Yeah, I've been anticipating the mega set since the first rumors and now it looks I'm just going to need to buy one of the existing Blu sets to get the extendeds and the extras. All I have now are the theatrical Blus of all six films, I let go of my DVDs in anticipation of this being an actual ultimate set.

This Fall season is going to expensive enough without this, so i'm glad this turned out to be a letdown. The original 4k sets with the added Appendices DVDs and i'm all set.

I'm happy with my decision just to buy the 4K Extended box set for Lord of the Rings. I don't need that overpriced monstrosity of a complete set.

Is that Canne Presentation going to have the long rumored deleted footage that didn't make it into extended editions? I might consider a purchase but I might just get the releases that are already out to save money. I'm guessing that cast reunion could be found on YouTube at some point.

So just from reading the comments, not putting the Apendices documentary series for LOTR is a deal breaker for this pretty expensive set?
I'm not surprised there isn't a ton of new bonus content. The movies have been out for years and there isn't really anything new or insightful that could be filmed. But, I get that not putting the most comprehensive documentary series on the making of the movies in this "Ultimate" set is pretty poor.
I watched all 3 LOTR appendices documentaries on DVD many many years ago. I don't think I ever watched The Hobbit Apprendices series even though I do own the theatrical and extended cuts on BD.
The documentaries are super long and exhausting (2-2 1/2 hours each) It's not something IMO that has much replay value either.

There's no need to include the Appendices. If you've bought either the dvd or bluray releases of LOTR extended editions you would have already have them by now.

Yeah I have the Appendices on the Extended BD box set (and they are on DVD) and I still own the original Extended Edition DVD box set that also had them. It's not like I never had them.
It's not a complete deal breaker for me. However, I do see that the price point might be a turn off for some. I mean you really have to love these movies to re-invest more money into them for a potential 3rd or 4th dip.
and I admit I haven't re-watched any of my LOTR and The Hobbit BDs in many years. I don't think I even watched The Hobbit Appendices documentaries on the extended edition BDs. It's such a huge time investment when so many new things keep coming out. So that's the problem with re-investing in older movies sometimes, just simply don't know if you have the time to watch them. I don't want to pay $200 for a shelf ornament.

I never finished the appendices on the DVD sets and I let them go earlier this year thinking they would be on this ultimate set.
So now I'm just going to watch for a cheap used Blu set now, hopefully some folks will be unloading theirs.

I imagine that if you held off the last 4k release, you were expecting to not have to keep the older editions just to have the extras. There's really no reason to buy this release unless you need to have blu-rays of the remaster in addition to the 4k or you need that bonus disc. You'd be better off buying last year's releases at a much cheaper price.

I wonder when those might go on sale again? Granted, if one were to buy the 4K sets of both Hobbit and LOTR at Amazon's current price it's still less than this set.

I’m surprised their girlfriends would be cool with them taking off across Europe like that.

The Remastered Blu-rays are appearing to get there own releases on November 16th of both the theatrical and extended editions. The Extended edition sets will have all the appendices on DVD. I don't think I can justify spending money on the huge 6 movie set so I might just do the 4k LOTR set once I have a 4k blu-ray player.

I didn’t realize that a separate Blu-ray release of the new master was coming, I might have been interested in that.
But I just found the old Blu box at Goodwill for $5 so I think I’ll be sticking with that.

Now, the problem will be finding a good deal on the Hobbit trilogy box to match it.

Yeah, already started scanning them. I'm hoping more 4K upgraders will sell theirs off and flood the market.

The 9-disc set of LOTR Theatrical and Extended is on sale at amazon for $69.99:
I was curious about the Cannes presentation reel on the new set, and I came across this writeup of it from back when it was first shown. Based on the breakdown of scenes, it sounds like it was a heavily abridged version of FOTR up through Mines of Moria, followed by a montage of shots/scenes from the rest of the trilogy. It doesn't sound like there's any footage that's missing from the final films, aside from maybe some lines of dialogue.

The ultimate edition set is currently on sale for $169.99 at Amazon.
But after watching this review and unboxing, I decided it’s not worth it. As previously mentioned, the only bonus material is the one bonus disc. The movies only have the commentary tracks. The guy who reviewed it says it’s a disappointment for something that’s supposed to be “Ultimate”

One article:

. Director Peter Jackson even foresees an ultimate collector’s edition with more deleted scenes and a blooper reel.
