’ll try to watch it on my next day off. But I have to see this on my 4K TV, not iPad. Otherwise that defeats the whole purpose of it.

Paramount sure didn't bother to go out of its way to promote that 4K Director's Cut. Not on the home page, not even on the "recently added" list. The only way (as of this post) to find it is via a manual text search.

Looking forward to giving the remastered version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture a watch sometime soon. I’ll definitely grab the disc once it’s out too.

Watched it last night... stunning in 4K (I skipped watching the regular version in 4K).

I'll definitely be grabbing the 4K disc when it's released this fall.

I was blown away by the before and after shots in the trailer. This is going to look amazing!

I've been waiting for this one for a while. It's funny, the farther we get from 1979 when it came out the better the movie seems to get. Especially the Director's Edition. I remember being slightly disappointed in 1979, but now I love this thing.

Does V'Ger still shoot first?

Sat down to watch this over the weekend and every time I watch I love it a little bit more. It still needed like 6 more months of script work before filming even started, but I think we've finally reached a point with this film where we can more easily recommend it to Trek newbies. There are still some shots of the crew staring at V'Ger as they travel through, but the new shots of V'Ger help sell the idea that they truly are in wonder of what's going on.
There are several little audio edits, and I think the scene with Spock in sickbay has some of the SLV dialog restored that should never have been cut from the theatrical in the first place.

There's still some lines of ADR that sound like they were recorded in the back of a truck, but I don't think there's much more to be done at this point.

It was said by some when the 2001 edition was released, and now it's even better, but the pacing is now at a point where the old "The Motion-less Picture" moniker can be rightfully dropped. This is not a whiz-bang action film; it's always been a more thoughtful sci-fi quest type of story, but now it clips along at a good flow.

I will be purchasing the disc version on Day One.

I do hope they manage to improve the rotoscope job for the "Spock/Kirk/Bones meet in the observation lounge" scene before it hits UHD.

Poor Dr. McCoy's nose seems to disappear quite a bit.

Yeah, that stood out. I know the previous angle wasn't quite right, but if you can't get that bluescreen'ed out and not lose facial features, then just leave it alone.

I don’t know why they broke up the TOS movies like that. Just a really odd way of releasing them. Should have just been all six in a set and then the four TNG movies in a separate set.

I feel like they know they should have done them them six and four but the later movies were probably taking too long and they wanted a product out.

The first box with 1 and then the Genesis trilogy is the best way to do it if you have to do it. I would have expected 5, 6 and 7 but 5, 6 and the TMP DE isn’t that bad. I’ll buy it for sure, I’ve never minded part 5, I had it on VHS back in the day and watched it pretty often.

I want singles of the first four. My iTunes copies of 1-4 were upgraded to 4K, and I can live without TMP, TSFS, and TVH on disc. But give me KHAAAAAAAAN! Maybe they'll do the original artwork on a steenbook like they did for Indy.
