Great to see JSA on that list; that's a key picture from near the beginning of the Korean cinema renaissance, and probably the first to couch the political/military aspects of the North/South situation inside glossy Hollywood action-thriller production values. That, plus the fact that Criterion recently pimped it as part of their 'New Korean Retrospective' on their channel, gives me hope that other K-films from the 1999-2001 era – SHIRI, ATTACK THE GAS STATION, TELL ME SOMETHING, MEMENTO MORI (and it's related films), RING VIRUS, NOWHERE TO HIDE, SAVE THE GREEN PLANET and countless others – might be ripe for rediscovery on nicely-appointed Blu-rays, and the world can finally set OLD BOY aside for a few years.

what a fun movie. I was so in the mood for this and it didn’t disappoint. The transfer was stellar and the 5.1 was boisterous. Very clear voices and great sound effects. Bluray.com made a big deal of the inclusion of the 4.1 track. Why would that be a big deal when it had the original mono and 5.1? One less speaker doesn’t seem like it should be a big deal, but to me the 5.1 sounded best. Really impressed by transfer. Catherine Mary Stewart still looks good, but weird that her interview, while recent was in b/w. That was odd. The 30+ minute doc was rough and def not HD, but interesting and they seemed to think that the CGI was groundbreaking for the time. I dunno. Was it? I mean it looked like archaic Apple IIe graphics, perhaps better, but I’m sure not revolutionary like the makers made out to be, but nice vintage making of nonetheless.

This is just a fun movie, saw it in theaters and enjoyed just as much now. Even got chills when everyone came to see Alex break the record. Really good presentation all around.

I never see new releases immediately, but just felt like a fun romp and this certainly was.

Highly recommended for fans of fun, 80’s nostalgic, space adventures. Arrow did this up right.

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

The 4.1 track is the original surround track from the 70mm theatrical release. It's never been released on home video before. The 5.1 is a modern mix. I've never heard the 4.1 before, so I can't say if it's better or worse or what the difference are, but it's the original mix and that's why it's important. Without listening I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's better. But if the 5.1 is more boisterous, then it's possible I'm wrong.

The Last Starfighter was not the first movie to incorporate computer graphics (Westworld was, in 1973), but it used them more extensively than any movie before had. It was also the first to use "integrated CGI," meaning that the CGI depicted real physical objects (the spaceships) within the reality of the movie rather than graphics on a screen (like Star Trek II) or virtual objects inside a VR setting (like Tron).

So, yes, it was quite groundbreaking for its day, even if we don't consider the CGI to be photorealistic anymore.

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I just watched The Last Starfighter. Pleasant film, -it's funny that traditional model-work would have held up better than the CGI they used. There's a featurette that explains TLS's place in the History of computer graphics on Film. Also, two of the extras use the style mentioned, -using black-and-white for the Talent interviewed shown on a split-screen with color clips from the film. There are several extras on the disc, -about an hour, -covering various aspects of the film and three commentary tracks. There's also retrospectives of TLS from two different releases of the film on Home Video; so you get to watch The Talent age pretty mercilessly.

Amazon has matched many of the prices, and even having coupons on some of them also that bring them even lower.

^ Has nothing to do with Arrow. Amazon is finally cracking down on international shipments by either jacking up the shipping price or blocking some titles from shipping at all. I suggest reading through the recent comments in the International Blu-ray deals thread for some tips.

I’ll probably get that Demons set. Had both on DVD. Didn’t see 2, but I know 1 was wacky and good at the same time. Vague recollection.

Looks like I really fucked myself by not getting Tremors right away. I preordered at Amazon late and now it’s sold out/back ordered everywhere. My amazon estimate is February.

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Finally released outside Japan for the very first time, these unique riffs on H.G. Wells' classic character (though undoubtedly also indebted to Universal's iconic film series) are two of the earliest examples of tokusatsu (special effects) cinema from the legendary Daiei Studios. In The Invisible Man Appears, written and directed by Nobuo Adachi in 1949, a scientist successfully creates an invisibility serum, only to be kidnapped by a gang of thugs who wish to use the formula to rob a priceless jewel. In addition to being the earliest surviving Japanese science fiction film ever made, the film's entertaining special effects were an early credit for the legendary Eiji Tsuburaya, five years before he first brought Godzilla to life. Eight years later, Mitsuo Murayama's exciting The Invisible Man vs. The Human Fly tells the story of a series of mysterious murders where the only clue is strange buzzing noise at the scene of the crime... could this be linked to secret wartime experiments in shrinking humans to the size of insects? And can a scientist who's just invented an invisibility ray be the one to stop it?
Bonus Materials
  • High Definition (1080p) transfers of both films on one Blu-ray disc
  • Original lossless Japanese mono audio on both films
  • Optional English subtitles for both films
  • Transparent Terrors, a newly filmed interview with critic and genre scholar Kim Newman on the history of the 'Invisible Man' in cinema
  • Theatrical trailer for The Invisible Man Appears
  • Image galleries for both films
  • Reversible sleeve featuring new and original artwork by Graham Humphreys
  • FIRST PRESSING ONLY: Illustrated collectors' booklet featuring new writing by Keith Allison, Hayley Scanlon and Tom Vincent

Hard to say. It’s possible they really underestimated the demand for this release. I don’t know if Arrow has ever repressed their limited editions.

It's not a great answer, -and certainly not definitive, but "maybe"... it happened for me with the "Django" Limited blu-ray (which some people are saying wasn't supposed to be released at all). With Gamera, it was lucky that Amazon UK had them in stock while Amazon US was saying my pre-order might not arrive for two months. I ordered "He Came From The Swamp" (which is not limited) and Amazon kept pushing the arrival date further down the road. I found that Walmart had it in stock at the same price and placed an order. Hours later Amazon changed the arrival date to next week.
