That’s a shame… especially since you’re such a fan of this stuff. All the best releases are coming from the UK.

Oh, trust me I know dex14. The releases by Eureka and 88 Films of the HK films for the past few years have been outstanding. The one and only import that I got was the Eureka release of Drunken Master since that was a Region Free. After that, they locked it to B only.

Official announcement:

SURPRISE UK/US/CA TITLE: Shawscope Volume one (Limited Edition Blu-ray Boxset)

After an undisputed reign at the peak of Hong Kong’s film industry in the 1960s, Shaw Brothers (the studio founded by real-life brothers Run Run and Runme Shaw) found their dominance challenged by up-and-coming rivals in the early 1970s. They swiftly responded by producing hundreds of the most iconic action films ever made, revolutionising the genre through the backbreaking work of top-shelf talent on both sides of the camera as well as unbeatable widescreen production value, much of it shot at ‘Movietown’, their huge, privately-owned studio on the outskirts of Hong Kong.

Looking at it, it seems to be a similar packaging like the Zatoichi set. I'm okay with that. I haven't been buying physical media at all. This is just going to be my second purchase this year and I don't want to wait for their standard release if they decide to go that route.

I'm not necessarily a fan of big boxes either, but a) no way I'm waiting, and b) I kind of enjoy the gimmick of the box being "Shaw Scope" shaped/sized.

I'm so fired up for this box even though I already own 3 of the titles on blu. Of course the price I paid for importing those 3 almost equals the cost of this entire box.

I can't wait to see what's in store for volume 2. Based on the contents of this set (almost all heavy hitters and all traditional kung fu), I wonder if the second box will follow suit or if it will go a different direction. We know they have 36th Chamber, but I wonder if that would be a separate release. Trilogy set maybe? What I really want would be some early 70's Chang Cheh like The Duel, Vengeance or Blood Brothers and some Chor Yuen Gu Long adaptations like Magic Blade, Clans of Intrigue or Jade Tiger.

It has been confirmed that Arrow doesn't have Super Inframan unfortunately yet.

Over in the Criterion thread I'm talking about how I stopped blind buying their titles but now I'm looking at that trailer and I want to blind buy this big box.

I rarely buy physical media anymore or ask for it as a gift (last big physical media gift I received was the Gamera Arrow set that I was gifted by my parents after I got lucky and was able to have my dad pre-order at Amazon when the set was less than $150, still thrilled I now own this currently crazy expensive set), but I might ask for this set as a gift. Pretty neat collection of Shaw Brothers films.

I still have a few boxes of the old Celestial Pictures region 3 DVDs and VCDs that I picked up on multiple trips to Hong Kong. I am interested in this box set with the newly remastered movies.

I've been ruminating on this a lot. Say what you will about the movie's dubious merits, it's inarguably Scott's most gorgeous film. Would have loved to see it in 4k.

DiabolikDVD is my go-to for Arrow pre-orders. I like that they charge upfront so I don't get a $100 hit to my bank account six months in the future. Their packaging is excellent, I never have to worry about damaged items arriving from them.

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

The Shaw box is only tempting to me because of the potential supplements (and to a lesser degree the new English subs), although I'm hopeful they've might have secured some input from Asian Hong Kong cinema scholars (i.e. scholars who are actually Asian or Chinese) and not just the army of gwailos that appear to be name-checked in the press release. The price-per-movie isn't too shabby, but as the owner of around 500 of the Celestial DVDs and VCDs (most of which still look phenomenal, btw) as well as the 668-Shaw film Ziieagle Movie Box released in 2010 (subject to bizarro Singaporean censorship laws, sadly, but containing a lot of Shaw films that never saw physical media releases of any kind, and never will), I may need to consider cherry picking some of the truer "classics" from this set if they become available as singles down the road. I'd give anything for Arrow to surprise us in the other three sets by including even a few of the many NON-martial arts and kung-fu films the studio cranked out in nearly the same numbers – the musicals, comedies, horror films, social dramas, spy capers – but I seriously doubt western distributors have ever looked beyond the martial arts titles since those have always 'played' well internationally. Still, it'll be interesting to see the full list of extras.

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I would love to have a physical copy of Love Eterne or The Enchanting Shadow but for the Western market, it will be Martial Arts/Wuxia releases for the most part. It’s what sells here. There’s a good chance that we may get some Horror ones but I think 88 Films might have some of the titles so if we can get something like Bloody Parrot or Seeding of a Ghost, I will be happy. It has been confirmed that they don’t have Super Inframan so that’s out.

I have been searching for their non Wuxia/Martial arts films and has been a struggle finding it that are English friendly. Thankfully I have acquired some reliable sources to obtain those films.

I know you've stated above that you're not region-free, but this would be a scenario where it would certainly come in handy (assuming your interested in non-MA Shaw titles is sizeable). I'm sure the 50 titles coming in these Arrow boxes are all top tier, but that's 50 out of, what, a thousand or more? And a good number of them have been released previously in the west (DD, Wellgo, Image, etc), but clearly Arrow's aiming for definitive, final versions with these editions, A player can be had so cheaply, though, and some of those DVDs aren't much higher than original retail when they turn up online. Mind you, more popular titles (not in the west per se, but still) like LOVE ETERNE and ENCHANTING SHADOW are indeed pretty easy to obtain from 'reliable sources', especially if you're in the GTA area as I recall (wink-wink, nudge-nudge). :)

Definitely seems like 88 Films has been thinking outside the, ahem, box with their Shaw titles so far, which have included some horror titles at least, not to mention the amusing HUMAN GODDESS. Their lack of supplements on those releases was always a little disappointing, though, which made most of them not worth upgrading from the Celestial DVDs.

I'll grab Deep Red (after looking further, I prefer the regular art to the Arte Originale). I'm interested in Yokai Monsters but might wait for a standard edition down the road.

Is it like kaiju films?

I got my Zavvi steelbook Saturday, -ten days after it shipped. It came in a box that was not taped. No paper filler. It was in good condition, though -no damage. I wonder if it was sent exactly that way, or it ended up like that after it went through Customs.
