Re: The Official Arrow Blu-ray Thread
Amazon has now matched Target and lowered their Stray Cat Rock pre-order down to $44. Jump on it at this price since this limited edition set will sell out.
I will also mention that Society's transfer looks incredible. Arrow Video has outdone themselves with this restoration.

So is Society any good? I was always intrigued by the VHS cover as a teenager but I don't think I ever got around to seeing it.

Any good nudity? Funny/bad dialogue? Reading a little bit about it, everyone seems to think highly of the gore.

Does a love scene featuring Playboy playmate Devin DeVasquez sound good to you? It's not one of those cheesy so-bad-it's-good movies, Society is charming on its accord.
I'd post it but the review hasn't gone live.

Haha. Now you are talking my language. Amazon has it for Pre-order for $25. I went ahead with a blind buy. I watched the trailer on Youtube and it looks right up my alley. Plus I like the cool packaging and the idea of a sequel comic.

Society features bad acting and a pretty slow, frustrating first two acts. However the third act has a lot of payoff. The ending was great, but even as a Brian Yuzna fan I struggled to get there. If you're a fan of 80s horror movies there's a good chance you'll like it, but Arrow releases are similar to Criterion in pricing, so I wouldn't recommend a blind buy.

That's my problem, I'm a big fan of the Re-Animator movies and this movie sounds like it's up my alley, but it's a bit much to blind buy. Not like I can try it out anywhere either though. I guess I'll just wait and see if it ever gets to like $15.

On the subject of Re-Animator, what the story with the BD of that? Is there definitive version, or are there upscales, different cuts, and the usual stuff that happens with cult movies on disc?

Re: The Official Arrow Blu-ray Thread
I could have dealt with the pacing if the lead didn't bother me so much. I'm not sure if it was the acting, writing, or a combination of both, but I found him extremely difficult to sympathize with, and I don't think that was intentional.

I figured, for $25, if I hate the movie, I should be able to recoup most of my money back once the LE sells out (and being limited to 3000 copies, I figure it eventually will).

You people are nuts, Society is awesomely weird. The cast is perfect. People looking for an all-out creaturefest may want to look elsewhere, since that payoff isn't until the very end of the movie.

I'm more about of a Samurai/Akira Kurosawa guy when it comes to Japanese films, but I do love Battle Royale and I consider it an borderline exploitation. Hmmm, guess I'll try to watch one of these films soon to see if it's my cup of tea.

The lead is Billy Warlock, star of the early seasons of Baywatch, where he was out-acted by such renowned thespians as David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson. That should tell you all you need to know.

Re: The Official Arrow Blu-ray Thread
The best release so far is considered the German Capelight one. They had a deluxe release containing the Theatrical and Intergral versions that I think might be sold out or fetching high after market prices.
The UK Second Sight release is very similar to the German release, containing the two cuts and most of the same extras I believe from the big DVD releases in the US from way back. I have this one and it is a huge step up from the US Image release.
Unfortunately both the German and UK discs are Region B locked.
You can see the differences between the US and Second Sight (along with the Capelight and DVDs) here

In any case, I had this pre-ordered at the full price with the intention of cancelling it if it didn't drop before release date. Was still on the fence at $50, but I think this last drop has convinced me to try to give it a shot.

I watched some trailers on Stray Cat Rock on youtube and I was glad I did. It definitely isn't for me.
That one looks like a tough one to blind buy for if you have no idea what you are getting. The set looks nice though.

The Stray Cat Rock films are nothing like Battle Royale, which is much more influenced by modern anime.

Island of Death is a pure '70s sexploitation flick. Apparently the director saw Texas Chainsaw Massacre in his native Greece and decided to make a shocking movie in response.
