Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread

I'm aware as I've worked in both big box retail in store and in a warehouse.

I know some companies will sometimes get entire batches of new product due to imperfections from the manufacturer, then sell the imperfect copies at a later date for a hefty discount instead of destroying them, but may have to wait a certain amount of time for logistical or contractual reasons.
Yeah, I was going to say something similar. Even with a "limited edition," the label will need to keep extra copies on hand for a time for the purposes of offering exchanges on defective or damaged product.

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread

It’s also worth nothing that VS sent out a memo a couple of weeks ago announcing their massive new central warehouse in Connecticut, and the closure of operations in Colorado, so that may have played into what suddenly became available for this sale:

In 2021, we purchased a building in Aurora, Colorado, to improve our shipping and warehousing infrastructure while saving money shipping packages to the West Coast. We staffed it with a fantastic group of passionate and talented warehouse members, which allowed us to continue expanding our operations and product offerings while keeping ship times low and customer satisfaction high. For reasons addressed below, we have decided to close our Colorado warehouse, and last month, our dedicated crew shipped their final package. Our entire organization is incredibly grateful for what they've built over the years, and we are thrilled that a few of them will continue with us in our next major step in continued growth!

We are beyond excited to announce the purchase of a 120,000-square-foot building in Meriden, Connecticut, that will serve as the new Vinegar Syndrome HQ. With approximately 70,000 square feet of space dedicated to warehousing and shipping, we are increasing our current warehousing footprint by a factor of 5. This will mean a single shipping location for all domestic and international orders, cutting down on processing and handling times and decreasing shipping bottlenecks during our more significant sales events.

This additional space is also imperative for our growing business, including our consistently expanding network of Partner Labels with OCN Distribution and the increased output of Mélusine. Simply put, Vinegar Syndrome has outgrown our existing two warehouses, and this move allows for more discs, more merch printed in-house via VS Press, and an upcoming relaunch of our publishing division, which we are eager to share more about in the coming months. The new building will also be home to our offices, restoration suites, and, of course, our ever-expanding archive of motion picture film, which will be housed in a subterranean film vault that is currently under construction - more info on this to come!

We plan to begin shipping orders out of this new location in early 2025 and will share updates as we proceed.

For customers of our retail store, The Archive in Aurora, we will continue normal operations at the 1431 Dayton Street location through September. We will have some additional news to share shortly about our future retail location in Denver! Regarding our Bridgeport location of The Archive, this location will remain open for the foreseeable future, but stay tuned for exciting updates in 2025!!

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread

Brian T Carryover from the Eureka thread...

On sale later today via Kani...

Our edition of Patrick Tam’s MY HEART IS THAT ETERNAL ROSE is finally here
The idyllic, beach-side life of a retired Triad boss, his daughter Lap (Joey Wang) and her boyfriend Rick (Kenny Bee), shatters when a mob favour turns into a bloody shootout. Trading her freedom for her father’s, Lap becomes mistress to Godfather Shen, while Rick goes into exile. Years later, as Shen unknowingly hires Rick as a hitman, Lap sees her chance at escape, while doe-eyed Triad gofer (Tony Leung) completes the doomed quadrangle.

Directed by the foremost stylist of the Hong Kong New Wave (and a mentor to Wong Kar-Wai), MY HEART IS THAT ETERNAL ROSE is the apotheosis of Patrick Tam’s time within the strictures of the Hong Kong mainstream. Fulfilling commercial requirements while elevating formula with a lush sense of style, the film sings with the painterly cinematography of Christopher Doyle and David Chung as Tam’s dream-like direction bridges the distance between the bullet ballets of a John Woo and the festering darkness of a David Lynch. It is the blue jewel in the crown of the Hong Kong heroic bloodshed sub-genre, shining bright to this day.
Bonus Features:
2K Restoration
New Cantonese Audio Restoration (2024)
Mandarin Dub
Interview with John Sham by Arnaud Lanuque
C.I.D. Season 1, Episode 3: "Two Teddy Girls"

Interview with actor Simon Yam on C.I.D.
Booklet with new interview with Patrick Tam
New artwork by Tom Estrera III
New Limited Edition Slipcover by Kong Kee 江記

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread

Saw that announcement earlier. Great news. Also nice that they thought to include old TV episodes as supplements. A lot of Hong Kong directors (and stars, of course) started out on television there, and some of those 70’s and 80’s shows are as highly regarded as movies of the era.

I’m also jazzed that the new HK title is AN EYE FOR AN EYE (1990). That’s the kind of thing we need more of, at least as far as HK movies go; stuff that isn’t Golden Harvest or Shaw. In the early days of YouTube, and back when I thought so many movies like this would never get upgraded (and to be honest, it took long enough), I uploaded a few scenes from my VCD, including the kick-ass ending. The latter got a few hundred thousand views for years until a few days before the Hong Kong Blu-Ray and DVD finally came available, when it was promptly taken down. They left up the other clips, thankfully, which consisted both parts of the crazy restaurant fight in the movie, and two parts of sequence with loner hero Max Mok singing Kareoke to a big Mandarin hit song by Dave Wong Jie as scenes we just witnessed replay in montage. This is one of those Hong Kong movies where the emotions are pitched to the cheap seats, big time, which wasn’t uncommon in that era. The sleazeball villain is played by Jimmy Lung Fong, an actor who played virtually nothing but such roles and really only needed a moustache to twirl while soiling the reputation of mousy leading lady Joey Wong.

Naturally, I finally picked up the Hong Kong Blu-ray about three months ago for a decent price, so that’s why this VS edition exists, I’m sure.

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread

I’m sure some folks must tire of the HK announcements, but I’m thankful. Maybe a little broke because of them too.

Based on that ‘kids are not alright’ bit, the long sought after uncut/uncensored version of Ringo Lam’s SCHOOL ON FIRE would sure be nice, although I don’t pay much attention to the rumor mill so that’s probably still wishful thinking.

Apparently the house in the picture matches the one from Dial D for Demons.

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread

Weird choice. It’s ok but I don’t recall it having much of a following (I know, personal opinion, etc etc), and it got pretty average to low scores even when it was new. It’s basically THE RING with pagers instead of videocassettes, and a Category II film (unless they’ve sourced a previously unknown Cat. III version which seems unlikely). Their choices baffle me sometimes.

Personally I have a soft (read: weak ) spot for – and a fairly massive collection of – low- to no-budget Hong Kong movies from circa 1998 to 2004, when the industry was atrophying rapidly and companies top to bottom were cranking out cheap quickies and knock-offs that basically kept a lot of regulars gainfully (if not profitably) employed through those years. Lots of very limited theatrical runs locally (like this one, which was a Golden Harvest production and thus positioned a little higher up the food chain) and even more direct-to-video stuff. It was really the last wheeze of a very prolific industry, but by then the top talents were already splitting time between HK and Hollywood and many western fans just weren’t interested in these items from the lower depths, so to speak, which meant all sorts of Chinatown hunts and unique (if forgettable) finds for me!

It’s really the kind of film that would make more sense in a boxed set of similar fare just to lower the per-film price a bit for those less familiar with it. VS released that MADE IN HONG KONG VOL. 1 box which similarly contained movies from this period, so I’m a little surprised DIAL D wasn’t rolled into a VOL. 2.

All the HK stuff is actually saving me a ton of money. I almost subscribed last year, but it’s just not my wheelhouse.

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread

I’ve heard other folks saying that elsewhere, and it’s totally understandable in light of some titles they’ve picked up (thankfully not most). I do think they could be more choosy with what they licence, though, or push harder for ‘important’ key titles that people have actually wanted for ages (like the wild SCHOOL ON FIRE) and which might be more enticing to those who are less familiar with the city’s cinema. Stuff like DIAL D FOR DEMONS, if that turns out to be the big reveal, are not representative of the best Hong Kong had to offer. I do wonder if every key title they make a deal for comes with caveats in the form of stuff like this.

For what little it’s worth, this HK title wouldn’t have been included as part of a subscription since it’s VSA rather than part of the main line. I haven’t tallied things up, but their Hong Kong releases have been something like 70% VS / 30% VSA?

I hope one of the movies in October is as Christmas movie. They usually have to release them in October to get the movie in consumers hands before the end of the year.

I ordered The Tenant, Corpse Mania, Forgotten Gialli vol. 7, and Power of Grayskull (which I think is the one that has a bunch of my friends in it).

^Thanks for the heads up on Power of Grayskull. I ordered a copy! The slipcover version of this will likely go quick.

I still want the Hey It's Intermission Time Bluray but this new release from AGFA might also be a worthy purchase.

Added The Tenant to my Kanopy watchlist. If it’s up my alley, I’ll spring for the 4K disc, but otherwise I’ll just skip it.

Looks like this one’s going to be another faux ‘sold out’ title, with the slip version gone and the regular down to less than 100 copies, which will then be magically replenished. On the plus side, they included the uncut versions of all the trailers, which I don’t believe they did on the first volume (which is still available and lasted long enough to be included in sales, hint hint).

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread

I'll be curious to see what comes up with this Syntober event! I was tempted to order Ebola Syndrome, but my Labor Day sale orders are still unfulfilled, which makes me a bit not want to order anything else..
I also wonder is Syntobor is a shipping stacking promotion?

Hmm, maybe I posted this to the wrong thread and should have put this in a Bluray Bargains forum?

I tested this with EBOLA SYNDROME (which I already own and which, more importantly, was quite a bit cheaper for me in a previous sale) when it was first listed and I didn’t get the stacking option, and my Labor Day items likewise haven’t shipped. I was able to add two items in mid-September, but the window is closed to me now.

Today’s title, FLESH AND FANTASY, was about the same in the Black Friday 2023 sale I bought it from, but it did include the slip.
